What is Anime?

Armitage's Box Anime is another name for what some people call Japanamation. Anime is really diffrent from American cartoons. Anime is some of the best animated "cartoons" or movies that you will ever see! I use the word cartoon lightly because Anime is nothing like our (sometimes) "boring" saturday morning kiddy shows and should not be compaired with cartoons at all because, Anime is superior in every way. I am not tring to upset anyone that might really like american cartoons because I watch SOME of them to. Anime has been aired on American television, although very rarely, I know that Starblazers (very good), Robotech (very good), Speed Racer, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon have all been aired here from the late 70's to TV now (I believe that these are in order by years). I am told some of them have been cut to be "VIEWABLE" on our TV's (Dragon Ball Z in particular). It is just that they are a lot more detailed than our cartoons, and some of them are a lot more graphic. Sometimes they can get way too graphic (If you catch my drift, these generally are not the Anime you want to watch, unless you are into that sort of thing). Most Anime should not be viewed by small children because they are mostly made for adult audiences and are subject to violent/sexual content, bad language, and/or adult themes. Not all Anime is like is like that though. If you asked me for an estimate I would say around half have at least one of these topics in them. Some Anime has a lot of sexual content and some Anime doesn't have any sexual content at all, but most have it in a very minor way, and that is the same for violent content, bad language, and adult themes. One could see how this ranges, but I would not get caught up with this, just sit down and enjoy.

Why doesn't the U.S. have more Anime on television?

Dragon Ball Z

Why doesn't the U.S. have more Anime on television? That is the question myself and all Anime fans want to know. Ya, I know that we have had some Anime on TV years ago like Starblazers, Robotech, Speed Racer. Now we have Dragon Ball Z, Ronin Warriors and Sailor Moon, even Robotech and Speed Racer are back on TV, but from what I understand Dragon Ball Z, Ronin Warriors and maybe others are censored so they can be shown on American TV for children. The only Anime they bring here is for morning "Cartoons," it would be nice if the TV stations would put Anime on TV the way it is meant to be seen. Sure it would be on late, if not on cable, but it is for audiences that are mature enough to handle it. The first time I ever saw Vampire Hunter D was on 1:00 in the morning, ya it was still cut, but you can't get around that on network TV, due to the fact that some have a lot of violence and nudity. Most titles have minor elements of violence and nudity, but since the Japanese are a lot more tolerant of if, Americans don't get to see Anime on TV. So this is the major reason for the censorship, but in titles such as Vampire Hunter D its minimal. I have also found Anime on other channels and I know that the Sci-Fi channel plays Anime from time to time, but it needs to be seen a lot more. I believe that if Anime starts playing at the movies this may one day change the feelings of people and it will get on TV eventually. I hope that the new "Heavy Metal" movie, which is coming to American theaters around summer of 98, may turn people to realize the adult aspect of Animation. If something like "Heavy Metal" or if someone re-releases "Armitage The Third," or "Akira" so that the mainstream can see what the Anime fans enjoy so much we will get our wish.

What about store ratings?

Evangelion Box 3 This brings up a downside of Anime, Many rental stores like Blockbuster and others (not to put them down because that is where I rent/buy my Anime) put a NC-17 sticker or something to that effect on most Anime titles. A lot of the time they are not deserving of this label. I can see where the rental stores are coming from because of the obscene language, the violence, and the (usually) mild nudity contained within the Anime, but the content is not unlike that of a PG-13 movie. PG-13 would be a much more deserving rating for most of the Anime that are in the stores, mabee the stickers should be placed under conditions more like this. Well since most Anime are not released on the big screen, they do not need to be given a rating for a direct video release! So stores like blockbuster which rents them slap the rating on them all because of the reputation ANIME has to be voilent and have nudity. So they dont watch them for content. Some do deserve this, some deserve X rating (Overfiend, bacially A japeneese pornfest), these usually have a rating on them anyway "ABSOlUTALLY NOT FOR CHILDREN."There are ones for all ages, is it fair, NO, but when you concider that a young child may want his parents to rent him something that is bacically an R movie, you can see why they are doing this!

Where Can Buy and Rent Anime?

Iria Even now finding Anime is getting easier. It used to be you could only go to say Suncoast video to find Anime but now that is changing. More and more stores are coming to realize that Anime sells, making them money. So stores like Software ETC(Babbages), Electronics Boutique, Best Buy, Comic Shops and others are getting Anime. From all these I would recommend going to Electronics Boutique because they are 5$ to 7$ cheaper then all the rest and they have a rather good selection. Best Buy also has rather cheap prices but not a great selection.

You will usually fine Anime between $19.00 - $39.00 at most places and at Electronics Boutique and Best Buy can have them as low as $10.00. I would advise you to rent FIRST, then if you like it, buy it. I have also recently learned that Electronic Boutique also carries Anime on Sirus CD, for your PC ($15.00), they run smooth and look pretty good. If you have a computer and the Anime you want is cheaper on the PC you may want to go that way.

If you do not have the money to buy a lot of Anime go the way of rentals. I would recommend that you go to the larger chains because the smaller ones usually do not have a good selection if at all. I would try Blockbuster or Choices(West Coast Video), if you have multiple stores in the area try them all, they will ALL have a different selection.
