Ghost In The Shell is based on a magna series of 22 books, which are set in the distant future. Humanity now uses technology extensivly to the point where artifical intellegence does most of the work of every day life. The global computer metwork keeps the peace so that national boarders are on longer needed, and is only really challenged by hackers(who can be very disruptive). They have the ability to alter a person's "ghost," creating memories that are not the persons real thoughts and feelings.
Oficer Motoko Kusanagi works for the Section 9 security force and is an elite cybernetic officer. She has so many implants that she can not consider herself human anymore. See wears a skin that can render her invisible, hiding her from the enemy. She is assigned to find who or what is behind a recent string of computer hacking jobs, eventually finding that these jobs were done by people that had their "ghost" hacked into, being controlled by the "Puppet Master." She was then assigned to find the "Puppet Master" after he hacked into a translator to a high government official, and the story goes on from there.

ghost in the shell

The animation quality of "Ghost In The Shell" is some of the best I have seen. The way that they mixed hand drawn animation and computer graphics so flawlessly has to be seen to believe. The sound is as good as the animation and the effects are clear, which just add so much to the film. The soundtrack is also done very well, a lot of it being ambient sound that just makes you get the chills. The dubbing on this film was good, and the voice actors were chosen well, but they sound very dull and machine-like.
Although Ghost In The Shell has its strong points it falls apart plotwise. Not unlike Akira, the complexity of the plot is much too confusing for the length of this movie. You really have to watch this a few times just to understand a lot of what is going on in the plot. It's everything else that keeps this movie alive throughout the whole experience. This is an overall good movie and I would recomend that you see it, but be wide awake or you might miss something.
