SYNOPSIS

Through pictures and commentaries, these documentaries traced the history of the United States from the last of the Mohicans to the hippies of the 1960's; they were filmed on location over a period of two years.

Alistair Cooke, who had spent the last 35 years living in the U.S. as a foreign correspondent and reporter narrated the series which he regarded as a "personal history of America."

America was one of the very few shows to ever be shown first on commercial TV and later rerun on public television - The Public Broadcasting Service Network.
