The Earth of
2319 was radically different from that of the 20th Century. There had been a
nuclear holocaust that had devastated much of the planet. The remnants of
civilization were living in isolated cities, each with its own lifestyle,
separated from each other by vast stretches of wasteland and ruins. One of the
surviving communities was the City of Domes, where all residents lived entirely
for their own pleasure. It would have been idyllic were it not mandated that
nobody could live past their 30th birthday.
Logan was one
of the city's citizens, a Sandman (elite policeman) who had fled as his 30th
birthday approached. Together with a young girl named Jessica, who had helped
him escape from the city, and an android (humanlike robot) named Rem, Logan
searched for a purported utopia called Sanctuary. Pursuing them was a dedicated
Sandman (Francis) who wanted to take them back to the City of Domes to die in
the ritual ceremony known as Carousel.
The chase of
the fugitives by their pursuer, and their encounters with the diverse and
strange remnants of human civilization, both in modern cities and in the wilds
between them, provided the subject matter for this series.
It was based
on a novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson and a feature-length
movie, both also titled Logan’s Run.
