SYNOPSIS

Schoolroom drama about Pete Dixon, a black history teacher in an integrated big-city high school. An idealist, Pete instilled lessons in tolerance and understanding to his Walt Whitman High School students. The number of his home room was 222, and wherever he went he was surrounded by a group of kids. They loved him for his easygoing manner and willingness to side with them when he knew they weren't being treated fairly by the system.

Cast members included: Seymour Kaufman, the slightly sarcastic principal; Liz McIntyre, Pete's girlfriend and a school counselor and Alice Johnson, an exuberant student teacher who was promoted to full-fledged English teacher in the second season. The rest of the regulars were all students.

The program was highly regarded for handling current problems relevant to today's youth - subjects like prejudice, dropping out of school, drugs, etc... It also received many awards and commendations from educational and civil rights groups. Its sense of reality was heightened by the fact that it was based on, and partially filmed at, Los Angeles High School which housed over 3,000 students.
