SYNOPSIS
The great success of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys brought this spin-off series that ultimately proved more popular than the original!
Filmed entirely in New Zealand, Xena - sexy, tall, muscular and dressed in leather - was an evil warrior Princess who battled Hercules, but in her last appearance on Hercules: TLJ, she vowed to change her ways by traveling from place-to-place helping those in trouble. Aiding her in her journeys are her trusty sword and chakram (a razor-sharp, discus-like weapon which is hurled into the air at her enemies with remarkable speed). She also has the ability to do unbelievable, acrobatic flips, karate-type blows and the "Xena touch," a two-fingered pinch on the neck that will allow her to get information from an uncooperative foe.
Traveling with her are: Gabrielle, who totally resembles a modern day Valley girl and Joxer, their well-meaning but clumsy friend who shows up frequently to "help." Argo is Xena's horse.
One recurring villainess is Callisto, who was sent to Hades after being defeated by Xena. She returns in various forms to give her trouble. Seen occasionally as they were on Hercules: TLJ, are Autolycus, the conniving Prince of Thieves and Ares, the God of War. There are also plenty of monsters and renegade Gods, rendered with imaginative and spectacular special effects.
During the 1997-98 season, Gabrielle's evil daughter Hope, born of her Mother's unwilling union with the sinister God Dahak, murdered Xena's son and was apparently poisoned. At the end of the season, she returned, emerging from a cocoon and looking exactly like Gabrielle. She was ordered to serve Dahak and prepare for his New World Order, in which all goodness would be eliminated. In the battle that ensued, Gabrielle sacrificed herself by leaping into a bottomless pit in order to save Xena and Callisto, ally of Hope and Ares, was stabbed to death by Xena.
That fall, Xena was searching for Gabrielle, whose spirit had been cast into a mythological Purgatory. They were reunited after Xena managed to get Hope's dying monster child to kill Hope by mistake, freeing Gabrielle.
