You're all set to say 'No,' 'Hell, no!,' in fact, but you find yourself agreeing. Somehow, this -is- your destiny you realize.
Liam and the others smile at you and then one of the woman grabs your hand and leads you further into the back.
You look around in confusion, but suddenly you feel your arm being grasped roughly again, your sleeve is jerked up and a sharp fire seems to flash across your skin. Looking down you see that they have pressed something into the underside of your lower arm. Half-way between a scar and a tattoo, the strange symbol burned into your arm doesn't really hurt anymore, it just sort of tingles.
Rubbing it absently, you listen with only half an ear as things are explained to you. Next thing you know, you're being handed a bag and shoved back out the door, 'to prove yourself.'
You've been given the use of Liam's car, and though you're not used to driving this type of car, or around Toronto at night, you soon arrive back at the Raven. You hop out of the car and adjust the small pack slung across your back, every nerve in your body is tingling with fear and anticipation. As you walk towards the alleyway next to the club and glance up, full moon. The moon's cold light is somehow comforting and terrifying all at once. You've never felt as alive as you do at this moment, no longer the hunted, you are the hunter.
Your heart is beating a mile a minute. Your palms are sweating and your stomach is all tied in knots. But still, it feels right. 'I'm insane,' you think, but keep walking towards the alley none-the-less.
Every fiber of your being is on alert. Suddenly you hear moaning coming from behind a dumpster. Rushing forward you see a vampire leaning over the now limp body of someone who looks an awful lot like you.
Your eyes widen and you take another cautious step forward. Suddenly, even though you didn't think you made any noise, the vampire turns and snarls at you.
You always thought you'd freeze in at a moment like this, but with that strange mark pulsating on your arm, you find yourself reacting instead.
You neatly side-step the blood sucker and as he passes, you help his momentum with a hand on the back and push him into the brick wall.
Since he's momentarily stunned, you have plenty of time to pull stake from your backpack. You glance down at the club goer on the ground and are once again stunned at how much the poor victim had looks like you. Only dead. That could have been you… if it hadn't been for Liam it -would've- been you. "Us against them," You mumble, knowing that killing this vampire wouldn't bring the club goer back, but it would save the people that would've been his future meals.
The vampire turns back to you and makes a grab for you. You let him. As he twists you around so your back is to him, you shove the stake under your left arm and right into his heart.
He falls instantly to the ground, dead. He was obviously a lot younger than the one who'd been after you before.
Looking down, you feel a small twinge of pity and even a smaller bit of regret. But then you look back at the club goer and your resolve returns. The young dancer hadn't deserved to die this night, the vampire had.
You drag the corpse deeper into the alley, where the morning sun would still reach it but where passer-bys would be less likely to see it, just like Liam had told you.
With a sigh you head back towards the car to head back to the bookstore.
Well, who'd known that a night at the Raven would change your whole life? From innocent club hopper, just out for some cool drinks, to vampire hunter in one night. Fate is a funny thing.
