Coming Up Next: Topher Grace

For some, getting that big break in showbiz is the culmination of years of starvation and dues paying. "Journalists ask me, 'Does this fulfill your lifelong dream?'" say Topher Grace, the star of That '70s Show, "and I'm like, '....No.'" The Connecticut native (and former intern of ABC exec Jamie Tarses) was a freshman at USC when '70s Show producers Bonnie and Terry Turner called - they remembered him from a prep-school play he did with their daughter. "I'd never auditioned before," he says, "and all the kids there were famous! I was the loser sitting in the corner." Still, the Everykid befuddlement that Grace brings to his character, Eric Forman, has struck a chord: Critics have compared his acting to that of icons like his hero, Bob Newhart, and even Dustin Hoffman ("He's amazing, too"). For Grace, 21, it's all about sticking to what you know. "Eric's pretty nervous, and I'm pretty nervous," he says. "I hope audiences sympathize with someone who's not totally a winner; they might respect you not being...cool."
