Fast Forward In Time - Chapter 4

Tuesday April 24th, 2007
Madrid

"Liz, are you sure you're okay? You look a little pale." Angela asked her as they exited their flight and made their way to the baggage claim. Ever since they had started their landing to Madrids' airport she had become quiet and distant.

Elizabeth had begun to feel a strange sensation in the pit of her stomach. She couldn't understand it, but she had this feeling that something important was going to happen. "I'm just a little jet lagged that's all. I'm sure I'll feel better after we're settled into our hotel and I've had some sleep," was all she said.

Angela wasn't convinced, but she didn't want to push. "If you say so." When Nicolas had gone a little further ahead to grab their bags she whispered in her ear, "If you want to share a room while we're here, you know two double beds, that would be fine with us." Elizabeth looked at her like she was crazy. Angela raised her hand to stop her from yelling at her. "Before you go on about how you will be fine and that you don't need us to worry about you, I just want you to know that I am only offering because I think it is safer for you to be staying in a room with us in a strange city. Besides, it'll be fun."

Elizabeth knew that was a lie. "You know that isn't why!" she said hurt. "I am not a child that needs to be babysat. You know I have been traveling on my own to different places for a while now and I am always careful. I wish everyone would stop asking me if I'm okay. When are you going to finally realize that I'm fine? What's it going to take?" With that Elizabeth stormed out the nearest exit doors.

‘When you stop mourning someone, who has been dead for eight years, and move on with your life,' Angela thought to herself. She was the only one who ever challenged Elizabeth to stop living in the past. She knew she shouldn't and it rarely happened but sometimes she couldn't help herself. They had become sisters in every sense of the word except blood since they met, and Angela was so tired of watching Elizabeth cut herself off from the possibilities of love. She just wanted her to be free so that she could find happiness again.

"Where's Elizabeth?" Nicolas came up to her and asked.

"She went outside to get some air." She didn't tell him about what she had said. She would apologize to her later. But that didn't mean she was giving up. She just had to be more careful about her approach to the subject of Lucky. She had to help Elizabeth move on. She had to.

"Come on let's get our rental car and go to the hotel." he said leading her out the doors. "You guys have a lot of work to do and I need some sleep."

After they had gotten settled into their rooms at the hotel, Elizabeth lay on her bed and fell asleep. She was dreaming of Lucky just like she always did. He was standing in a field of grass that had cattle grazing in it. He was smiling until she got close to him, then he started begging her to be careful with tears in his eyes. He kept telling her to leave and take him with her. Then the grass starting growing really fast and she couldn't see him anymore. She started running to where she could hear him screaming her name and pleading with her to help him escape from his hell. Before she could find him she woke up. She was drenched with sweat and she could tell she had been crying from the tears still falling from her eyes. ‘What does it mean? What's going on?' she thought to herself. She couldn't understand her dream or why she could see Lucky the way she had imagined he would look today. Usually when she thought of him he was older and more mature, but whenever she had dreams of him he was always that really cute sixteen-year-old. Maybe that was because that was how he had looked to her that last night she had spent with him. She decided to write about it in her journal. She didn't use her laptop for that, she always wrote in a book by hand. That way she didn't have to worry about losing her innermost thoughts to a computer virus. She often wondered if Lucky would ever get the chance to read them. She had eight now. One for every year he has been gone and at least a page for every day.

When she had closed the book after finishing her last thought she heard a faint knock at her door.

"Elizabeth, are you awake?" Angela asked through the door.

She considered pretending not to hear her but then decided to answer. "Yes," she called as she placed her journal in her briefcase then opened the door, "Hey Ang, what's up?"

Angela stepped into the room and sat on the end of Elizabeths' bed. "Nothing much, I just wanted to apologize for earlier. I'm sorry if I come across as being pushy or whatever sometimes. It's just that I worry about you and I want you to be happy."

Elizabeth closed her room door and made her way over to the bed. She sighed heavily as she sat next to Angela and looked at her, "I know you worry about me, and I know that you think that I'm wasting my life by constantly spending it alone, but I'm fine."

Angela moved on the bed so that she was facing her fully, "Is that all you want for the rest of your life? To be fine? Don't you want to be in love again?"

Elizabeth got up from the bed and stared out the window with her back to her. "You don't understand, and I don't know what to say to help you see things the way I do," she turned to face her, "So can we please drop this? I'm really tired and need some sleep. We have a pretty full day tomorrow."

Angela couldn't believe how impossible Elizabeth was to reach. She knew how much she and Lucky had shared but she could not figure out why Elizabeth wouldn't let go. If, God forbid, anything ever happened to Nicolas she would feel as though she had died, but eventually she would have to move on, he would want her to. Why couldn't Elizabeth? Angela also knew she wasn't a bad person for feeling that way. She decided she was to tired to argue with her so she played along, "Yeah, we do have a full day tomorrow," she said as she got up from the bed and reached for the door handle, "Elizabeth?"

Elizabeth walked over to her, "Yeah."

"I love you, you know that right? I only want what's best for you."

"I know you do. I love you too. Goodnight."

"Goodnight," Angela said as she was going out the door, "I'll see you in the morning."

When Angela returned to her room Nicolas already had the pregnancy test out of the box. She had been having suspicions for a couple of weeks now that she may be pregnant and she had told Nicolas about them last night. He had looked so cute, both scared and excited at the same time. He had insisted they buy the test on the way to the airport and take it when they arrived in Madrid. She had managed to hold him off since they landed with food and her own work, but she knew this was it. She never said a word to him as she picked up the test and headed straight for the bathroom. Nicolas was sitting on the bed fidgeting for what seemed like hours when she finally came out and stood in front of him. He knew her better than she knew herself. He kneeled down and placed his hands on her abdomen and cried happy tears. When he looked back up at Angelas' own crying eyes they began to laugh. "We're gonna be parents," they said simultaneously.

Lucky knew she was here. He didn't quite know how he knew, only that he could feel it. He was so afraid of what Faison was going to do to her. If anything happened to her, after all this time, and all this suffering, he would kill Faison for sure. He hadn't killed him already because he knew that he had orders out that Elizabeth be hurt should Lucky attack him. ‘Elizabeth please stay away from here, please stay safe.' All he could think about was her safety. He didn't care if he had to give up the chance to see her for real and not through his television screen. It would be extremely painful for him to not see her and be so close, but he would do anything to keep her safe. Anything.

Lucky hadn't seen Faison since he had dropped his bomb on him. He had expected him to be hovering around him, taunting him, but there had been nothing. Lucky had found this strange at first. Now he realized that Faison had wanted him to be left alone to wonder about what was going on. He had wanted Lucky to drive himself mad with the thoughts going through his head. But Lucky wasn't about to lose focus now. There were to many things, to many important people, at stake.

*******************************

Faison had been wondering what to do for months. Things had been so much easier when he hated Luke and Helena Cassidine had been involved. He had grown tired of the whole situation long before she died last summer. She had threatened him time and time again that if he let Lucky go she would inform his own family of who he really was. That made it easier because his hand was being forced. He still found it funny that the old bag had died of natural causes and not been murdered by one of her many enemies, or even one of her staff. His plan had seemed so right at first. Now he didn't know if he could go through with it. He didn't know if he would be able to let go. If it weren't for him, Helena would have killed Lucky a long time ago. He had convinced her that he could still be used in the future. But it was time. He knew what he had to do.
