An Impossible Love - Chapter 7

by: Elisa

Audrey watched her granddaughter as she stared out the window. All day, Liz sat in her room, making no effort to do anything. Audrey was worried, but didn't know how to help her. She could share her story of Wesley to illustrate her point, but she didn't want to use his memory like that. But maybe that's why the elders let her live, to tell this story to her? But that's impossible, there was no way that they could foresee such an event, could they? There was so much that they didn't know about the elders, what they could do, their powers . . .

The sun was setting, casting shades of orange and red across Liz's face. Audrey stood at the door, leaning against the frame. Liz looked so troubled, worried. She hoped that Liz had taken her advice and stay away from the human. She wanted to go over and give her a reassuring hug, but knew that she needed her space. Liz did not acknowledge her presence and Audrey assumed that she was too deep in her thoughts to notice anything. Audrey cocked her head to one side, listening, she went downstairs and prepared to open the door. She had heard someone come up the walk. A soft knock sounded and Audrey pasted on a smile. She opened the door and found a stranger before her. Not a stranger, really, she felt she knew this man but . . . "Yes?"

He shuffled his feet, like a nervous teenager waiting for his date. "Is Elizabeth home?" He had striking blue eyes and sandy blonde hair. He stuck his hands in his pockets and smiled nervously, fighting the urge to run his hand through his hair, a habit that he had picked up from his dad.

"May I ask who's calling?" Audrey asked formally. She wondered if this was the human that Liz was so infatuated with.

"Lucky Spencer, Mrs. Hardy. It's been a long time."

Realization struck her as she remembered, "Luke and Laura's son." She nodded, "Come in." She stepped aside and let him in, closing the door. "I'll go get her." She went up the stairs and frowned, should she have let him in? Should she even tell Liz that he was here? Was she encourging something that shouldn't be? Nagging questions, as she rapped gently on Liz's open door.

Liz turned her head slightly, "Yes, gram?"

"There's someone here to see you."

Liz let her hearing expand and heard Lucky's breathing pattern. She stifled a groan, even though she was mad that he hadn't listened to her warning, she was also glad that he was here. "Okay." She stood and went downstairs, ignoring her grandmother's questioning gaze.

~~~
They were walking side by side, close, but not too close. Liz tucked a strand of stray hair behind her ear, "Why are you here?" She asked, gazing at him out of the corner of her eye. It was windy that night, but Liz didn't mind, she liked the feel of the air around her.
"I couldn't stay away." He stopped and faced her. "I meant what I said, Elizabeth. I want to know you."
She regarded him cautiously, "Why?"
"I don't know. I just feel like I have to."
"I see." She bit the inside of her mouth, watching him.
"Don't you want to know me too?" He asked, a hint of longing in his voice.
She wanted to lie and tell him no, but something told her to be honest with him. "Yes."
He smiled, his whole face lighting up. "That's good." They continued on, both of them not wanting to start. "So, where are you from?"
"Here."
"Really?"
"Yeah, my parents wanted to move as soon as I was born. We went everywhere."
"I know how you feel, I moved around a lot as a kid too."
"How come? Your dad in the military?"
The image of his dad in a uniform, obeying orders, made him laugh. "No, no nothing like that. We were on the run, from a mobster, Frank Smith."
"Wow. Is that how you learned to fight?"
Lucky shifted uncomfortably, "No."
Sensing that he didn't want to talk about it, Liz changed the subject. "Do you have family?"
He nodded, "Oh yeah. A lot of family. Most of them live here." He looked at her, "You already met my sister."
"Really?" Liz went back through memory, trying to picture her. She hadn't met many people, just Lulu. A look of understanding came over her, that's why she felt an instant connection with her, she was Lucky's sister. "Lulu is your sister?"
"Yeah. But I guess I use that term loosely. We don't get along." Lucky said the last part quietly, but Liz heard it clearly, "Not anymore." He cleared his throat, "So was that your grandmother?"
"Yes. She's been here for a really long time."
"Must have moved a lot too, huh?"
"Yeah."
"If you don't mind my asking, how old are you?"
"I'm not a hundred, if that's what you're implying." They both chuckled over that, "I'm twenty-five."
"Me too."
"Hmm." They settled in a comfortable silence as they stopped at the docks. Liz looked out over the water, her vampire eyes missing nothing. She peered over the edge, seeing beyond the murky water, to the very bottom.
The rocks, the small fish, the garbage could be clearly seen. She looked up and wondered not for the first time, what it would be like to see things through human eyes, not to see every detail, but to see what was. Liz turned and went to sit next to Lucky.
"I used to come here often as a kid, just staring out into the darkness. It helped me think, you know?"
"Yeah, I know." Her eyes scanned the habour and spotted a far off island. There was a huge house on it, it almost looked forboding. "What's that?" She asked, pointing.
"Huh?" Lucky squinted and formed a hazy view of Wyndamere. "Oh, that's Spoon Island. Or what my dad calls Spook Island." He chuckled, "My brother lives out there."
"Kinda isolated isn't it?"
Lucky shrugged, "He likes it. He isn't the friendly type." Although Lucky wasn't entirely sure anymore. They haven't spoken in years. The only reason he knew he lived there was because of the reports that he asked for. Without knowing why, he reached out and took her hand, entwining his fingers with hers.
Liz started with surprise at the sudden contact but did not jerk her hand away. Surprisingly, she returned his grasp. They did not look at eachother, afraid that it would break the spell that they were in. In the back of her mind, Liz heard the warning, but she chose to ignore it.
"Well, well, well. Isn't this cozy?"
Startled, they dropped eachothers hands and found the source of the voice. She was slim, tall, and dressed in a fine designer suit. Her white blonde hair was pulled back in an elagant twist. Her green eyes sparkled with glee.
Lucky jumped up, "What are you doing here?" Liz stood, a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. She knew who this was, knew that her worst fear would come true.
Helena broadened her grin, "So you know who I am. That is good, saves me the trouble of introducing myself."
Lucky narrowed his eyes, "We need no introductions, Helena. Why don't you fly back to where ever you came from?"
"My, my, such strong words for a human, don't you think, Elizabeth, dear?"
Liz shrank behind Lucky, fear overpowering her senses.
"Give it a rest, grandmother. Can't you see that you're not wanted?" Nikolas said, stepping out of the darkness.
Helena turned and nodded, "Nikolas, dear, when did you get back?"
"Yesterday." He met Lucky's eyes and grinned, "Lucky."
"Nikolas." He gave a nod of acknowledgement.
Helena smiled, "I see our conversation shall be saved for another day. Do not worry, Elizabeth, you are safe for now." She gave her a wink and left.
They watched her go and relaxed. The brothers looked at eachother for a moment before Nikolas went in for a bear crushing hug. "I missed you, little brother."
"I missed you too, big brother." Nikolas held him tighter and Lucky had trouble breathing. "God, are you working out or what?"
"What? Sorry." Nikolas let go and surveyed him at arms length. "You look good."
"So do you." Liz cleared her throat, reminding them that they were not alone. "Sorry, Elizabeth this is Nikolas, my brother. Nikolas, this is Elizabeth, my --" He stopped unsure of how to introduce her. "Friend."
Nikolas gazed at her with interest. She had shoulder length brown hair and piercing blue eyes. She was petite, he was almost towering over her.
They shook hands and smiled. Each testing out the other's strength.
He broke off first, and said gallantly, "Quite a grip you got."
"So do you." Most humans would have flinched at how much pressure she exerted, Liz regarded him closely, he wasn't human, but he didn't look like a vampire either. His brown eyes searched hers, making her nervous, like he was looking for something. Feeling slightly unsettled, she said, "I have to run, I'll see you around. Good bye, Lucky." She gave him a lopsided grin and ran off, leaving him staring after her.
They watched her go and Nikolas studied Lucky. He had this far away look in his eyes, like he wanted to follow her. "So, how's life treating you?" He asked, moving over to the bench.
"Okay, I guess." Lucky answered absently, still staring after fer.
"Just okay? New girlfriend?"
"What?" Lucky shook his head and grinned, "Not even close, big bro. We're not even friends, if you want to get technical. But something about her . . ." His voice trailed off, he stuck his hands in his pocket and stared out over the water. The wind picked up, ruffling Lucky's hair.
Nikolas sat back, enjoying the fact that Lucky seemed to be falling in love. "What do you say you come with me back to Wyndamere? I'm sure that Mrs. Lansbary has some hot food cooking."
"I don't know . . . I should really be getting home." He turned and smiled, "Why don't you come home with me? I'm sure mom and Lulu would be happy to see you."
"Okay. I was meaning to give Lulu a call anyways." He got up and started in the direction of the Spencer home. "You coming?" Nikolas asked, when he noticed his brother hadn't moved.
"Yeah, coming." Lucky nodded distractedly. His thoughts still occupied with Elizabeth and how good her hand had felt in his.
~~~

As Liz was walking home, she thought of Lucky. What was it about him that made her want to touch him so? She wanted to hold him and never let go. And what about his brother? He was a mystery as well. He didn't look like vampire, and he didn't feel like one either, yet he didn't even bat an eyelash at how hard she gripped his hand. He couldn't be a made vampire because she would have smelled it, sensed it. They had this distinct odor of decay, but so faint that only vampires could detect it.

She stopped suddenly and quickly turned around, trying to see if anyone was near. She was alone. She narrowed her eyes, she could've sworn that someone was following her . . .

Shrugging, she hurried home. She couldn't help thinking that all her problems started when she stepped foot in Port Charles.

~~~
The next morning Frisco checked out of the hotel. He wanted to leave right away, but had an urge to go see his brother. They haven't spoken in so long and Frisco missed him dearly. Deciding that it would be a waste not to go see him, Frisco drove to the hospital. He wondered if he was still married to Bobbie, how his nephew was doing. It shamed him to know that in all the years he had been away, he hardly gave a second thought to Tony. He went insude, the familiar hallways welcoming him. Not much had changed since the last time he set foot in this place. He approached the information desk and asked for Dr. Tony Jones.
The nurse smiled apoligectly, "Sorry, Dr. Jones is off duty today. He just left."
"Oh." Frisco replied, dismayed. How would he find him now? He didn't even know where he lived. "Thank you." He said, turning to leave.
"Would you like to leave a message?" The woman called after him.
He shook his head, "No message, thank you." He hurried out the door, wondering if it was better this way. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his keys. The keyring caught a snag in his pocket and Frisco fumbled to undo it. When it was free, he looked up and dropped his keys. Transfixed by the girl in front of him.
It was her smile that caught his attention, making her face radiate with happiness. She wore a blue orderly uniform. She was a volunteer. She brushed her hair away from her face, "Hello." She said, her voice almost musical. She bent down to retrieve his keys and handed it to him.
"Thank you." Frisco whispered, staring in awe at his daughter. She was even more beautiful in person. The picture couldn't do her justice. Her golden hair shone in the sunlight, framing her heart shaped face. Her skin was creamy white, she wore little make up. He stared into her eyes, a shade the was a tad lighter than his.
She gave him a faltering smile as a look crossed her face. "Do I know you?" She asked hestiantly.
Frisco took a deep breath, "No, I'm afraid not. I would remember a face like yours."
She blushed, her eyes searching his. "Okay." She nodded and took a step toward the hospital doors, she cast one last troubled look in his direction before entering through the doors.
~~~

Feeling a bit self-conscience, Lulu stood outside the Scorpio house, waiting for someone to answer the door. She had woken up with the realization that she knew who that man was. She had seen his picture in Georgie's room. He was her father. She knew it.

The door opened and Felicia gave her a welcome smile. "Lulu! What a surprise! Georgie is taking a shower right now, but you're welcome to wait." She said, ushering Lulu into the house. "Why don't you go wait in her room? I'll let her know that you're here."

"Okay." She followed Felicia up the stairs and around the corner to Georgie's room. She entered it and sat on the bed. Down the hall, she heard Georgie's mom knock on the bathroom door. Their voices were muffled, but Lulu got the gist of it.

Felicia poked her head in the door, "She'll be right out." Lulu smiled and nodded. She and Georgie had been friends for as long as she could remember. They were close but not as close as she and Cindy. They had drifted apart, both travelling in different circles, but Lulu still considered her a good friend.

"Hey, Lulu." Georgie said, walking into her room with a towel wrapped around her head. She pulled her pink terry cloth robe tighter around herself. "What brings you by?"

Lulu wanted to come right out and say it, but how could she? "I wanted to talk to you about something."

Georgie smiled and sat next to her on the bed. "Okay. It must be really important to come see me this early. The Lulu I remember hated to get up before noon on a vacation."

Lulu chuckled, "Things change, I guess." She looked around her room and noted all the changes that her friend had made over the years. "I like what you've done with your room."

"Thanks." Georgie unwrapped the towel and her hair came tumbling down. She went to her closet and pulled out an outfit. "What do you think?"

"It looks good."

She looked at it and nodded, "I'm going to wear this today."

Lulu politely turned her head away as Georgie got dressed. Now that she was here, Lulu couldn't very well blurt out that she had seen her father yesterday. She clenched her hands, her nails digging into her skin. Maybe it was a mistake to come here.

"All done. You can turn around now." Georgie caught Lulu's eye and smiled, "Did you want to do something today? Like go to the mall? We haven't done something together in a long time."

"Yeah," Lulu let out a sigh, "I'd like that."

"Good." She went to her mirror and began to brush her hair. "You know, if I didn't know better, I'd say you were dying to tell me something."

Lulu went up beside her, both looking in the mirror. They stared at their reflection for a bit, before Lulu turned away. "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure." She replied, twisting her hair up, and fastening it with several bufferfly clips.

"What's your dad like?"

"What?" Georgie turned to look at her, "That's a silly question. You've met Mac before. Maybe it's been so long that you've forgotten. I guess you can say he's nice, gentle, very handsome," She giggled, "He listens to me, always has something nice to say to me . . ."

Lulu sighed, not sure now if it was a good thing to mention Frisco. It's obvious that Georgie considered Mac her father now . . .

"Why do you ask?"

"No reason. You almost done? We should get going if we want to catch the bus."

"Almost." Georgie gave her a strange look before picking up her purse. "You sure you're okay?"

"Fine." Lulu gave her a big smile, "Come on, let's go!"

They both laughed at her eagerness. "Okay." They went downstairs to tell Felicia where they were going and was out the door in a flash. "There are so many things I have to tell you, Lulu . . ." Georgie exclaimed, and began to tell her everything that happened in the last several months. Lulu half listened, her thoughts still on Frisco and how she should tell her friend.

~~~
Maxie sat in the hospital cafateria, lost in thought. She held a strong cup of black coffee in her hands, inhaling the bitter aroma. The man she had met earlier . . . she knew she knew him from somewhere before, but she couldn't place it. His face, his eyes, they looked so familiar . . . almost like he was her father. But that couldn't be, her dad had left them years ago. He wouldn't dare show his face here . . . he didn't have the guts. Or did he? It bothered her that she wouldn't be able to pick out her father in a crowd. It wasn't supposed to be like that. But she had Mac now, he was her father, in every way that counts. He was there for her when Frisco wasn't. He didn't care about them, why should she care about him?
"Hey Maxie, care if I join you?"
Maxie looked up and smiled, "Of course." She indicated at the empty chairs. "How are you today, Bobbie?"
"I'm doing good. But the question should be how you're doing."
Maxie grimaced, "I look that bad, huh?"
Bobbie laughed, "No, it's just that you were looking at you coffee like it held the answer to all your problems."
"I wish." She put down her cup and smiled. "Are you on a break?"
"Just wanted to sit down for a minute. How are you doing? Is school going okay?"
"Yeah, it is. My course load for next semester is a killer, but I think I can do it."
"Aspiring to be a doctor is a difficult task."
"You can say that again. But mom and dad are so proud of me, I don't want to let them down."
"I'm sure you won't, sweetie."
"Bobbie?"
"Yes?"
"Would you recignize your own father, if you bumped into him on the street?"
Taken aback, Bobbie smiled, "I hope not, sweetie, my father was a, pardon me for saying it, but he was an a--hole. So even if I did know him, I wouldn't acknowledge him. Why do you ask?"
"I just thought I saw my -- Frisco, this morning, that's all."
"Frisco? Wow, but he hasn't been back in town for years. It was probably your imagination."
"Yeah, probably." Maxie stared into her cup, "It's just that the way he looked at me and his eyes, his smile . . . I don't know."
"Is everythign okay at home? I haven't talked to Felicia lately, so I'm kinda out of the loop."
"Everything is fine. Forget I said anything." She glanced at her watch, "My break's over. I'll see you later." She said, getting up and leaving.
"Bye." Bobbie frowned. Maybe it was time to pay Felicia a visit.
~~~

After a long day at the mall, Lulu and Georgie cut through the park on their way to Lulu's house. They had talked non stop, Lulu told Georgie all about Darren. And Georgie was estactic. Every girl had a crush on on Darren Jackson at PC High, including Georgie.

"Did he really ask you out?" She asked excitedly.

Lulu nodded. "He called me this morning to see if I wanted to take a run with him, but I told him I couldn't."

"You told him what?!"

"But I told him that we could go for dinner tonight."

"Well, okay then." She was silent for a minute, "Wait a minute. You turned down Darren Jackson so you could spend the day with me?" She said bewildered.

"I don't think that's so hard to believe." Lulu replied with an amused smile on her face.

"I just mean . . ."

"I know." Lulu reached out and grabbed her hand, "I miss talking to you, Georgie. I miss a lot of things."

Touched by her friends confession, she returned her grip. "I miss you, too." They rounded the corner and Lulu let out a gasp. She dropped her bags and her hand turned clammy. "What's the matter, Lulu?" Georgie asked, concerned.

Lulu opened her mouth to say something but couldn't. She couldn't believe it, there was Frisco Jones, sitting on the park bench, not a care in the world. They had to get out of here. "Come on Georgie, we have to go." She hissed.

"What?" She looked at her with a confused smile, "What's wrong?"

"Nothing, we have to go." Picking up her bags, she tugged at her hand, forcing her to backtrack.

"But . . . your house is the other way." She protested.

"We'll go the long way." Lulu cast one more glance at him and breathed a sigh of relief, he hadn't spotted them yet. They were almost out of earshot when they heard Maxie's outraged cry.

~~~
Maxie had missed the bus and was hurrying back to her house. The sky was dark, it looked like it was going to rain. She wanted to get home before the downpour came. She cut through the park and almost stumbled if it hadn't been for the man that caught her.
"Thank you." She said looking up at his face, recognizing him immediatly.
"You're welcome." He said, letting go of her.
She narrowed her eyes, he was her father, she was sure of it. "What the hell are you doing here?"
A flash of fear flickered in his eyes, he opened his mouth to say something, but Maxie cut him off.
"I don't want to hear it. I don't want anything from you. Do you understand? Nothing. Now get out of my way, I'm leaving." She tried to brush past him, but he caught her arm. She whipped her head around and scowled at him. "Let me go. Now."
"Not so fast, Maxie. I want to talk to you." He said, his hand still firmly locked on her forearm. He felt a sting on his cheek and let her go. She had slapped him. He looked into the angry face of his daughter and finally understood why he had stayed away for so long.
"Don't you dare touch my sister!"
They both turned at the sound of Georgie's voice. Maxie watched in amazment as her sister and Lulu Spencer came charging around the corner. Lulu looked pale, staring at him with wide eyes. Georgie was furious, her face red with anger. She stepped in between them and glared up at their father, totally unaware of who he was.
"It's okay, Georgie." Maxie placed her hand on her sister's shoulder , trying to calm her. "He won't hurt me. Come on, let's go."
Maxie took her hand and led her away, practically dragging her. Lulu followed them, unsure of what else to do.
"Max, who is he? You look really mad."
"He's nobody, Georgie. Nobody." They stopped and she stared down at her sister, "And the next time you see him, don't talk to him, don't look at him. Just walk away, okay? Promise me."
Seeing the scared look on her older sister's face, Georgie readily agreed. "I promise."
"Good." Maxie pulled her in for a hug, "I love you, Georgie. Thank you for coming to my rescue."
"I love you, too, Maxie."
