Once in their room, Lucky let down his guard a little. He made sure the windows were securely locked, that the curtains were closed tight, and that the door was locked and chained. Once that was done he turned to look at Elizabeth again. To see the face he thought he’d never see again was almost too much for him. He reached his hand to her and pulled her close. Elizabeth closed her eyes. She could feel him breathing. She could hear his heart beat. Just like in her dream.
But this time, she vowed, she would never look away. They stood holding each other in a trance for the longest time. Elizabeth was afraid she’d move and break the spell and he’d be gone again. Lucky just wanted to feel her close to him. She brought him a peace he hadn’t felt in so long. Finally he pulled away to look at her.
“You look unbelievable.”
“Lucky, I was asleep. I look like I was asleep.” Elizabeth blushed.
“You look like the angel you have always been.” Lucky looked at her deeply. “The first picture Faison showed me of you, you were at the docks staring out at the water. You looked so sad. He also showed me pictures of you at my memorial service. Elizabeth, I am so sorry I caused you pain.” Tears were running down Lucky’s cheeks
. “Lucky, you were the one that was held captive. Knowing you were alive when we all thought you were dead. I can’t think of worse pain than that. And it’s not like you went and got kidnapped on purpose. It wasn’t your fault.” Elizabeth wiped his tears away then looked down. “Did you know that the police report said that the candles that I gave you started the fire? I thought the fire was my fault.”
“That bastard.” Lucky was furious. “Not only does he make you think I’m dead, he lets you think its your fault. I have never met anyone so sick.” Lucky paced the room in anger. Lucky’s violent reaction startled Elizabeth. “Lucky, its OK. It’s over. Just never light another candle, OK?” Elizabeth tried to make things a little lighter. But Lucky continued to pace the room.
“We’ve got to come up with a way to deal with this lunatic. Have you seen my dad lately?”
“Well, actually he came by Kelly’s to tell me good-bye the other day. He was heading out for awhile. He took your death really hard.”
“Damn. What a time for him to go AWOL. There’s no one else that I trust to help get this guy. I’m not sure I want to take him down alone.”
“What about the police? I mean, isn’t that their job?” Elizabeth knew the Spencer reaction to police, but it seemed to her that a pretty bad crime had been committed and that the police should be brought into this. There was no way she wanted Lucky to try and take this guy by himself. She wouldn’t let him risk his life that way.
“Elizabeth, I want to take this guy down. Not maybe see the police catch him and then he gets some high-powered lawyer and walks away.” Lucky answered vehemently.
“So we’ll call Taggert. He helped with Tom. Tom didn’t walk away, Lucky, remember? You can’t do this alone. Its too risky.” Liz was adamant too.
“If my dad were here, he could help me figure this out. The biggest problem is that I don’t know where Faison went. He left a couple of weeks ago, but if the guard knew where he was, I couldn’t get it out of him. I don’t even know where to start looking for him. And I’m not going to sit around here and wait for them to come looking for you.” Lucky was frustrated at Luke being gone and not having a good plan. That was not the Spencer way.
“Why not call the cops and then let them wait for him to come after me. I mean you said he promised that he’d kill me if you escaped.” Liz tried to offer suggestions.
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean Faison will come here. He’s got lots of idiots working for him to do his dirty work. I’ve got to think of something better than that.”
“Come on, Lucky. You don’t have to do this alone. Look, after the fire Taggert was very decent to me. He made sure I got your subway token back. He even gave me his direct number and said to call if I needed anything. Why don’t we call it? He’s helped us before…”
“I don’t like it, Elizabeth…” Lucky paced and frowned. “But it doesn’t look like we have many choices. You win. Call him. But don’t tell him what it’s about. Just ask him to meet you here.”
Elizabeth dug through her purse and found Taggert’s card. She quickly dialed the number. Lt. Taggert was working late again at the PCPD. Things were still a mess with Dara, and work was the only thing that took her off of his mind. He was deep into a case when his cell phone rang.
“Taggert” he answered.
“Lt. Taggert, this is Elizabeth Webber.”
“Good evening Miss Webber. What can I do for you?” Taggert was a bit surprised to hear from Elizabeth. His heart still went out to the pretty young girl who had lost so much in the last year and a half.
“Well, it’s hard to explain on the phone, but I really need to talk to you. Is there any way you could meet me?” Elizabeth’s voice shook a bit.
Taggert’s curiosity was aroused. “Sure. When?”
“Right now? I’m at the Port Charles Hotel. Room 421. I really appreciate it Lieutenant.”
“No problem. I’ll be right over.” Taggert frowned and he hung up. He sure hoped that more trouble hadn’t found Elizabeth. She’d had more than her share.
Elizabeth hung up and smiled at Lucky. “He’ll be right over.”
“Great.” Lucky still was concerned about bringing in the police. Luke would never do that.
“You hungry?” Elizabeth tried to take Lucky’s mind off of Taggert. “We could order room service. Or I could run out and get Eli’s.”
“The only thing I want right now is for you to be safe.” Lucky walked over to Liz and put his arms around her again. She was all he wanted; he never wanted to let her go again.
In his arms, Elizabeth felt exactly the same way. “I missed you so much,” she whispered.
“So tell me what happened while I was gone. I walked by Kelly’s and saw Emily with some guy. Who is he?”
“His name is Juan. Emily is crazy about him, but he worries me. He just kind of showed up. Doesn’t seem to have any family, but sure does have some attitude.”
“Hmm,” Lucky smiled and looked at Liz. “I know a few people who would say the same thing about us.”
Liz smiled back. “I guess you’re right. But I just don’t want to see Emily get hurt.”
“Faison showed me a picture of you and Nicholas from the Nurse’s Ball.” Suddenly Elizabeth felt ashamed that she had gone that night. “You looked pretty.”
“I really didn’t want to go Lucky. All I could think about was last year and the number I did with you. But Nicholas asked me to design the Nurse’s Ball T-shirt and I did a bunch of the scenery, so I kind of felt obligated when he asked me to go.”
“You did the T-shirt? Cool. Think I could still get one?” Lucky was proud of her for doing something like that.
“It wasn’t that great. Nicholas was just trying to help me get my mind off of things. He’s done a lot of that.”
“So why didn’t he take Katherine to the ball? Has he finally wised up?”
“He’s getting there, I think. But he couldn’t have her sitting at the same table with his uncle. Besides Katherine was too busy fighting with Lucy. Who ended up in her underwear again, by the way.” Lucky laughed at the thought of that tradition. Their conversation was interrupted by a knock at the door.
