Kristen was stripped and handcuffed to the altar. A Christmas tree burned, and so did the church. Later, the overhead chandelier crashed down on Bo and Billie's wedding. Holy men were attacked by a panther. A snake and swarm of bees were close behind. The Desecrator was on the loose.

When Satan came to Salem, he could not have chosen a more unlikely host than Marlena Evans Brady. Her only fall from grace was a one-night stand with her "ex-husband" John, which produced baby Belle. Roman was devastated and divorced her when the truth came out.

What opened Marlena to demonic possession was drug and/or drug induced nightly outings with Stefano. No stranger to the criminal underworld, and at least one other world, DiMera unwittingly led Marlena into harm's way. The psychedelics, lack of sleep, and hedonistic reveries weakened her physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

As The Desecrator, Satan used Marlena to stir havoc in the lives of Salem residents. Through Marlena, the devil manipulated further estrangement between Carrie and Austin; had Marlena show up at Bo and Billie's wedding reception in the nude; made her shoot her police guard at the hospital and take aim at John, too. The devil managed, by turning Marlena's physical body into a Kristen clone, to nearly seduce John, who was then trying to fulfill his priestly vows and adhere to celibacy.

Prior to and during a lengthy exorcism, the devil also had lasting influence on both Tony DiMera, who was never quite the same again, and Kristen who learned to turn little white lies into dark deception. The devil certainly left his mark on many in Salem.
