Regarding Geegaw Hackwrench

"...the greatest pilot in aviation history!" --Montery Jack

Obviously, Geegaw was the best there was at what he did (according to Monty & Gadget, that is), and what he did best was pilot 'planes. He was also left-handed (which is why Gadget had trouble opening the skylight. ) However, little else is known about Gadget's father. The only references to him in the series were in part 3 of "To The Rescue".

"That's the point,Gadget! Your father was a flyer. You're an inventor. And that's what we need now--an inventor!" --Chip

Some people seem to think he was also an inventor. Check out these panels from CDRR #17:

CDRR#17

I'm not sure where they got that idea from. Sure, he must have known something about aviation mechanics in order to keep the Screaming Eagle in top-notch condition; but this doesn't necessarily mean he could have designed and built an airplane (or anything else). Gadget said the 'Eagle was "an experimental model from the Ultra-Flite Laboratories", so Geegaw didn't build it. Gadget also commented once that she's "mostly self-taught" in the field of engineering (in the episode "An Elephant Never Suspects", I think). The way Geegaw REALLY looked!

If Geegaw had been an inventor, Gadget would have given him credit for teaching her--right? Too right!

Obviously, the artists who worked on CDRR #17 were not given anything to work from when they tried to draw Geegaw (notice the heavy shadows and the fact that we don't see his face), and they didn't watch "To The Rescue" very closely, either. For comparison purposes, a picture (the ONLY one) of Geegaw, frame-captured (by Candy Courtnier) from part 3 of "To The Rescue" , is shown here, to the right. Notice that he's wearing an aviator's scarf and hat. And he doesn't wear shoes (or pants, for that matter. Hmm. Come to think of it, Gadget's the only Rescue Ranger who wears pants. *Ahem!* I'd better stop this line of thinking before it gets me into trouble... )

Several Rescue Ranger fan fiction writers have used Geegaw as a character. Meghan's and Aivar's versions of Geegaw differ greatly, but were interesting to read. Well, *I* thought they were--even though Meghan felt the need to rename him "Wilec" ;)
Judge for yourself, after you have read "Luvbirds", and "Catch a Rainbow", by Meghan Brunner, "Fires in Hearts" and "Sisters" by Aivars Liepa. (See my links page for links to their sites.)Others worth mentioning are Mike Gibby's "A Matter of Life and Death" and Matt Plotecher's "Fly Into the Light".

Why "Wilec"?

I asked Meghan, "Why 'Wilec'? (Assuming that "Geegaw" is a nickname and not his real name??)"
Her reply was:
The name book I got it from said it meant "Eagle singing while flying." It suits him quite well, wouldn't you agree?
Makes sense to me (now). Comments anyone?

"...He'll be missed."
"He already is..."

Okay, I'm done. Take me back to Kat's Rescue Rangers Page

Nope, I rather go to Aivars' Comic Scans Directory and see issue #17 for myself.
