WALTONS DIGEST 31-2001:

Hi everyone,

By the time everyone on the list gets this, James will have completed his Theatre Studies exam. One down and another (music) next Sunday morning. Then he has to wait for the written ones to start at the beginning of November. It feels like countdown. Tim is very busy too, trying to complete his semesters work before his exams start (and finish...2 in one day) on November 1. Both Rod and I have been studying this semester too, and we're both madly doing assignments too. Both of our subjects end at the end of October. I'll be happy when mine does. The readings very heavy for it.

We're a bit light on for Waltons news, but I do look forward to hearing a lot about the reunion from next week. I hope that everyone who is lucky enough to be going has a wonderful time and is able to relax and think about things other than the war on terrorism for the weekend.

What is life like over there at the moment? There continue to be a lot of reports in our papers here, and of course the anthrax outbreaks are not sounding too good at all. I really can't see what these terrorist people hope to achieve. If they really think that God is on their side then something must be terribly wrong with them. We will be getting the special episode of The West Wing on Tuesday night, and I look forward to seeing that, although I hope that it doesn't hit too hard.

Talk to you all again soon. Goodnight everyone,

Karen.

An excellent Digest as always. I just mailed in my deposit for the Walton Fan Club Reunion, scheduled for October 20th and 21st in Schuyler and Lynchburg,Virginia,USA.

I understand that Lynn Hamilton, Jon and Lisa Walmsley, Judy Norton, Mary McDonough, Kami Cotler, and Deanna Lund are scheduled to appear. I look forward to seeing and speaking with these fine people. I'm sure Carolyn Grinnell is putting together a smashingly great program as she has done before. This is my fourth year at the Walton Reunion.

I'm sorry, Karen, I accidentally pressed the wrong button and sent you my e-mail before I could complete it.

As I was saying, I am really excited about the upcoming Walton Reunion in Virginia,USA. I am especially looking forward to being with all the pretty "Walton girls". I believe Carolyn Grinnell is putting together a fine program as always. I'll fill you and all Digest readers in after I return.

-Patrick

KAREN'S COMMENT: Have a great time. I'll be looking forward to hearing all about it. :-)

Hi Karen,

I too am saddened by the crisis in the US, and hit me especially hard, since I visited the WTC in NYC for graduation in 1987. We were at Windows on the World.

I am also comforted by the words of President Bush, in bringing countries together in times of Crisis. I am also moved by the outpouring of support from all over. In November, I plan to bus down to NYC from the east coast, to see for myself the massive effort of recovery. My hat goes off to Mayor Rudy Jiuliani for pulling the city together, and work for a common goal of recovery.

The Walton episodes for me, are a comfort at this time, for we are now fighting our own war of Terrorism in times like these. My mom brought me a shirt back from Florida, that has the twin towers draped with a yellow ribbon, and an American flag, at the bottom it says, " 9-11-01 Gone, but not forgotten" I wear this shirt with pride!

I hope all is well, to my neighbors of the south, and far and wide.

We unite in this together, as we stand shoulder to shoulder with pride and dignity.

The city of Victoria, is doing it's part to contribute to the massive effort. Next weekend, October 12-14, the community will be holding a telethon for people to call in, and donate to the Red Cross Victim's relief Fund. I am so proud to be part of something like this.

God bless us all, each and every one!

Goodnight Everyone!

Nicole

KAREN'S COMMENT: The telethon on TV seemed like it was really successful too. Too bad that it had to be for such a sad reason.

Karen, Since I wrote last, we got some better news about my cousin. He will be staying on his base in the states training those who are going over to do whatever needs to be done to resolve this.

Beth

KAREN'S COMMENT: I'm really pleased to hear this Beth. It's not a place where I'd like any of my family or friends to head to at the moment.

The Waltons has not been on this past week because of the Star Trek New Generation.

Last Thursday however was David Harpers 40th birthday. As I posted on Ralph's Forum, October 4 was the day of many anniversaries. It was also the 44th anniversary of Sputnik which coincided with the premiere of The Leave it to Beaver show, both of which occurred 4 years before "Jimbob" was born.

Also October 4 was the 56th anniversary 'Waltonwise; of the reopening of the Dew Drop Inn

Donald

KAREN'S COMMENT: And of course, it's the 30th anniversary of The Homecoming this year too.

Your opportunity shops sound like what we call thrift shops. Where people donate their old clothes for resale. Usually these are for a charity, like Goodwill or the Salvation Army (which are national charities) or local ones. There, you can also usually find some assortment of toys, furniture, books, appliances, bedding, and kitchen dishes.

We also have consignment shops which are basically thrift shops that work for their own profit, instead of for charity.

All of these are also called "second hand stores". And I LOVE having a look through them. You can find the neatest things sometimes!

Larissa

KAREN'S COMMENT: I think ours may have originally been called thrift shops too, because I remember when I was young that our "junk" stalls at fetes used to be called thrift stalls. You can certainly pick up some good stuff if you look hard enough. Especially costume stuff. I love looking for second hand books too.

I have been out of touch with the digest and with tv for a while...did TNN drop Walton's altogether? I can't seem to find it here in America anymore, or is it just changed in time slot? Thanks for any help. Julie

KAREN'S COMMENT: Julie, I think you'll probably tell from this digest that TNN have given The Waltons a holiday, but hopefully you'll find it on again this week. :-)

Hello Karen, hello everyone!! I have not had the time to respond to the last couple of digests... although I have wanted to. The special editions touched my heart, like many others I would like to thank those who do not live in the USA for their love and support. My friends and family are all safe, but some how it feels like I have lost .... something. The events left me feeling empty and helpless. Like the Waltons all I can do is pray ... for the victims, the rescuers, the city of NY, and all the men and women in the military. My heart goes out to the many innocent people in Afganistan ... just had to get that off my chest ..

I believe Lisa was looking for the Waltons. I live in Illinois and it is on at 11:00 a.m. which is a bad time for me so I miss it often. Also, my uncle was in Kansas City, Missouri recently and got to see Michael Learned in a play there!! I don't know the name or the particulars on it, but he brought me a program, knowing how I love The Waltons .. haven't seen it yet, when I do I will fill you all in!! That's it for now. Be safe and take care!! Peace and Love, Judy

KAREN'S COMMENT: I'll look forward to hearing about the play Judy. Also I can only say ditto for what you wrote about the terrorism. I think the Internet has had a lot to do with bringing the world much closer together, but this tragedy has really united us all. Although (so far) all the attacks have been in the USA, we have all had to unite together in a way that I don't think the world has really seen before.

This is a letter which was sent to a person running a Bewitched website, but also sent to us because of the Waltons side of things:

It's me again. I just had to tell you how much I love your website. It's almost as entertaining as "Bewitched" itself.

I'm a huge fan of both "Bewitched" and another classic TV series,"The Waltons". In ten days time I will gather with other Walton fans in Virginia,of course, where it took place.

There is an interesting connection between "Bewitched" and "The Waltons". "Bewitched" was cancelled the year "The Waltons" debuted-1972.

Also, the actors on both shows appeared on each other's series. Will Geer (Grandpa) appeared in a two-part "Bewitched" episode as George Washington. Helen Kleeb (Mamie Baldwin) appeared on an episode as one of Samantha's friends at a luncheon. This was the episode with the hexed popcorn. Nora Marlowe (Flossie Brimmer) appeared as a prospect to be the Stephens' maid. Eric Scott (Ben Walton) appeared as Darrin's young friend "Herbie" in the episode "Out of the Mouths of Babes".

"Bewitched" cast members appearing on "The Waltons" included George Tobias as a "junk dealer" in a recurring role. Also, Dick Sargent appeared as Ben's commanding officer in the Walton episode "The Outrage".

It should also be noted that Agnes Moorehead appeared in the movie "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" with Ellen Corby (Grandma) and Helen Kleeb.

Also, both "Bewitched" and "The Waltons" were filmed at the Burbank Studios. I thought I read that Erin Murphy was offered a part on "The Waltons" but turned it down. So "Tabitha" could I guess been a Walton as well (Note, one of the Walton girls was named Erin).

The reasons I love both these wonderful shows is because they both had what it took: Fine actors and actresses, as well as excellent writing, direction, and production. These are the reasons why these shows are popular today and will live forever. Take care and God bless.

Patrick

KAREN'S COMMENT: It's great that you were able to spell out all the details like that Patrick. Thank you. I think I'll have to start watching Bewitched to find all the actors. I'd love to see Will Geer as George Washington. :-))

Hello Karen and All, Not a lot of Walton stuff going on, except that they are now on TNN at 11:00am EST and Noon EST. The shows have been a great help for me since September 11th. It is a break away from reality for a while, which I feel we all need at one time or another.

I wanted to let everyone know that there are several of the Walton Christmas CDs on ebay if they don't have them yet. I believe there are 2 or 3 of the album that came out in the 70's too.

Good Night All, -----Jennifer

KAREN'S COMMENT: It's always good to remind Waltons fans that Ebay is a fantastic source of Waltons memorabilia. I just had a look and there's lots of stuff at the moment. Some videos too for those building collections. www.ebay.com

Hi Karen, thanks for being here for us Walton fans, its so good to see your mail. I'm a Firefighter from Tampa, FL. It saddens me to see my brothers being buried every day on TV, I still watch & tape all The Waltons shows everyday @ 11:00 am - 1:00 monday - Friday, I'm saving them for my grand kids to see. I have a firefighter friend from NY that lost a brother, nephew & his dad in that mess, his dad had 3 more days to retire. He like all of us is having a hard time, but he sent me some real good pics that have not been shown on CNN.

Again thank god we have friends like you from down under, and all the other countries that are helping us, I love you all,

Jerry

KAREN'S COMMENT: You're very welcome. One of the biggest tragedies of the whole thing I think, is that so many of the rescuers lost their lives trying to save others. Any of you who do rescuing work of some description, and many are volunteers, you have my vote for being among the most wonderful people God put on the earth.

I received one of your special editions, but it was lost in a computer crash.........Could you resend both of them?

They were very special to me, I wanted to write and tell you so, but my eyes keep getting so wet even yet that I don't get much expressed before the screen blurs beyond reason........It has been wonderful to see so many people, not just the US, pull together. I'm glad I've gotten to experience this, although I'm sorry it took something so terrible to make us put aside our 'sides'.

In the Waltons you can see how everyone pulled together during WWII, but all I've ever seen in my lifetime is the unrest fallout from the 60's. What a change this has been...............

Donna

KAREN'S COMMENT: By now you should have received your emails Donna. Hope they arrived. I was quite young at the time of the Vietnam War, but I remember the unrest from that only too well. Especially with regard to the conscription issue out here, which caused lots of unrest. Even churches became divided because of that. I'm glad to see that people are joining together too.
