WALTONS DIGEST 34-2001:

Hi everyone,

Firstly, I'm sorry about no digest last weekend, but we hit another very busy patch with James and his exams and him needing a fair amount of running around again.

I received a Mailbox from the Waltons Friendship Society during this week, just a small one, dedicated to those who died in the attack. Obviously Richard Thomas was in England on the day of the attack in USA, as he was appearing in Art. September 12th was the day organized by some of the Waltons fans in England to go to see the show, when the world was still in so much shock over what had happened in the US. Go they did though, because as Irene said if they hadn't gone it "would have been a victory over each of us for the terrorists."

Also taken from this Mailbox is a small piece called "The Warm, Wonderful World of The Waltons", and in it the writer, Sacha Nordsen has written words, in 1973, which I think would be felt very much today:

"Millions of Americans, including this writer [Nordsen], are pleased and proud that such a program has finally found success on American television. Hopefully it is a sign that Americans are looking for something better in their television viewing than excessive crime and violence. The warm, wonderful world of the Waltons is now your world too - enjoy it."

So here we are, nearly 30 years on, and still enjoying The Waltons. I think it's time to bring back shows like these. In today's society we need them more than ever!

Talk to you all next week. Goodnight everyone,

Karen.

Great Digest as always. I noticed that Robin attended an ABBA concert. I love ABBA myself and would love seeing them in concert sometime. It's great knowing I'm not the only Walton fan who also loves ABBA.

While the hurt from September 11th will linger a long time, it's great knowing that we have things to take refuge in such as "The Waltons".

I knew that Will Geer appeared on "Eight Is Enough" but I never knew he was on "The Love Boat". It seems I read that "Fantasy Island" was filmed on the same backlot as "The Waltons". Imagine, Tattoo saying ,"Da Plane, Boss. Da Plane" on the same lot on which "Good night, John-Boy" was said.

KAREN'S COMMENT: I had to laugh when you mentioned the two well known sayings of the shows. How true though! I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was on Fantasy Island as well, or at least some of the actors from the show. In the Love Boat episode he played a crusty old man with a real soft spot for a young stowaway.

Hi Karen:

Just a quick note to clear up the confusion about the movie mentioned below. This was actually a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie from 1998 called "Saint Maybe". It's from an Ann Tyler book. The lead character (Ian) was actually played by Thomas McCarthy (McCarthy later played a teacher on "Boston Public" who was fired for keeping secret another teacher's affair with a student).

It seems like a Richard Thomas role...but it's not.

Best Regards,

Mark

"Just wondering if you know the movie that I believe Richard Thomas starred in that was Christmas movie - I believe he played the part of a brother who blamed himself for his brothers death, and eventually apprenticed with a cabinetmaker and became a fine craftsman."

KAREN'S COMMENT: Thanks for this suggestion Mark. I've just had a look on the Internet Movie Database, and it sounds as if it could be right, but where does the Christmas bit come in? You're right though, it does sound like a RT role.

I know that Richard Thomas was in a Hallmark TV movie back in 1995 called "The Christmas Box" . I think that may be the movie. But I can't remember what it was about. It has been awhile since I have seen it.

Lisa =:-)

KAREN'S COMMENT: Yes this would have been the one I would have thought, but the scenario doesn't really fit. Great movie for Christmas though.

Grettings Karen, one and All!

How is everybody? After everyone's help, I just wanted to mention that I too have found the Waltons on TNN... not my favorite time, 11 AM (when I'm at work) I prefer 7 PM... but hey, it's better than nothing!!! Gotta get more blank tapes.. :) Geesh, now I really can't wait till my next day off!

Did anyone else see Richard Thomas on Entertainment? I saw him on last weekend for a split second... he was eating out in New York to benefit the Twin Towers Fund, and they had a small snippet of him saying that it's very important to get out again... I have heard stories that he may be coming back to England to ART??

Well, that's all from me for now... Take good care everyone, and have a great week!!

Love,Viv

KAREN'S COMMENT: Well he has had a season of Art in London but perhaps that's over by now.

Hi Karen and all

Just a note to say thanks for sending me Waltons updates.

Does anyone know if The Waltons are being shown in England?

It used to be on Channel 4 but I haven't seen it since. I am desperately missing Jim Bob and all the gang. I know we never saw the last seasons episodes so please can anyone help.

Also when The Waltons was last on, my video missed Erin's wedding episode. Does anyone know where I can get a copy?

On the note of the Richard Thomas movie, It sounds very familiar, I'm sure I know it, but can't put my finger on it.

To all our friends in the U.S I'm so sorry about the recent tragedy. I saw on the news the other day how the Fire dept were being told to scale down rescue operations. It must be terrible to have been there that day and still not know what has happened to your colleagues, even though the rescue teams have worked non stop to try and find them. It's traumatic for us to sit back and watch what happened, but to be at ground zero more or less since that day must be horrible. How these men and women will find peace I don't know.

God bless all involved and hope that peace will come to all soon.

From your friend Clara

KAREN'S COMMENT: Some of our British viewers might be able to help you with the information you need Clara, but I think that the show has finished in England. Unfortunately too, Erin's wedding episode is not one that readily available either. Stay tuned though....

Further...just stumbled on an email from Kerith, a fellow UK fan and she says that it's not on over there currently. BTW Kerith, good luck with your pending delivery. Let us know the good news when he or she decides to make an appearance. :-)
