| WALTONS DIGEST 37-98:
Hi everyone, Hope you're all well. It's been quite a restful week for me here this week, and I have spent it doing very little really. This coming week the schools are still on holidays here so it will be another lazy week, although we do have a few things planned already. Both boys must be quite tired too, because they really haven't wanted to do anything much either. We have had a week of shocking weather too, and our favorite holiday spot is currently under water for about the 3rd time during the 1990's. I guess it's a good thing that we didn't go away or we might have been stuck there. We also have no gas at the moment here in Victoria, as there was a big explosion and fire at the main plant on Friday. They asked for households not to use much gas on Friday, but things got worse and they've now made it that you can be charged and fined if you are found to be using any gas appliance. We've managed today, but we have gas cooking, hot water and heating, so we're having a few problems here. We're not even meant to be having hot showers!!!!! I'm off to buy an electrical cooking appliance tomorrow! Cars which run on gas are also having problems as they have rationing for that too, and prices have jumped quite a bit. Fortunately that doesn't effect us either. They don't seem to know how long we'll be without gas. We can only hope that it won't be too long before things get back to normal. It's a good thing we've still got electricity running, so I can still get on the computer. We do have a small heater that we can run too thank goodness. It's still quite chilly overnight. Well onto your letters. Talk to you all again next week. Have a great one. Goodnight, Karen.
P.S. A new member wrote and asked me if I knew where any Walton's recipes were available over the internet. I know that Shirley has sent a couple to the digest and so would be in the past issues, but does anyone know of any others? Please let me know if you can think of any. Maybe the forum has them from time to time? I can't keep up with what's on the forum. :-(( Dear Karen, Nancy asked about the bible verses at Mary Ellen's wedding in digest 36-98. The Old Testament scripture that Mary Ellen quotes to Curt in their wedding episode ("The Wedding", season 5, episode 7) is from the book of Ruth, chapter 1, verse 17 (Ruth 1:17). She quoted from the original King James version of the bible (not the New King James - they may not have changed any of the wording in the new version but I do not know for sure). If you look in your bible the book of Ruth is the eighth book in the Old Testament. It was an excellent choice since Ruth is a beautiful love story. The second question Nancy had concerned the episode "The Cloudburst" (season 5, episode 8). William Bryant played the part of Mr. Lyle Carter, the banker that John Boy goes to see about the loan. A man named John Carter played Mr. Shelby of the Interstate Land Company, who bought John Boy's Meadow from him and attempted to buy other land to strip mine. I hope this answers her questions. I would like to thank you for all the work that you do with the digest. It is so enjoyable to come in to work every Monday and have the digest to read. What a way to start the week. Thanks Karen and also to the other members of the digest. Brian, Michigan
KAREN'S COMMENT: Thank you for answering both questions Brian, and also for the compliments. I keep saying that it is you, the members, who keep the list going with your constant interest and letters, so once again thanks to all of you who make it happen each week. By the way, someone mentioned to me that they wondered how many members we had. The latest count is 245 people...hasn't it grown? Hi everyone. This is my first post. I am a lifetime Waltons fan. I started watching The Homecoming, then the entire series, and all the specials as a girl. It is the best show ever. I now watch it with my kids, including my oldest, Erin Elizabeth. In answer to Nancy's question, the quote from Mary Ellen's wedding is from the book of Ruth in the old testament. I used it as the first reading in my own wedding. I didn't realize until recently when I saw that episode in rerun why I had such a warm feeling for that verse.
Agnes Hi Karen and Waltons fans, I would like to welcome all the newbies to the list . To Nancy who was asking re Mary-Ellen's marriage vows to Kurt on the Mountain, the verse is from the bible book of Ruth. Its in the first chapter verse 16. I am going by memory as our VCR is out of action so I am not sure where Mary-Ellen begins. In verse 16 Ruth says to Naomi (her mother in law): "Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you. Where you go, I will go. Where you will lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people and your God my God. Goodnight everyone Kaz from Australia
In response to Nancy's question about where Mary Ellen's wedding vows came from: It's from the Book of Ruth in the Bible: Chapter 1, Verse 16. It's a wonderful tribute to love, especially if read in the context of Ruth. Those are the words Ruth said to Naomi, her mother-in-law after both had been widowed. Ruth chose to stay with her mother-in-law instead of abandoning Naomi, and both eventually were blessed. It's a very short book of the Bible, and great reading. My wife and I used the same verse as part of our wedding vows.
Thanks. -- Jim Barber Hi! I think I can answer Nancy's question about the Bible verse used at Mary Ellen's wedding to Curt. It comes from the Book of Ruth. It's what Ruth says to her mother in law, Naomi. I've heard it used at several weddings, including my sister in law's where I had to do that particular reading!
Kathy in Staten Island I will be back in contact with you later when I have more time but I did want to make a few comments. The TNN website is a little difficult to access ,and also when I try to access the Walton links the system goes down. It may be that I am still not computer adept just learning through trial and error even though most of it is simple. I believe the passage they were talking about is from the Old Testament book of Ruth-"whither thou goest I will go and where thou lodgest I will lodge. Thy people shall be my people and Thy God shall be my God". Donald F Nelson and Erin the cat
This is for Nancy who wanted to know the Old Testament verse that Mary Ellen quoted at the end of the marriage ceremony in The Wedding. Thanks for the question Nancy, I looked at my tape of The Wedding and found the quotation right near the end. I'd forgotten about it, and was so glad to be reminded of it that I've added it to the "notes" on The Wedding synopsis, currently on my site, but when Season 5 is complete, will be offered to Ralph for his site. It comes from the book of Ruth. Naomi has gone to another country, married and has two sons, now married. Sadly her husband and sons die, and Naomi intends to return to her own country. One of her daughters-in-law, Ruth, decides to go with her and says to her: "Intreat me not to leave thee, and return from following after thee; for whither thou goest I will go; and where thou lodgest I will lodge. Thy people shall be my people and thy God my God". Ruth chapter 1 verse 16 (in the King James translation). In case anyone is interested, if one knows a word or two from a Bible quotation, by looking that word up in a Concordance, which is in effect a "database" of words and their occurrence in the scriptures, one can find the verse. As an example, in Cruden's Concordance (an old but widely used one) "Lodgest" happens to occur just once and so gives us Ruth 1.16 immediately. By the way, during that interview I had with Judy Norton back in 1990, she told me that she wished she had a tape of The Wedding as it was one of her favorite episodes. Someone else will I hope come up with the answer to your other question Nancy. Best wishes, Arthur D

KAREN'S COMMENT: Well it seems that this particular verse is a very popular one for weddings, not just Walton weddings. :-) Thank you to everyone who took the time to answer this question for Nancy. You know, it always struck me as odd that Mary Ellen was not married in a church. She obviously was planning a church wedding when she was engaged to David, as the rehearsal was being held there. Am I just being silly? So sorry that I forgot to sign my letter last time. My name is Cindy from outside of Syracuse, NY. Things are moving along here. There are still a lot of trees down but everyone has their power back on. Ours was off for 3 days! Anyway, in answer to your question: What is a microburst? From my understanding it is a thunderstorm with tornado like winds that covers a vast area too large to be a tornado. In our case it began East of Rochester and ended near Albany, NY. Quite the storm in deed. Cindy KAREN'S COMMENT: I'm glad to hear that things are starting to get back to normal Cindy. Hope all the wedding preparations are still going well too.
Karen: How interesting it is that your enjoying some wonderful Spring weather, while we in Ohio, USA are looking at a dark, gray, rainy fall day. Snow will be falling here soon. However, I must admit, fall is my favorite time of the year. Growing up on a small family farm with 7 brothers and sisters (I was the oldest of the boys) the fall season brings back wonderful childhood memories as well as it reminds me of many of my favorite Waltons shows. While I grew up in the 70's, our families were similar and we shared similar experiences. You mentioned the reunion, when and where is that taking place? Best regards, Joe
KAREN'S COMMENT: Joe, the reunion is run by the International Waltons Fan Club and is being held on the weekend of October 24th-25th. You might find more current information about it on the Waltons Forum, on the <www.the-waltons.com> site, if not, then ask about it there. You'll probably get a quicker response. Good evening all, Tonight in "The Pony Cart", Martha Corrine tells about when Zeb and Henry's father Samuel came over from England in 1810. If I recall correctly, wasn't the first Walton in Virginia Rome Walton? This is mentioned in the first season in the episode, "The Love Story", and in (maybe the last season) "Founders Day". Wouldn't Rome have been Samuel's father or maybe grandfather? Maybe this is what comes of having so many different writers? Good night until next time, Robin KAREN'S COMMENT: Yes Rome Walton was definitely mentioned often as being the first Walton on the mountain. Any ideas where Samuel fits in?
Greetings and wishes of luck to all as we start headlong into the school and holiday season. My question is this: I think I remember a posting about how to send a card or a letter to Ellen Corby at the facility she is currently residing in. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!
KAREN'S COMMENT: Sorry I can't help you with an address for Ellen. I do know that if you send something to the museum or the fan clubs, that they do forward it for you. You do have to understand that people need to be very careful about giving out direct addresses.
Hi Karen and all the other digest members, I would like to thank everyone who wrote me (personally and in the digest) about raising children. All the advice we received was great and I took good notes so I can remember it all later. I can't tell from the mail whether parenting is hard or easy outright, but I can tell from the responses that it is definitely rewarding! My hope is that [we do a good enough job such that] it is as rewarding when the children are older as it is when they are little. I love kids and definitely look forward to experiencing life through his eyes. By the way, Karen, he's due in late January or early February. I'm pulling for early Feb - actually Feb 7 which would make his birthday be the same as his uncle's. I'm still more than happy to take advice if anything else occurs to anyone. "I now return you to your regularly-scheduled Walton digest." Goodnight, Larissa KAREN'S COMMENT: I hope you're feeling well Larissa. Another thought occurred to me too. I found it helpful to become friendly with, and keep in touch with others who have babies of a similar age to mine. Then when I had a bad time, I knew by hearing them talk that I wasn't the only one going through whatever was happening at that time. It's very reassuring to a new mum to know that problems are universal and that you're not alone.
I would like to know when the Waltons will be doing another movie. Goodnight everyone. Rona
KAREN'S COMMENT: Can't you just imagine Cindy saying to Ben "Old man" the way Grandma would say to Grandpa. They are terrific episodes. |
