| WALTONS DIGEST 39:
Hi everyone, Hope everyone is feeling really well. We have just started our 2 weeks break from school today before we head into term 4, which is usually quite a busy ones, what with finishing school and preparing for our long summer holiday as well as Christmas. There's not much news here, just the usual things. I haven't even had much of a chance to even get on to the Internet lately so it will be nice to have some time to do that over these holidays. We don't have any firm plans as Rod doesn't have a break, only myself and the boys. Sleeping in and relaxing sound very good to me. :-) It was nice to get a note from Rae who mentions that Richard Thomas will be starring in the new season's premiere of Touched By an Angel. We are in the first season over here of that show, and I don't know that it is going very well so we might not get the second season at all. Let me know how it goes and what he is like. I am a great admirer of Richard's work. Till next time, Karen.
I have put together a list of the semi-regular characters that appeared on The Waltons (excluding The Godseys and Baldwin sisters). Am I leaving anyone out?
KAREN'S COMMENT: I'm not sure who sent this as it had no name on it only the email address. Yes it's not bad for a start. What about the character played by A. Wilford Brimley, now known as Wilford Brimley. He popped up as a neighbor quite often. I was thinking you were looking mainly at the earlier seasons until I noticed J.D. Pickett. What about Rose and her grandchildren? Lisa Eilbacher popped up from time to time too as a classmate and friend of Mary Ellen. As an aside, did I once see in the credits a listing for the actress who played Gretel in The Sound of Music?
Hi Karen and Friends of The Waltons: I just finished reading Digest 38 and I enjoyed all of it as usual. I especially liked Marie's detailed account of her visit to Schuyler. Rae's comment about the very first episode and one of her favorite lines from the show reminded me of one of mine from an early episode. A lovestruck John Boy was standing outside the school house, quoting a poem he had written to Marsha Woolery, who was clueless about the meaning of the poem. Marsha said, "Do you drink a lot of wine, John Boy?" John Boy tried to explain the meaning of wine in his poem. Marsha hesitated a moment, then replied, "My daddy makes dandelion wine." I don't know why, but I think that is hilarious. Arthur's comments about English pronunciations were cute. On the Family Channel, they have been pronouncing Mary McDonough's name like 'McDonna'. Now, it is time for everyone with a homepage to join The Waltons Webring. Arthur has joined, and Rob and Kathy Crang have joined. You don't have to have a Waltons related page to be a part of the webring. If you are a fan of The Waltons, you can join. I know that lots of you have interesting homepages that we would all be interested in seeing. This is a good way for all of us to be connected on the web. The info can be found at: http://www.oocities.org/Heartland/Meadows/7604/webring.html If you have questions about joining the ring, just email me. I will be happy to help you. Brenda in West Virginia irby2@marshall.edu KAREN'S COMMENT: I am joining Brenda, so watch out for my application soon. Please all support Brenda's web ring as they are a great idea.
From Marie: Hope everyone enjoyed the eight hours of Waltons yesterday as much as I did! Never has eight hours passed so fast! Besides the four two-hour episodes, there were clips of Michael Learned, Ralph Waite, Richard Thomas, and Earl Hamner, talking about the old Christmas album (Ralph says "Don't worry, I don't sing on it but you can hear Will Geer ...", about a dog chasing a rooster on the set, about a Twilight Zone episode called "The Hunt" which Earl Hamner wrote, and so on. There were quite a few. Two announcements were made also. First, on September 16, the Family Channel will host a chat online with Earl Hamner at their web site at 9 p.m.! Second, starting on Monday, October 6, the Family Channel will be starting over and airing the episodes they have in order! About the room behind the door in the living room: The mysterious door has always intrigued me, too! In the Memorabilia Package (that you may order from Ralph's web site) is a floor plan of the house on the set (Stage 26). First, you have to remember that it was a moveable set. The walls and ceilings change from episode to episode depending on the camera angles. Your door in the living room is drawn on the floor plan as opening into the grandparents bedroom and marked "as closet door." But there are no closet walls drawn. If you could remember what episode you saw Grandma use this door, I would love to watch for that. There are two doors in the kitchen that I haven't seen them use either. On the floor plan, they don't go anywhere. But it's fun to watch for these things! About Melody Thomas: That episode was called The Seashore which aired on October 20, 1977. That's 20 years ago! Bet she's changed a bit. Favorite Quotes: That is a great quote! I can't think of another TV show on which the children stayed together for so long. Opie Taylor(Ron Howard) grew up on The Andy Griffith Show but didn't have six brothers and sisters to do it with. The First Season's Opening Scenes: Even the opening grew up! I like both versions! The Pronunciation of McDonough: Don't you just love the English language? The Family Channel advertisements (there's another word that's pronounced differently - ad VER tise ment & ad ver TISE ment) for the eight hour special pronounced Mary's name. I think it's Mick DONN nah. Like it ryhmes with Madonna. Waltons Actors on Quincy: Thanks! I'll watch for these episodes. I've seen Mary Jackson (Miss Emily) as a bride on Highway to Heaven. Goodnight everyone! Marie KAREN'S COMMENT: Hope you and your husband really enjoyed your break Marie. Judging from your letter in the last digest it sounded as though you had a ball. With regard to the room/door, could it be a downstairs bathroom for Grandma and Grandpa. Could it be the "water closet" do you suppose? :-)) I would have thought that they would need another bathroom downstairs because Grandma and Grandpa rarely went upstairs where the main bathroom was.
From Kim: Hi everyone, The Waltons haven't been broadcast on our Dutch TV-channel for a few weeks now and I really miss it. I sometimes look at the episodes that are broadcast on our French TV-channel but it isn't much fun because they are dubbed in French. It's much nicer to watch them in English of course. Last week they showed 'The Obstacle' and there's a part in that episode where Ben and Ike sing and dance together. It was the only part that wasn't dubbed and I'm glad because it was nice to hear some familiar voices for a while. It was pretty funny though, hearing Ike sing but I must admit that both Ben and Ike are pretty good singers. I noticed that some of you also enjoy 'The Man from Snowy River'. This is a show that I love also. I've been watching it from the very first episode on the BBC and they are currently re-broadcasting it. I don't know if you know 'Bugs' but this is another BBC series that's really worth seeing and it stars Australian actor Craig McLachlan. Still, like I said before, I miss the Waltons. About the room behind the door in the living room: I never noticed this door before so I had a look at a few episodes I have on tape. And you can see the door very clearly in the episode 'The First Edition'. I also have no idea where it leads to. Maybe it's some kind of closet or maybe it's just another door to Grandma and Grandpa's room. Now you've got me wondering. :-) Favorite Quotes: I think all episodes have some great lines. One of my favorite lines is in 'The First Edition' where all the children are out on Saturday night and Olivia says to John that the house is so empty without the children. And John answers: "Could be worse you know, some husbands go out on Saturday night and leave their wives alone." Olivia: "Why?" (very surprised) John: "I don't know...I never figured that out." and then they hug and kiss each other. But of course, the best line of all is 'Goodnight John-Boy, goodnight Jason,...' Goodnight everyone! KAREN'S COMMENT: I really miss the show too Kim. I wish Foxtel, our cable network, would put it back on for us. Don't they realize how much I'm suffering!
Also from Kim: About the book "The 25th Anniversary of The Waltons: A Book of Trivia - Over 2700 Questions" by Mark A. Jones which was published in 1997: Do you know if I can order this book or any book from the gift shop by mail? It sounds wonderful! I also enjoyed reading about your trip. It must have been great fun! Thanks for sharing. KAREN'S COMMENT: Actually Marie, I wondered this too. Perhaps it is available by mail order from the museum? It does sound great. Could you perhaps share just a couple of trivia questions with us Marie?
