WALTONS DIGEST 42-98:

Hi everyone,

It's great news for all 4 Waltons Digest members in Australia because, beginning today, we have The Waltons airing once again, every day. Its interesting that we've started with season 1 and with The Hunt too, just like TNN did. Well they say that good things come to those who wait, and in this case it's true. I've already written off to Foxtel to say thank you and received a very nice note back. Hopefully this might generate some more interest in The Waltons in Australia.

I was at Ralph's Waltons site today too, and noticed that he had a new Waltons offer. If you visit <http://www.the-waltons.com/photo.html> you can find out how to order The Waltons Family Photo Album, a package of "over 30 computer enhanced and printed photos of the cast and behind the scene views." Cost I thought, was very reasonable too...$12 for USA, $14 for Canada and $15 elsewhere. What a terrific idea Ralph, and just in time to add to your Christmas list

You can find out more information at the site address I mentioned. Please support this worthy cause. The money will be going towards helping to keep the official Waltons site up and running.

Well I'm off to watch The Waltons. :-)) Have a great week everyone and I'll talk to you again next week.

Goodnight everyone,

Karen.

To all fans and viewers of this super series I have, with great sadness, and even incredulity, to say that today, on the UK's Channel 4 I saw what might be the worst example of tv presentation I have yet encountered.

Not only has the broadcaster, for some time, interrupted the end title sequence with intrusive and unrelated Voice Overs, but now, for much of the showing of this week's episode (season 6's The Seashore) there was an intrusive "4T" thing inserted into the top left corner, which at times obscured the actors face..... But that is not all! The end title sequence is now completely obliterated by some live "person" in the studio blabbing away on the left of the screen about nothing to do with The Waltons, while the station's own (climbing title) version of the end credits scrolls up on the right.

This was an appalling example of bad taste and ill-judgment.

It is now quite obvious that Channel 4 despises The Waltons and all it stands for. I hope UK viewers will write in and complain - bitterly.

KAREN'S COMMENT: I sometimes wonder if they do know how annoying it is. Does this channel have an email address? Perhaps we could all send mail. :-)

Hi everyone,

This is my first time writing with a comment, but I so enjoy reading all your inputs/comments, I just wanted to say that SOMEHOW, I seemed to have missed some of the current episodes being shown. What a treat to see "new" ones. I now have the added pleasure of taping and watching them again at night!!!

Coming from a large family, five children, we DID have a table similar to the Waltons…a large pine table with benches on each side for us kids. As I remember back now, I think of the times we "carved" our names underneath the table, when we were just kids. I have no idea where that table is now, but whoever has it, has 5 names/initials under the it.!!

A question…do you think that we, as viewers of such a splendid show, look at that family, and find something, someone, who reminds us of our own childhood? I believe that we all want to hang onto something that was "warm and cozy" from our own youth, and the Waltons allows us to travel back in time, where for a brief moment, we see the special moments of our own youth...sometimes I almost smell the bread baking, the pies being made, and most importantly, our family, now long ago scattered across the U.S…sitting at the kitchen table all talking at once, telling our mom what went on during our "important" day

Thanks Karen for a wonderful newsletter, I enjoy it so very much!

Carol

KAREN'S COMMENT: Do you think that the owners of that table ever wonder about the initials today? You may be right about the reasons we like the show so much.

Now Reckless they said was fathered by Yancy Tucker's hound as the dog they had, had been visiting Yancy's hound when Yancy visited the Waltons. But when Reckless died they said they had had him for several years and they didn't know how old he was when he first came to live with the Waltons. So he had had a full life. These episodes once again seem to contradict one another. I think it is another case of the script writers not checking with one another

G W would have been a wonderful husband for Erin. I certainly liked the time he defended Erin's character against that bratty soldier who thought she was from the "country". But perhaps GW had been given a contract to do other things. He had just played a wonderful role in NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR a show that was on from 1968-1971 which starred Hayley Mills sister Juliet.

Does anybody know if David Doremus appeared in other things shortly after he was 'killed' on the show? This may explain why they wrote him out of the cast so to speak

Donald

KAREN'S COMMENT: I guess with so many writers you are bound to have small things wrong. I actually haven't seen David Doremus in anything other than The Waltons and Nanny and the Professor.

Dear Karen and fellow Waltons lovers

My name is Larry Young and I live in Iowa with my wife Dianne and we are very big fans of the Waltons. We watch them all the time and love the show's characters almost like they're part of our family.

Anyway, I thought I'd write to let everyone know that I have a Waltons Page now on my new homepage that will feature lots of different things about America's favorite family.....it also features a weekly Poll that I was hoping to get people to take....My page is located at:

<http://www.oocities.org/nashville/opry/8776>

Please feel free to drop by and visit and please sign my guest book and leave me any ideas of things you'd like to see added. I appreciate all your help and hope to hear from y'all soon....

So as they say each evenin': Goodnight Everybody.....

KAREN'S COMMENT: It's nice to have another Waltons site to add to our list. A poll each week should be fun. I stopped by and looked at the first one which was about the favorite Walton. Who won? We had a mini poll through the digest and Grandpa was the hands down favorite followed by John Boy.

Well, well we are back from the reunion in Schuyler! I had so much fun and will definitely go again. Earl Hamner Jr. apparently broke his foot on a fishing trip (I think he must've take some recipe!) and was not able to travel. It was disappointing but we still had fun! Anyhow, I did not like the crowded museum but preferred the intimacy of the banquet. I recommend going to the museum another day and just attending the banquet. We were able to get autographs at the banquet and personal pictures as well.

Mary McDonough is a doll! She brought her daughter Sydnee who was also signing autographs! Kami is more beautiful in real life with her long red hair...very intelligent. Jon Walmsey and Toni Harrison sang "Dream" to Joe & I for our honeymoon. Needless to say I was glowing. Boone Walton was very gracious to sign his autograph.

I would definitely like to meet with more Walton's fans off this computer. Everyone was so warm and fun to talk with. There were all ages of people there and it was a lot of fun. I will have to write more later! Sorry I am carrying on!

By the way, Kami said that Reckless was always a girl!

Cindy

KAREN'S COMMENT: I had heard some time ago that Earl Hamner had broken his foot. It must be particularly bad if he is still not right. What a shame he couldn't make it.

Hi Karen & Digest members,

I liked the idea from Kaz about talking about the Walton home decor. The gleaming white kitchen cabinets are my favorite and if I could recreate them for myself I would. I think I would like the rustic stove and old coffee pot too as long as I'm dreaming.

Karen, I did some searching on the 'net for the 25 years of Waltons that Donald mentioned and the only thing I came up with was a documentary that the Public Broadcasting Service(PBS) made and soon will be airing. The announcement I read suggests viewers should contact their local affiliate to request an airing of the documentary. It also lists a contact person at a Virginia PBS that will sell a director's cut edition of this film on VHS, (no price given) tracey_Jewel@wvpt.pbs.org I'm thinking this would make a wonderful Christmas gift...

Thank you for keeping the digest going! :-) Mary

KAREN'S COMMENT: The documentary is one which we have mentioned several times Mary. It's called "A Walton Legacy" and it is very good. Costs $29.95 I think. I'm going to add this information to my site as I get a lot of queries about it. Actually another member wrote about a comment I had made last week, about Jon Walmsley commenting that he enjoyed working with Ron Howard on The Gift and wondered where I had heard this. At the end of this video, there are some further interviews with some of the actors, and he made this comment here. Kami and Mary both mentioned The Burnout, and Kami also mentioned The Changeling as quite a weird one for her character.

Hi Karen and Walton Family,

I recall some time ago, that someone was asking what Little House on the Prairie episode that Tony Becker (Drew) appeared in. It was the one called "Craftsman".

In answer to Nancy's question as to what shows are planned for the Thanksgiving Marathon for November 26th:

  • The Thanksgiving Story
  • The Burnout
  • The Wedding
  • The Grandchild
  • A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion
  • The Empty Nest
  • The Ordeal (part I and part II)

I believe there are two episodes that TNN has not shown and they are:

  • The Easter Story
  • The Best Christmas

Now the episode that the family channel never showed called "The Changeling" is to be shown on November 24th. (based on TNN listings).

Good night dear friends.

Hope you all have/had a Safe and Happy Halloween

Shirley

KAREN'S COMMENT: I'm not sure if I have that LHOTP episode or not. I'll have to have a look. It sounds like a great lineup for Thanksgiving Day, and very appropriate episodes too. Is that a definite date for the airing of The Changeling? A member actually wrote this week to ask if I knew. There are a few who only need this one episode to complete their collections. Wouldn't it be awful if there was a power problem that day?!

Hello everyone,

Hope you are all doing well. There were some good points raised this week In response to Kaz from Australia , I like your idea of finding out what others may have adopted from the show for their own homes or would like to, in my case!

Apart from the porch, which has to be number one for me I think, I would have to agree that the table and benches would be great, mind you I would have to move house to fit it in!

The was one item I just had to have when I had my first baby (I have 2 children) and that was a rocking chair . It was quite hard to get one at the time (1990) a lot of places didn't seem to stock them or had sold out but I managed to get in the end.

There was many a night when I was reminded of the episode where John and Olivia look after a baby and they remember back to staying up half the night when all their children were babies and rocking them to sleep in the chair ! I love that one.

Can anyone tell me if the following reunions have been shown on British TV because if so I must have missed them:

  • A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion (11/21/93)
  • A Walton Wedding (2/12/95)

I've seen the Easter one which has been shown on Satellite a number of times recently but not having satellite myself I don't know what's gone before.

Are there likely to be anymore made, does anyone know ?

Finally, I hope all of you who went to the reunion had a brilliant time. One day I would dearly love to go, but for now, if one of you gets the chance I would love to know if you could tell us all about the whole weekend.

Goodnight everybody

Baz (short for Barbara)

KAREN'S COMMENT: Hi Baz. Personally I'd love a porch like that too, and a swing, and the nice nights to watch the stars and relax.

Hi Karen--just wanted to say thanks for your welcome letter. I did get my 1st digest and I'm looking forward to more! Like you, I'm a huge fan of "The Waltons"! I grew up watching it and always dreamed of having a nice big family like they did. The show promotes such wonderful family values in what I think is a very real, non-syrupy sort of way. I currently watch the show on "The Nashville Network" on cable, and I'm glad to find this group of fellow fans.

Well, thanks again-Kathy

KAREN'S COMMENT: Thought I'd just add this as your first contribution Kathy, hopefully the first of many more. Welcome.

Hi, Karen,

Good news for Australian Waltons fans! From November 1, Foxtel is showing the WALTONS every day on Fox 8 (Channel 8): Mondays to Fridays it's on from 6.00 - 7.00 am; Saturdays and Sundays it's on from 7.00 - 8.00 am.

Does anyone know when A WALTON EASTER is going to be shown on Australian TV? It's the only show I haven't taped!

I enjoy your digests, Karen! Keep them coming.

Warm wishes,

Trisha

KAREN'S COMMENT: Fantastic news isn't it? By the way we now have FOUR Australian members. Maybe it will become more popular again now it will be airing. I still haven't heard a word about A Walton Easter out here. Should we bombard the networks? What about asking Foxtel?

Hi Everyone,

I'm sure everyone will be sending you the same thing, oh well. If you get lots, just delete mine. I'm sending you the schedule for what TNN will be showing on Thanksgiving day. The shows start at 1pm EST and end at 3am EST Friday morning. Note that they are showing some of these as two-part regular episodes during the normal daytime showings, so if you're going to be strapped for tape space and won't be home to change a tape, then you can pick and choose which ones to record.

Also, thanks to the people who replied about the teasers. I figured TNN was not cutting them out but it's nice to know that for sure. If I had ever noticed this before I probably just thought I was losing my mind or missing them. This is the first time I've recorded the shows so it's the first time I've been able to go back and notice things like this.

About which part of the Waltons' house I'd like to incorporate into my own: First, definitely the front porch. It could overlook the mountains or the ocean I'm not picky. :) And the more sides of the house it goes around the better! Second, the large, old kitchen - preferably brick. And third, the kitchen table with bench seats (my husband thinks I'm nuts!), the old icebox, and (the name of it just left me) the kitchen hutch with the hardware in it like the flour sifter. White metal, but a wooden one like they've got would be ok too. I just love those!

I was definitely born in the wrong half of this century.

Goodnight, Larissa

The Walton family continues adjusting to Elizabeth's loss of the use of her legs from the accident. They learn to triumph in the face of adversity and "The Ordeal" has an uplifting conclusion.

KAREN'S COMMENT: Thanks for sending this schedule Larissa. You know, much as I like the bench seats, I don't know about sitting there for a long time with no back on my seat.

Hi, Everyone

I just got my digest. Here in Texas it is in the high 70's and I just finished watching the Waltons. I not for sure what the title was, but it is the one where Olivia is going through the change. I miss all of the characters. Families do not spend time like that any more. I wish my family was so close knit. Even though they each have their own difficulties like Olivia, the family rallied around her.

Karen please keep up the good work.

Good night all Rona

KAREN'S COMMENT: Just thinking about it again, I think what I would have liked in my home as I was growing up was my Grandparents living with us. I really like the way Grandma and Grandpa were always made to feel as if they were always needed and wanted. I always wanted a barn too....I don't really know why, but it sounds nice and countryish.

From Karen (yes me!!!)

Does anyone know much about John Crawford (Sheriff)? I had someone write me a lovely story about him during the week and asked if I knew what he was doing and if he was still acting. I went to have a look at the Internet Movie Database though and had problems getting through. We currently have problems with our ISP and things are on a real go-slow. Anyway could you let me know if you come across anything please, and I'll pass it on. Thanks.

Dear Karen and other fans of The Waltons,

It has been awhile since I have posted anything to the digest. Since school started a couple of months ago, I have been very busy. I did take the time to go to the reunion in Schuyler last weekend, though, and I am so glad I did. It was such an honor to meet the cast members who were there - Jon Walmsley, Lisa Harrison, Morgan Woodward, Kami Cotler, and Mary McDonough.

All of them looked great, and they were all so friendly and seemed to take a personal interest in each of us in spite of the long line of people waiting to get autographs. Along with the cast members, I got to meet some of Earl Hamner's actual family members, including his sisters Marion and Audrey, his brother James, his nephew Bo Hamner, and his Aunt Frances Payne. I immediately recognized her as the sweet and knowledgeable tour guide who took us through the museum last summer when we were there. She didn't tell us then that she was Earl Hamner's aunt! James Hamner entertained us by playing several old hymns on the piano at the museum. Marion recognized my name and congratulated my daughter on winning the poetry contest. All of them were great!

I got to meet Dorothy P. very briefly and also Alex and Marca from The Netherlands. Alex gave me little souvenir key chain from Holland shaped like a wooden shoe. I wish I had brought him one of my "Country Roads...take me home" keychains.

The weather was perfect and the drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains was beautiful. I had never been there in the fall before.

My only disappointments were not being able to go to the banquet, and not getting to meet Earl Hamner. I took a lot of pictures, and have added some to my Waltons webpage. Go to: <http://web.mountain.net/~waltons> and click on the button that says Reunion.

KAREN'S COMMENT: From what I've heard everyone had a fantastic time. It really is a tribute to a great show that so many people came such a long way to attend.
