WALTONS DIGEST 8-98:

Hi everyone,

Well I haven't a lot to tell you this week. It's been both hot and cold weather wise. It would have passed for mid summer on Wednesday and Thursday, but today is quite chilly. You just don't know where you are!

If you have visited my site recently you will know that I've added a couple of things but some of it is still not working properly. I've been having a problem uploading many of the files and it's a real nuisance. Nothing major has been added so if you can't notice many differences don't worry! I'll let you know when other things are up and running.

Speaking of my page, I have had a few requests recently from people who have lost the URL for the past digests archives. I think there is a link to it from Ralph's page under new additions if all else fails but here it is again:

Arthur also wrote during the week and told me that "It isn't probably worth mentioning it, but, as an interim measure, I've put incomplete Season synopses on my Waltons miscellany site." Well Arthur, hope you don't mind, but I did mention it because I, along with others, have been waiting for them to be done and a few of them is better than none at all!!!! Thank you for putting them there for us to read and enjoy. I'm sure we all appreciate just how much time it takes you to do one and we will continue to be patient.

Well that's about it for this week. Goodnight everyone,

Karen.

Good evening Karen and all.....

I have to tell you about my find! My husband Doug, three of my children and I were wandering through a local antique mall this morning, and I came across a Walton's board game from 1974. I hesitated at first because I thought it unlikely that all the pieces would be there, but Doug told me to go ahead and buy it. I spent $12 on it, and was pleasantly surprised to find all the cards there and the board in almost mint condition. The box top is torn at two corners, but is not in bad shape at all. There is even an original 1974 price tag on it from Gold Circle for $2.25. Can anyone tell me if I was taken or is $12.00 a fair price? This antique mall is one of the largest in our state (Ohio), and it was the only Walton's piece that any of us spotted. We love to go "antiqueing", and this was the first time I've seen anything from the series.

Until next time, goodnight everybody!

Robin

KAREN'S COMMENT: As I said to you Robin, I think you were very lucky. I couldn't find a price for the game, but I would have to say that I think you got a bargain. Any ideas on what it's worth?

In response to some of the digest letters: Collectible Toy shows are good places to find Waltons items. I have a lot of them! but you need to be patient and search! The Toy Shop is a good resource (magazine) where people advertise their items for sale. Used book stores, flea markets, antique stores are also good places to check out. Check out EbAY The auction site and type in Waltons.

Also, I really do not look for "errors" when watching The Waltons. I just enjoy the show, but it does seem interesting to find these tidbits.

Thanks,

Cindy

KAREN'S COMMENT: Cindy do you have an URL for the auction site you mention?

I have a question, please..... What was the reason for Grandpa's death? And which is the first show to deal with it? Thanks!

Nikki in Arkansas

KAREN'S COMMENT: Hi Nikki. Will Geer, who played Grandpa Walton, died just before filming started for the seventh season. He died in 1978 of a heart attack I think. The first show of season 7 "The Empty Nest" dealt with Grandpa's death and there was a tribute at the end of that show. You can also see scenes from this show in A Decade of the Waltons.

Hi fellow Walton fans,

I saw a Walton lunch box at an antique show and hesitated to buy it because it cost $150.00. I seemed interested enough and the man lowered the price by $50.00. I thought I still needed time to think so I walked away only to return later to find it had been sold. I've been kicking myself ever since. I also found a shop that had previously sold 2 copies of the Waltons books a few days before I stopped by. I have my sister in Arkansas looking at all the used book stores in her area. I tried Garage Sales today no luck. I'm going on vacation the end of this month you better believe I'll be driving my husband crazy stopping at all the shops along the way. This has become a great hobby, my children are helping me out. My 6 year old loves to watch the Hunt, the video has been well worth the money. Have a great week!

Mary

KAREN'S COMMENT: I must say that $150 seems a bit steep for a lunch box. Is that the going rate? Did it have the thermos flask too? I don't know that I would have bought it for that price Mary. Perhaps someone else on the list bought it though!

Hello to All,

The person who asked about Ellen Corby's personal life reminded me of a comment that I heard in the Walton's Mountain Museum film presentation. (I have not been there for any special occasions, so this is just the general film they show to all their visitors.) If I remember correctly, in it Jon Walmsley said that he did not know his grandmother and that Ellen Corby did not have any grandchildren - so they had a special friendship and filled these spaces in the other's life. It was a very heartwarming comment and I think of it every time I see them at the piano together.
Bye!

Larissa

KAREN'S COMMENT: That's a lovely story Larissa. While I was researching for my page I came across a small piece that said while Ellen Corby was in hospital and quite ill from her stroke, that Jon Walmsley used to go and sit with her each day and play his guitar to her. They do seem to have been very close.

Hi Karen and all on the list.

I live in Columbia, South Carolina and our local newspaper has a Question and Answer column where people write and ask all sorts of things and get answers. Often, people write to get celebrity addresses. Today, someone wrote and asked for Richard Thomas's address. I don't know if it has ever been posted on this digest before, or if any of the other subscribers have it or want it, but I thought I'd post it here in case someone does want to drop "John-boy" a note.

Richard Thomas

I enjoy the digest and look forward to mine eagerly each week. Keep up the good work!

Marty Matthews

KAREN'S COMMENT: Thank you for the address Marty. Lots of people write to me for addresses for Waltons actors so it will be nice to have at least one to pass on.

Hi Karen!

I just wanted to let you know that me and my 3 year old like to watch Columbo on Monday's and Thursday's and we have noticed a lot of Walton's characters showing up there. A few weeks ago Will Geer played a doctor. Yancy was a guy drinking at a bar trying to talk to Columbo. His part was short. Every time he tried to talk Columbo interrupted him to listen to the TV and then he left. And yesterday I saw Jenny, John-Boy's girlfriend in The Love Story. I hardly ever see anyone from the Walton's so I was very excited when I spotted them. Now I'm keeping a closer eye out to see if anyone else from the show pops up.

KAREN'S COMMENT: Well spotted! Amazing who pops up on these older shows.
