WALTONS DIGEST 9-98:

Hi everyone,

Well it's Friday here and I thought that I'd get the Digest out very early this week. There's been a lot of mail coming in which is great. The other reason that I'm early is because I gave you the wrong email address for Shirley, so to any of you who emailed her about the game she has for sale, my apologies for your frustration!

Just on that note. I'm perfectly happy to let the digest members know if you have some memorabilia of The Waltons to sell. Just send me the details and I'll add it to the next digest. Please add your email address to the message though, so that people can email you directly with their offers or queries.

I am pleased to say that any additions to my page, including my Waltons sound files, are now working properly. They did not upload properly in the first place and caused me no end of frustrations! I am currently compiling my trivia quiz page, which I intend (hope to find the time?) to change at regular intervals. There will be a page of questions, and each question will lead to another page which has a fairly detailed answer, perhaps giving a bit of background information about that show or giving the question and answer some context. For example, one question is about The Quilting. I will then go on to explain what a quilting is as well as including the answers to the question about that show. If any of you have any trivia questions that you would like me to add, please feel free to send them, with the answer, but a fairly detailed answer please if it is needed. Hope that's clear. I am happy to acknowledge that you sent me that question. Please put "trivia quiz" in the subject box at the top of your email.

The other thing is that I'm having quite a few digests returned each week. I'm not sure whether these people are just having trouble with their email service or whether they have closed their account. Those who have email accounts with hotmail or one of those services, often just finish using their account too, and I will just keep sending things even if they aren't reading it. Usually if a mailing is returned 3 times, I just take you off the list.

To help me to find out who is on the list, and wishes to remain there, I wondered if we might do a Waltons poll of the digest members. If every member (who wishes to remain a member) could just email me and nominate one Waltons character who is their favourite, I will compile a list and add it to the site. This way, if you reply, I will know that you're still happy to be on the list. I will give everyone until the end of March to reply and I will just tick you off the list as your email comes in. I will also know who is still getting their mailings from me and I can delete anyone who isn't.

If you could just send me an email with "Walton Poll" in the subject heading, and just one name in the letter part, that is quite sufficient. I can take it from there. You do not have to write a letter, unless you want to, but do just nominate ONE character only please.

Well I'll hand it over to you now. Talk to you all again next weekend. Keep the letters coming in.

Goodnight everyone,

Karen.

Hi Karen and Waltons Mailing List Members,

This is my fist message to the list, and I hope one of many. I have grown up with the Waltons TV Series and I thank God every day for it.

Well I wanted to ask you guys, if you could give me some background info on the Walton Specials 1982-1997.

Also would any of you know if there is going to be a new Walton's Movie out? Any info would be great! I know they did one last year. A Walton Easter right?

Lastly I read on the last Waltons digest about some kind of new Little House movie??

What's this all about? I loved the TV series (when it was on NBC) and any info on this would be great if someone could give me. Also what episode of "Promised Land" did Michael Learned guest star in?

Thanks,

John W.

KAREN'S COMMENT: If you are interested in learning about the specials, have a look on my site, under "Waltons episodes". You will find the story lines to the specials listed there. We are all still waiting for further updates on the next Walton Special. Apparently a Little House on the Prairie movie has been commissioned and there is talk of Richard Thomas playing the Michael Landon role of "Pa". I love that series too. Can anyone help with the Michael Learned question please? I haven't seen the series yet.

In reference to the Ebay auction site, this is the URL:

http://pages.ebay.com/aw/index.html

Also, re. Waltons collectibles. Check out your library or the book stores for information re. Television Collectibles/Memorabilia. You will want to look for the most current reference books for up-to-date prices. However, I too agree that $100 is a bit steep for The Waltons lunch box. I paid $45.00 for mine with a thermos! Please be careful and do not get taken!!!

Cindy

KAREN'S COMMENT: Thanks for the ebay auction URL. I've checked back a few times this week and there's been more Waltons things added. Remember to do your search with both "Walton" and "Waltons". Their prices seem to be fairly reasonable. If anyone is buying from this auction site, could you please let us all know if you have been satisfied, or if you have had any problems.

The other thing was that when I visited, they had some pictures of some of the Waltons dolls. Can anyone with a John Boy and Mary Ellen doll in a box confirm whether the Mary Ellen doll is actually known as "Ellen" as one of pictures seems to suggest? I don't think the makers of the dolls were Waltons fans either, otherwise they would know that the "MA and PA" dolls should be known as "Mummy and Daddy"!

I thought I would let you and those who get the digest know that I have compiled several of "The Waltons" themes and would be happy to send some or all to you on request.

Here's what I have:

  • The Opening & Closing Themes for the 2nd Season (1973-1974)
  • The Opening & Closing Themes for the 5th Season (1976-1977)
  • The Opening & Closing Themes for the 6th Season (1977-1978)
  • The Opening Theme used both for the 7th & 8th Seasons (78-79 & 79-80)

Finally, I have the closing theme used for the 8th season finale. The original 2-hour episode was called "A Decade of The Waltons". When it was filmed, it was unsure as to whether "The Waltons" was going to return for a 9th season, so this episode was shot with the idea in mind that it might just be the final episode of the series. However, as most of us probably know, "The Waltons" did return for a 9th season and almost a 10th, but a 10th was never to be.

By the way, the themes are in RealAudio format. If you don't have the RealAudio player, you can download one for free from http://www.real.com.

Thanks,

Michael

KAREN'S COMMENT: Thank you for your kind offer Michael. Do the themes differ very much from season to season?

From Dot P CANADA

Hi everybody:

I finally saw the episode of Mother's Day on Walton's Mountain. I certainly enjoyed it and like Peggy Rea said, she only watched the Waltons after she decided if you wanted to cry or not. I cried.

There has been much discussion about Mary Ellen and her children last year in the Digest and on the forum.

I just listened and copied down the explanation of whether Mary Ellen could or could not have any more children.

Scene is in hospital after she had the accident, trying to avoid hitting the deer on the road. Mary Ellen is laying in bed, looking a the Locket that Jonesy had given her.

Doctor walks in.

Doc: Good morning Mary Ellen. How do you feel?

ME: Restless! and I'm not thrilled with my scar.

Doc: Hum! What's wrong with it?

ME: For one thing it is longer then I expected. Did you go exploring, after you took out my spleen?

Doc: Mary Ellen , now that you are stronger. I think you should know, we had to patch you up in more then one place.

ME: But I am okay now? Doctor sits down.

Doc: Not entirely, you see, during the surgery we found bleeding in the pelvic region. We discovered a tear in the uterus.

ME: How can that be the uterus is so protected?

Doc: Not against car accidents any puncture wounds. You were very luck the bladder and left kidney was not damaged.

ME: What did you do?

Doc: We sewed up the tear but as a medical student you must recognize the consequences, and if you become pregnant, there is considerable risk. That as the baby grows, the seam would not expand with the rest of the womb, and it could rupture, then I don't know if baby or you could be saved. It was rare bad luck. I am sorry.

ME: Isn't there a slight possibility I could have a full term pregnancy, that the stitches would hold.?

Doc: I can't imagine you or your husband would wanting to take that risk.

ME: Does Jonesy know?

Doc: I thought you'd want to find your own way to break that news.

ME: He so wanted a large family . Lots of brothers and sisters for John Curtis.

Doc: Mary Ellen is there anything I can do for you? Mary Ellen nods her head no. End of Scene.

So maybe this explains the other children we see in later episodes belonging to Mary Ellen Maybe she healed better then expected and also maybe they took the chance. It certainly did not rule out that she could not get pregnant like a lot have said. They may have prayed about it.

Just what I took out of it. After hearing so much about the question. What do the rest of the members think. I won't guarantee I got the scene exactly right, but I did my best.

Regards to all,

DotP

KAREN'S COMMENT: Thanks for the transcript Dot. Yes the way it is written is exactly as I remember it and I've seen this one several times. Perhaps she did heal better than expected. Maybe she had lots of bed rest during pregnancy, which helped. Who knows. :-)

By the way Dot, how are you now? Hope everything is OK with your back once again.

Hi, Karen!

I'm a new subscriber to the Walton's Digest, and am learning lots of interesting tidbits of information. To Robin who wondered whether $12 was too much to pay for a Waltons board game--I think she got a great deal. I saw a board game in an antiques mall in Franklin, TN, several years ago for $10--seemed to have all the pieces and was in good condition. I deserve a swift kick in the behind for not buying it then--I've never seen another one since, but I keep looking.

I recently saw John "Ep Bridges" Crawford in an old episode of "Eight is Enough." He played Tom Bradford's new boss when he temporarily worked for another newspaper. Sheriff Bridges is one of my favorite "occasional" characters from the series. Another old show that seemed to have several actors from the show is "Quincy." I've spotted the actors who portrayed Miss Emily Baldwin and Dr. Willard on there in the past.

Reading the Digest has been a lot of fun--I look forward to future issues!

Good night, Karen!

Carolyn in Tennessee

KAREN'S COMMENT: Hi Carolyn. "Eight is Enough" was another favourite of mine when I was growing up, but I never noticed John Crawford in it. I must pay more attention. There was one episode though, when Tom is watching the TV and, although we don't see the TV screen, we DO hear the theme from "The Waltons". I can't remember which season it was in, but I think it might have been after Tom and Abby had married.

Dear fans,
I have been a fan "natic" about the Walton's for only about a month now while taping and watching from Family Channel. Sunday morning our pastor's sermon was on "the perfect family" of God. But when he said that the family was headed by a wise father and an older brother that all the children come to for help and advice, that is not what came to my mind!

Can you tell me if any of Olivia Walton's siblings or parents are mentioned or appear in any episodes? Or do we assume that she came from "the far country" to marry and never saw her own parents family?

I also find it interesting that the actress must be proud to be known as MISS Michael L. in the credits, when the part is definitely a Mrs. role. Has she remained Miss to this day?

Edwin Martin

KAREN'S COMMENT: You never know Edwin...maybe your pastor is also a Waltons fanatic! Yes we do have some references to Olivia's family. She has an Aunt Kate who appears when Olivia discovers she has TB and some brothers are mentioned at times. Any more than that, and can anyone recall the episodes?

KAREN: I had an email the other day about someone interested in what became of the cars from the series. Does anyone have any information about the cars which were used in the series? I'm not a car person, and wouldn't know one make from the other, although I do love the old cars. However that person mentioned that they were "model A's". He also says that someone in his car club bought Jim Bob's roadster.
