| WALTONS DIGEST 9-99:
Hi Waltons Friends, I hope you've all had another great week full of Waltons watching. Have you seen The Sinner yet, in this new lot of airing? I wonder if anyone picked up the mistake? Don't forget to drop me a line if you think you noticed it. One thing about season 1. I really like the opening credits for this season and would love to know why they made the change in season 2, however the end credits really are a little hard to read I've found. They seemed to only have 2 screens of acting credits and the names are sometimes lost against the background. Perhaps this was the reason for the changes. Sad news over here for Australian viewers is that Foxtel have told me that the seasons they are currently showing are the only ones that they have the rights to. I'm a bit disappointed because I'm beginning to think that I'll never see the later episodes again. :-(( If you're one of our Australian members, why don't you visit the Foxtel Interactive and let them know that you enjoy The Waltons too. They said they'd pass on my request to programming and if they get more queries about it, then something might happen. You never know. Well that's really about it from me for this week. Talk to you all again next week. Goodnight everyone,
Karen.
>> you failed to mention the French girl he fell in love with while in the service. If I think of her name I'll let you know....My wife Dianne says it was Simone.>> Her name was indeed Simone, though I forget the name of the episode. It was on not too long ago. I thought it was one of the more poignant endings through the series when John-Boy spoke about not returning to Paris until the 1950's and finding both Simone and her bookstore gone, then saying that he never knew for sure what happened to her. Still loving the digests Karen! Maggy Hello Karen, Your wife has a very good memory Larry. The episode was "The Premonition" which was broadcast on December 25, 1980. Anita Jodelsohn played a French girl by the name of Simone Berringer who John-Boy fell in love with and even considered taking his discharge from the Army in Paris and remaining there with her. This was the same episode in which Cindy is frightened by nightmare premonitions about Ben who is still fighting in the South Pacific. Simone was concerned about land mine that children were tripping over and getting killed and she had been trying to get more publicity about the problem. She met John-Boy at the Stars and Stripes office while she was in there tying to get someone to write an article about the problem. John-Boy initially refused but eventually did investigate and write an article. Last week while I was channel surfing I stopped to watch an old Star Trek episode. It was "The Trouble With Tribbles" and I had not seen it in such a long time that I had forgotten that William Schallert, who played Stanley Perkins, played the prominent role of Mr. Barris in this episode. Also the following from digest 8-99 about the blooper in The Lumberjack. I did not notice it but went back to the video tape and he is right. About 36 minutes into the show (including the commercials) is where they do go into the office. Mike is right about the cars. Although I can not tell the exact years they are from the 1960's. I bet it was just some stock footage that they grabbed to fill in the spot and never actually filmed it themselves. That scene of the outside of the government building reminds me of old Hawaii Five-O episodes. Nice catch Mike! Talk to you all later. Brian KAREN'S COMMENT: Thank you to both Maggy and Brian for the confirmation of Simone as being another of John Boy's love interests. I'll add that to the answer in a couple of weeks. I always miss the car bloopers! Someone said there was one in The Conflict, but I didn't see that one either.
<< If anyone out there knows the whereabouts of the Model 'A' s used on the show, give me a holler. I do know where JimBobs car is. A fellow club member bought it from the studio.>> John ought to get with his friend and drive Jim Bob's car to the next Walton reunion! Well, maybe he should tow it instead! LOL. Wouldn't it be neat to see all the old hunkers again....cars I mean....... Cindy KAREN'S COMMENT: What a fantastic idea Cindy! Hopefully though the cars still run and wouldn't need to be towed. :-))
Hi everyone, I am so sad that the TNN series of the Waltons has come to the end of the series and is starting over. I just want it to go on and on, only forward. I feel like I have lost that quiet place I came to everyday after work, that represents the life I want to live and a different time. I wonder how many of us would like to pack our bags and go create a Waltons Mountain type world together. Guess it can't be done huh. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how many specials there have been since the last show of the last season? Can all of them be ordered? Thanks. Goodnight everyone. Susan KAREN'S COMMENT: The later specials are: A Wedding on Waltons Mountain, Mothers Day on Waltons Mountain, A Day of Thanks on Waltons Mountain (all 1982), then A Waltons Thanksgiving Reunion (1993), A Walton Wedding (1995) and A Walton's Easter (1997). As far as I'm aware, only A Day of Thanks on Waltons Mountain is available on video. These are just off the top of my head and I think the dates and titles are correct but they could be out a little.
Speaking about the last show, can someone tell me what happens in it please? I haven't seen it for ages but the summary I have read recently reminded me of an episode in season 1. Are they similar? >>KAREN'S COMMENT: Good question Beth, and I've got another one that I'm confused about. In "The Dust Bowl Cousins" Cora is cousin to John as well. John tells her husband that the Walton land was shared equally amongst the children. I take it to mean among Zeb and his brothers and sisters. Cora's husband says "I wonder what happened to Cora's Daddy's share?" Who then is Cora's Daddy? His name was Matthew I think, but was he another of Zeb's brothers?>> I have no clue. I don't know the Walton side that well. But In "The Pearls," Corabeth says that her Aunt Cordelia was her father's only sister. Anyone know all of Zeb's siblings? Also, Dawn from the Forum and I have created a website about our favourite couple, the Godseys. It's at: http://www.oocities.org/TelevisionCity/Lot/5280/index.html Please tell us what you think of it! -Beth KAREN'S COMMENT: Actually Beth, I was reading "Trouble on the Mountain" this morning, which is based on The Typewriter. As Grandpa is looking through the trunk for a typewritten letter he comments that there is a picture of Amy, who died of scarlet fever, and there are medals won by his brother Matthew during the war. I need to go back and check whether this is actually in the episode but I think it might be. I'll have a look at the page. Fantastic to have a site about the Godsey's. They were a wonderful couple of characters.
Hi Karen, thanks for the digests - it's been great getting them and nice to hear about aspects of the show that other members have picked up on that I wouldn't have thought about probably! Talking of which - can anyone tell me which episode featured Corabeth opening a ballet school shortly and then shortly afterwards she had some sort of breakdown? I can't remember where this came in the time scale of things? It must have been after the Depression? Thanks too to everyone with info about the museum and the cruise - I am going to look up the details straight away! I'd be interested to hear from anyone who is thinking of booking - I heard that they have booked several of the actors already. In the last digest Courtney passed on info about her visit to the museum - thanks so much - and also to Brenda - it's all really useful. I hope to be going in the Summer or possibly in October - I have time off work then but can't make my mind up quite when to go - but it'll be a dream come true! I am really envious of everyone who has been there already! Every time I watch the Waltons it's so sunny ! It's still pretty cold here in London and it just drizzled the whole weekend - we are desperate for some sunny days - roll on Spring! Until the next digest....happy Waltons watching! Kerith KAREN'S COMMENT: Yes, I had a flier about the cruise the other day. It does look like a lot of fun. Is anyone going?
Hi everyone! Noreen, I am a huge Titanic buff! I think all of the story's involving the disaster and the attempts to bring up artifacts are so interesting! I also love anything that has to do with Ireland. Music, culture, accent, and of course, Ireland itself! Although I don't have very much Irish ancestry, my grandmothers family has some Irish background (the Dempsey family- if any one's familiar with Jack Dempsey the boxer, he is a distant cousin of mine). Now, for the Waltons part of this message :o) What is the last Walton episode about? I don't know if the episode I saw was the last one or not because I missed the next days episode, and when I watched the show the following evening it was back to The Foundling again. I am happy that TNN is still airing the series!!!! Nicole
KAREN'S COMMENT: Hopefully Nicole, if someone answers your question, they will answer mine at the same time. Add me to the list of Titanic lovers too. I adored the film and the whole story surrounding the ship is simply fascinating.
>> This is really quite a random comment but I wonder if anyone else thinks it too. The Waltons try to have some kind of perfect family but they never treat their children equally. When John Boy goes to College there is a huge fuss and he gets his own car, but then Jason has to make do with far less attention and no car. Is it just me or are there lots of other examples of this sort of thing happening?>> In Response to this, John Boy earned his car. I don't remember Jason going off to do work in exchange for a car as his brother did. Also, John Boy was the first child of this mountain family to make it to college, I think this would be a huge deal. Courtney KAREN'S COMMENT: I think you've made a very valid point. John Boy was the first in the family to get to college and that would have been an enormous achievement, and a very exciting time for the family.
Hi Karen and Walton Friends, While doing some research on the internet for information on Earl Hamner, I found this piece, stating that Earl Hamner Jr. has a new book coming out in April, 1999 and that it is called " The Avocado Drive Zoo". Question: Could anyone name all the books, that Earl Hamner has written? The children are out of school for March break next week and we are making plans to visit my Mother for the week. Since Mother doesn't have cable or a computer, I will have to go without seeing the Waltons for the week. I will be sure to program the VCR for A Decade of the Waltons coming this Monday at 9pm (EST). Shirley KAREN'S COMMENT: I definitely could NOT name all of his books! Can anyone? Enjoy A Decade of the Waltons. :-)
Hello everyone...... I'm really enjoying the first season of the Waltons on TNN here in the United States....I would like to invite everyone to visit my homepage and go to the Walton's page off of my main page....I've been doing a lot of work on it as of late and have added some neat stuff....including an episode guide with photos from each episode.....also I have a new poll for this month going on....what is your favorite place on the Waltons? Am adding more and more every day and am coming up with lots of new ideas......hope you'll visit and please sign my guest book so I'll know you visited.....Other ideas are coming up so if you have something you'd like to see let me know....I'm hoping to get so big that I'll have to move my pages to a whole new Walton's site.......My addy is http://www.oocities.org/nashville/opry8776 Please stop by and let me know what you think........ Night everyone!!! Larry
KAREN'S COMMENT: What is your favorite place on The Waltons? Fantastic question...I don't know! Maybe the top of the mountain where they often go for picnics. I love sitting on mountains and looking around at the views. But then again I love the Baldwin house too! And Ike's store is fascinating with all the things for sale.....
Just want to thank you for including me in your Walton mailings. I've been a fan for many years and it reminds me of my teen years growing up! Pleasant memories. Found it interesting to see that you have so many Canadian fans! Like Noreen who wrote recently, I, too, am from Vancouver and follow the Waltons. Oddly enough, I'm a follower of Titanic "stuff" just like her. Amazing that two people would be interested in two very different things! Can anyone tell what happened to Ronnie Claire Edwards and Leslie Winston after the show went off the air? I always like to know where people end up. I'm also always curious (nosy) about ages of actors in shows. Any idea where I might find this info? Anyway, sorry to be so long winded. Keep up the good work! Janet Vancouver, B.C. KAREN'S COMMENT: You might have a look at the Internet Movie Database for some of that information. Ronnie Claire Edwards has kept very busy but hopefully some people will write and tell us more.
Hi everyone, As promised here is the next little bit of the article I was sent. Its from tiger Beat. There is no date on the pages. The pictures seem to indicate that the article and photo and photo shoot on set was done around Season 2 or Season 3. They did Richard Thomas' profile first, the next one is Kami Cotler. Kami Cotler was born in Long Beach California on June 17, 1965. Her father owns a chain of clothing stores in orange County California and her mother is an executive with IBM. Kami is in the second grade school at Rossmoor School in Rossmoor. In the summer of 1970 Kami's mother took her and her younger brother Jeff to a local photographer to have their pictures taken. The photographer was so taken with Kami's red hair and her sunny disposition that he suggested Mrs Cotler send her picture to an agent friend of the photographer. The agent called Kami and her mother in for an interview but decided that the child was too young. A year later she remembered Kami and got her, her first role in the Homecoming. The outstandingly successful CBS Television network drama special on which the Waltons is based. Kami lives with her parents Ken and Barbara in Rossmoor. She swims and takes ballet lessons and likes to read, especially other peoples lines that she learns as well as her own. ------------------- For Mary who raised the thought about the possible inequality of treatment with the kids. I have that the same thought. I can recall to mind John being upset with Erin quite a few times, mostly regarding her romances and wanting to get married to Chad and Ashley. He was also very angry at Erin in another episode for taking a job minding two children of a young widower. She wanted to help the family financially. Olivia threatened to take a switch to Ben for teasing Maryellen (I can't recall the name of this episode its where Maryellen meets a boy at the pond while she is wading ) and in the later series "The Wager, when Jim Bob is telling Elizabeth she needs to be tough on being Erin and Mary Ellen's trainer, he reminds her of a time where Elizabeth got blamed for something Erin did and that John took Elizabeth to the smokehouse. There was also the time when Ben took a photo of Erin and it won a prize in the paper and Erin got the chance to go to Camp Lee or Rockfish as a guest and John really got angry and forbid her to go until later when Mary Ellen talked him around. In the "Poltergeist" episode John threatens to 'give Elizabeth some attention" she may not want. (this is when John and the family had no idea what was happening to Elizabeth. With this mind, it seems John may have been slightly harder on the girls? I don't have any episodes where he is as threatening with the boys (of course I don't have a lot of the early series on video. I would have thought Maryellen dyeing Jim Bob's hair to see how hers would look (early series) and Jim Bob being rude to Corabeth (in a later series episode) would warrant more of a severe reaction than what was given. I don't know if I mentioned this in a previous digest but I noticed the actress that played Vanessa (Curt's sister), Linda Purl, was also in Happy Days as Richard Cunningham's girlfriend. I always am reminded of Jon Walmsley when I see Ron Howard! I noticed that Dick Sergeant plays the role of Ben's officer in the Marines. I thought Dick Sergeant played Darren Stevens in Bewitched as the original Darren before Dick York? In the profile on Eric Scott I will do in a few weeks it mentions he was a guest on "Bewitched". Thanks Karen for the book info re Robert Weverka). Goodnight all Kaz from Oz KAREN'S COMMENT: Thank you for the article on Kami. I've often wondered how she got started in show business. Linda Purl also appeared in a later season of Happy Days as Fonzie's girlfriend too. She's a fabulous actress.
Hello Karen, Thank you for making such an exploratory site on "The Walton's" I really enjoyed you documentaries on each of the characters. Thank You! I just made a site on Michael Learned, and the state of New York. She is my favorite actress and I live in New York too. Your invited to see what is on it anytime. Please visit my site! http://www.angelfire.com/ny2/michaellearned Thanks Again for making your site so enjoyable!!! Noelle Kanakaredes KAREN'S COMMENT: I told Noelle that I would add her letter to this digest. Fantastic to have another Waltons related site on the Internet. There's quite a few newer ones to visit this week. Enjoy them all!
