The Sun-Herald, 14 September 1997 New star for Hall of Fame Reclusive Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett will break a long tradition of shunning the local music industry when he inducts singer/songwriter Paul Kelly into the Hall of Fame during tomorrow week's ARIA (Australia Record Industry Association) awards ceremony. In what is shaping as the highlight o local rock and roll's annual night of backslapping, Christine Anu, Linda and Vicka Bull, and Renee Geyer will perform a tribute to Kelly, one of Australia’s most enduring and acclaimed musicians. Organisers were still trying to add ex-Crowded House member Neil Finn to the tribute late last week and said Kelly himself would also perform. Garrett's appearance, agreed as a mark of respect to Kelly, is a major coup for the ARIAs. During a long career, Garrett and Midnight Oil have always refused to appear on awards shows, even banning themselves from Countdown when the band was up-and-coming. Another highlight of the show - to be broadcast on Channel 10 - is the coming together of two generations of Australian music, with a duet by veteran John Farnham and popular young vocal group Human Nature. It will be the first time their song, Every time you Cry, is sung in public. Other performers on a night when Australian talent is being displayed, at the expense of big-name overseas acts, include Savage Garden - which has been nominated for 13 awards - Tina Arena, Leonardo's Bride, and The SuperJesus. Rehearsals are already under way for the big night, which will be hosted by Paul McDermott, from ABC's irreverent Good News Week program. -Brett Thomas
