SMH THE GUIDE, 13 OCTOBER 1997 Channelling Richard Fidler Presenter - Race Around The World (9.30pm Monday on ABC-TV) and Mouthing Off(8.30pm Tuesdays and Saturdays on Foxtel's comedy channel). You're a former Doug Anthony All Stars member. Did you guys ever meet Doug? Yeah, Dauntless Doug, who is known to his native Americans as He-Who-Combs-Over-His-Bald-Spot did us the honour of appearing on Live and Sweaty via satellite and reciting the words to Breaking Up is Hard to Do on our final tour. What have you done with your DAAS persona? I keep it aside for any situation that requires stupidity and moral cowardice. Is there any sibling rivalry between you and fellow All-Stars alumni? None of us will be truly happy until the other two are painfully humiliated and hounded from the business. Did you ever wish you had to chance to race around the world making films yourself? Absolutely, but there's no way I would have gone to Mongolia, Botswana or Lapland like those poor bastards. It would have been Pairs, New York, Tokyo ... all the cushy billets. Mouthing Off has been described as your own personal dinner party; what are you cooking? A slightly rancid tuna mornay perhaps. Or a not quite dead bit of sashimi that's still wriggling on the plate. Is it hard work making sure you offend someone every week on Mouthing Off? It sure is. Last week we ran out of options so I had to abuse myself. I sat in angry silence for the entire show. What's the worst thing about working in television and about working in television? At the risk of stating the obvious, it has to be the news and current affairs; it's so dumb and venal. The worst part about working in TV is having people abuse you at the football. When you look back over your life, what do you want to see? Perhaps a large shrine dedicated to me in Hyde Park. I know it's asking a lot. -JANE FREEMAN
