In the 1990 Australian general election (held 24th March 1990), Tim Ferguson stood as an Independant candidate for the Victorian seat of Kooyong. This electorate is a safe Liberal (Conservative) seat and was held, until his retirement, by Andrew Peacock, who was one of the more senior Liberals at the time. Mr Peacock has been given by the media (and/or cultivated for himself) the image of a bit of a playboy. This is because, among other things, he has been married three times, he always looks tanned, coiffed and well dressed, and he has been associated with the actress Shirley MacLeane. Anyhow, Tim decided to run against him in the general election, with his major policy being that you should vote for him as he is much more beautiful than Andrew. Tim got 2,471 primary votes (this was 3.67% of the vote) and lasted until the third round of preference distributions, when he was eliminated with 2,816 votes (4.18% of the vote). I think this was enough of the vote to to allow him to get his deposit back. Andrew Peacock was re-elected with 64.81% of the vote (based on a two party preferred distribution).
