This web page features that delightful BBC TV Comedy series The Good Life or as it is known in America Good Neighbors. So why the change in name? Simply because there had been a previous The Good Life in America - a sitcom that ran on NBC from September 1971 to January 1972 starring Larry Hagman. The change in name by the producers was to avoid confusion with this original programme. Given the American name it is appropriate to record how this desktop theme was conceived and created.

In June 1998 I received an e-mail from a Chris Wyller from Kansas who wrote.....

I stumbled on to your website while looking for "One Foot in the Grave" links and was very pleased to find more Brit stuff. I got a few desktop themes and didn't know they existed until today. I am an avid fan of "Keeping up Appearances", "One Foot in the Grave" "Mr Bean" and Fawlty Towers". Why I'm writing is to ask if there's any similar themes to "Good Neighbors" AKA "The Good Life"? I'd sooner loose my good eye than miss that show! If this doesn’t exist, Is there a way I could perhaps manufacture such a theme? I'm sure that theme would be in demand as the show is still popular here in Kansas. and I for one wouldn't mind seeing Felicity's face when I boot up in the mornings. All in all, this site is great! I got her book marked. Keep, Keeping Up! Chris "Mr Goodwrench" Wyller.

So I wrote back and offered to help Chris put together a theme - he had the resources - I had the experience of putting the themes together. Three months and many e-mails later this theme pack is the result. The point of this tale is a true experience of Good Neighbours from both sides of the pond collaborating to create something that neither by themselves good achieve - such is the power of the Internet. I must again thank Chris for his enthusiasm and ideas in developing this theme and we trust you will enjoy it for many months to come.

The Good Life is a delightful BBC sitcom from the 70's and stars Richard Briers as Tom Good, Felicity Kendal as Barbara Good, Penelope Keith as Margo Leadbetter and Paul Eddington as Margo's long suffering husband Jerry Leadbetter.

Barbara and Tom Good decide to leave the rat race of everyday life and become as self sufficient as possible by turning the large rear garden into an urban farm full of livestock and crops. They are convinced that they can lead the Good Life without ever having to leave their home in the suburbs of London and become very eco conscious conserving every piece of waste to ensure that nothing they produce (or for that matter their livestock!) is wasted. Their neighbours, the Leadbetters are aghast at the idea of a farm next door and initially do all in their power to stop Tom and Barbara from fulfilling their dream. Margo and Jerry are portrayed as typically middle class snobs and are alarmed at the whole idea of animals living adjacent to their well kept lawn and gardens. Margo (she who must be obeyed) takes pity on Barbara and is sure that Tom is up to no good. As the series unfolds, Margo and hen pecked husband Jerry mellow to the Goods ideals and even engage in the odd bit of farming much to the delight of Tom who really has a soft spot for Margo despite all her protestations.

Barbara and Tom show Margot and Jerry how to gather the harvest....

The Good Life is another BBC classic which remains popular to this day and enjoys re-runs all over the world. It first appeared on British Television on 4th April 1975 and in all there were 28 episodes in four series of 7 shows during the years 1975 - 1977. In addition there were two specials, a Christmas episode in 1977 and a Royal Command performance in 1978. The success of the show fuelled the careers of it's stars with Penelope Keith going on to star in To The Manor Born and Paul Eddington starring in the hit TV comedy shows Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister.
