You have surfed into a tribute site to some of the best in BBC
comedies, captured here in the form of Windows95 Desktop Themes
for you to download and enjoy on your PC. This page is my tribute
to the ever popular One Foot in the
Grave starring Richard
Wilson as Victor
Meldrew and Annette
Crosbie as his
long suffering wife Margaret.
After 26 years of loyal service, Victor is retired from his job as a security guard for Watson-Mycroft. He's replaced by a box and a recorded message ("it does everything you used to do... except complain about the air conditioning!")
With enforced retirement as the prize for such loyal service, Victor becomes even more grumpier with the world at large and Margaret finds life full of new challenges, not least of which is Victor himself. Set in the fictitious village of Walkford, near Shaftsbury, Dorset, the sitcom series (there have been five series to date, the last episode aired in 1995) centers on Victor Meldrew, his neighbours and misadventures.
The series has popularised a few memorable phrases in modern English, notably Victor's I don't Believe it often used to express his inability to comprehend the current situation!! The series also features a tortoise in the opening credits which has come to symbolise the show and Victor Meldrew - somewhat slow and set in his ways. Victor in typical pose at a nagging problem....
Since it's launch on British Television in January 1990, it has been a popular show with the British public. There have been a total of five 6-part series running from 1990 to the final show in 1995. The BBC also featured the popular couple in six Christmas Specials (feature length episodes shown over the Christmas Period) in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1996. The 1993 Christmas Special featured Victor and Margaret Meldrew attempting a holiday in Portugal - One Foot in the Algarve!!
