Will LFN be back for a fifth season?

Season Five of LFN will begin airing in the U.S. on January 7, 2001 on USA Network. Season Five will consist of eight new episodes. As of now, it is unlikely that LFN will return for a sixth season.

I am not sure when Season Five will begin airing in Canada. I have e-mailed several WIC stations in Canada. The general reply is that they will probably purchase the right to air the eight new episodes, but nothing has been settled yet. Here are the emails I received from various channels.

A-Channel Season 5 of Nikita is not available to broadcast in Canada. A-Channel will continue to repeat episodes from season 3 and 4 of Nikita.

CFCF 12 They have produced 8 new episodes only. Our company is still in negociations. I will email you when I have an answer.

CHEK It is likely that we'll have the 8 new episodes of Nikita (Year 5), but no confirmation yet. The USA Network is not available in Canada, so unless you know someone there who could tape the episodes, it will be wait and see. Suggest you contact us in a month or so, and we'll update you of any change.

BCTV We are still waiting to hear whether we have the broadcast rights to the 8 new episodes. Hopefully we will know by the end of this week.

Where is LFN being filmed?

LFN is filmed in a soundstage built in a bedroom community on the outskirts of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The producers chose to film in Canada mainly due to lower costs compared to the US.

Why is the show called La Femme Nikita in the US, and Nikita in Canada?

La Femme was dropped from the title in Canada to ensure audiences don't confuse it with something from Quebec.

Is the show Canadian or American?

LFN is a joint venture or "co-production" between US and Canadian production companies--in our case, that's Warner Brothers (USA) and Fireworks Entertainment (Canada). Sometimes co-productions, whether they be in Canada or elsewhere, can involve several entities, but in our case it's only two. Canadian co-productions are becoming increasingly popular because it's far cheaper to shoot a TV show in Canada than in the United States, primarily because of the tax breaks and other benefits Canada provides for such co-productions. In addition, the US dollar is currently very strong against the Canadian dollar, so we'll get even more bang for our buck this season.

Canada doesn't give away these tax breaks and other freebies to any production that decides to shoot in Canada, however. The general requirement is that 70% of the above-the-line talent (actors, writers, producers) are Canadian citizens. Whenever we interview a writer, or consider hiring a director or a guest actor, we have to keep the 70% figure in mind. The Canadian government is very strict about this.

While Joel and Bob are US citizens, almost everyone else involved with the show is Canadian.

Who design the clothes worn by Michael and Nikita?

Laurie Drew is the costume designer for LFN. She won a Gemini Award for her work on LFN in '98.

Peta Wilson, 27, who stars as Nikita, the pouty secret agent, is not locked into one particular look. For her action shots she wears clothes designed for skiboarding. For intimate scenes she favours European designer Ferre Valentino and Balenciaga. Roy Dupuis, 35, who plays her lover Michael, wears sleek Prada or Gaultier to show off his physique. Who designs the sunglasses worn by the cast?

Peta Wilson wears sunglasses designed by her own company, Psycht. In Season Four, Birkoff's new squared-off glasses are LaFont Team 50 frames (order #T95). If you wish to order these for yourself, they will cost you roughly $400 or more, depending on where you get them.

I am not too sure what kind of glasses the rest of the cast wears.

LFN only accepts scripts from established writers who are represented by an agent. According to Chris Heyn, assistant to Joel Surnow, LFN do not read any scripts or story ideas submitted by anyone outside this prescribed process for legal reasons. LFN cannot afford to put themselves in a position where the show is accused of using ideas without permission. That is why, if any script or story idea does manage to make it to the LFN offices, they will be returned unread.
