To Shatter a Heart
This is right after Treizes death when shes at the console at MO2. At least I think thats where she is. Anyway, theres a quote in here when she surrenders but I dont have her exact words so I wrote it to the best of my memory. Sorry
Note also: it's kinda short. Much more so than my normal fics...
She choked back the sob that threatened to tear painfully from her throat as she watched the near blinding explosion before her. Her heart thudded agonizingly in her chest, a sad, but constant reminder of what she had just lost only seconds ago, the sad reminder that would beat until her last breath, whispering his name. Her eyes teared up, but she blinked them away, refusing to cry for him, he had what he wanted, she thought lowering her head to the console, closing her eyes trying to turn out the vision of Tallgeese II disintegrating in a brilliant explosion of light. He had his glorious, valiant death the death of a solider the only death he believed was fit for a man of his stature maybe he was right, or maybe he was just being stupidly honorable again, she thought bitterly but quickly bit back the thought realizing she was being selfish. Treize didnt belong to her, no matter how much she wished, hoped or prayed otherwise, and now, now she didnt even have a chance.
But then, wasnt that one of the things I loved about him? His honor, and how much it meant to him in a world where honor had been forgotten and discarded? Where the world of the living was being overrun by machinery where the very price of a human live was dwindling away yes, she thought to herself. He has given his life along with those who gave their lives for his dream; he too sacrificed everything to see that humanity survives. To ensure that everyone, every last human saw how much things had gone wrong, and just how important humans were, in space or back on Earth. I myself would have given my life for his dream, and now she opened her eyes and stared blankly ahead. I wish I had at least we would have been together.
She listened quietly to the soft, confused whispers and rustling behind her, all the soldiers shocked, and equally devastated at the death of their leader. She lifted her hand standing tall, there was nothing left for her to do, her part in the battle, in this battle was over. The Earth no longer had their leader; they could not go on without him.
"Contact White Fang and tell them the Earth surrenders,"
"W-what?" he stuttered, in disbelief?
"Its humiliating enough, dont make me repeat it! Tell White Fang we surrender!" she snapped irritably and turned back to the viewing panel whispering to the now bleak, dark view before her. "Mr. Treize you were wonderful,"
Unable to make her last words to him personal she said only what she felt she could say. That he had done a marvelous job, and was truly an inspiration, despite what her own heart was telling her. Whispering deceitful, selfish words about how little consideration hed shown her in this decision. But she reminded herself there was more at stake than her; he had died for her future, and for Earths future. Earth, something he truly loved, she couldnt help being jealous, she always felt as though he regarded something more important than her.
Even to the point of being completely silly sometimes, shed never had the courageous to ask him herself how he felt about her, she just remained quietly obedient. Now, she wished she had she wished she had asked just where their close, but strange relationship had meant to him and where they stood. Now shed never know it was a sorrowing thought, but also a hopeful one. At least she wouldnt have had to live with the heart wrenching disappointment had his answer been of a negative sort.
She raised her head from its lowered position and quietly padded out of the now virtually silent room retreating to a small side window where she could be alone with her thoughts for a while, even if that little while were only a few minutes. It would have to be enough
Have I done enough? Could I have done something to prevent this? She shook her head in denial. No, it was his decision alone to leave this world and I should have seen it coming, once he asked for the death toll and then as he began to recite the names. He must have spent so much time thinking about them oh Mr. Treize; you didnt deserve such a fate! How I wish I could have died and solved all of your problems, she lowered her head defeated. But it would never have been possible.
She repressed the tears that were begging to fall now now she had to be strong. Strong for Mr. Treize, she could not let his sacrifice be in vain his example was to live on, to serve as an example, a dark period of humanitys history, so that it may never be repeated again.
Thank you, Mr. Treize for giving your life for Earth, for the colonies and for all humans. I hope your example should never die out and that you will be remembered forever more she thought, her last, final prayer to Treize until she had time to gather her thoughts, and to visit him formally at his grave. She smiled sadly and returned to the control room and began to give orders to her soldiers his memory burning heatedly in her heart, never to be forgotten.
