Mike Blowers kept saying last night that he
and Ed Sprague will split time at third
base, but no doubt he was just being
gracious. Blowers looks to get some
serious playing time, based on his
late-season resurgence.
He has started eight of the past 10 games
at third, going 11-for-32 (.344) with three
homers and three doubles. Plus, he is
making some plays, including a diving stop
on Indians rookie first baseman Richie
Sexson's ball down the line in the fifth,
probably Blowers' best defensive play of
the year.
``Let's face it, I haven't played every day
in two years,'' he said. ``That stretch
where I played 57 in a row caught up with
me. I wasn't real happy after they made
the trade for Sprague, but maybe it was
the best thing. I feel physically and
mentally great.''
That gives him a big edge over Sprague,
who is 9-for-62 (.145) in 18 games with
the A's.
``What's been done is done,'' Blowers
said. ``I just want to make the most of it.''
HENDERSON MILESTONES: Rickey
Henderson's four hits broke his tie with
Ted Williams on the all-time hit chart, and
yes, he noticed. ``You didn't ask me about
that,'' he jibed reporters after the game. ``I
didn't know last night, when you asked,
but tonight I knew.''
