Carly came to Port Charles to find her biological mother, Bobbie Spencer. Bobbie was a teenage prostitute who gave Carly up for adoption because she knew she would be unable to take care of her. Carly had been
adopted by Virginia Benson and her husband and is really named Caroline Benson. Virginia's
husband left when Carly was small. Carly didn't know she was adopted until her elementary school class brought in baby pictures and the picture that Virginia gave Carly was the same picture another child had.
When a detective Bobbie hired managed to track Carly down years later, Carly went to Port Charles to find out about her birth mother. There Carly became friends with Monica Quartermaine,
began working for her at the Wellness Center and entered the student nursing program. To
get a job in physical therapy, she changed her transcripts. She became friendly with Bobbie
and her husband Tony Jones and son Lucas. However, she didn't tell Bobbie she was her daughter. She felt insecure and unloved and jealous because Bobbie had other children. Soon her Uncle Luke
found out the truth. He kept it quiet and told Bobbie that her daughter had died.
Carly met Jason at
Jake's bar and soon they began having sex, keeping all other information including their names a secret. This ended when Jason decided he didn't want to cheat on his girlfriend Robin anymore. Eventually Carly and Jason became just friends. Carly and Tony began an affair and when Bobbie found
out, she divorced Tony. Carly and Tony got an apartment and soon A.J. Quartermaine moved next door and became close friends with Carly. In the
meantime Carly had quit the student nursing program. One night, after fighting with Tony, Carly was in a bar waiting for Jason, and met up with
A.J. They drank together and ended up having sex. Later that night, she went back to her
apartment with Tony and had sex with him. Soon Carly found out from A.J. that he and Jason were
brothers. Carly soon found out she was pregnant, but didn't tell Tony she wasn't sure who the father
was, him or A.J. A.J., an alcoholic had "blacked out" the night, but was slowly starting to remember it. To make A.J. not remember the night they spent together she set him up to look like he
had been drinking again. Once A.J. did remember, she faked a sonogram to make A.J. believe the baby was due a month
earlier than it was.
Eventually Tony found out her lies and decided to sue for sole custody. In anger, Carly told Tony that Jason was the father. She
showed up at Jason's penthouse and asked if she could stay there. Carly woke up bleeding one night and passed out. Jason then rushed her to the hospital where she had to undergoe a C-section and deliver the baby prematurely. Carly's son was born with a birth defect and Carly suffered from internal bleeding. Jason however, authorized a surgery to save the baby's life. Carly managed to recover, but was suffering from post-partum depression and couldn't even touch her new son. Blood tests showed the baby wasn't Tony's, but was actually A.J.'s. A.J., however, is an idiot who doesn't know how to read a blood test. He didn't realize the baby was actually his, and believed that the baby was Jason's. After she was partially recovered, she left for a few weeks to get her head together and get over her fear of Michael.
While Carly was gone, Jason named the baby Michael. Carly returned a few weeks later, but was still unable to hold Michael. Carly then came to peace with Bobbie and her adoption and managed to hold Michael. Then overcome with love and wanting to make Bobbie happy, Carly told Bobbie the truth. Carly's adoptive mother,
Virginia Benson, came to Port Charles the same night, and was shocked to hear of what Carly had been
up to. She had a stroke and died. Then several weeks later, an insane Tony kidnapped Michael. Carly and Jason were distraught, but eventually managed to save Michael. Tony, however, was set free at his trial. Upon hearing this verdict, Carly went slightly crazy and shot Tony. Carly is now locked up in an insane asylum awaiting trial.
