Writing Wrongs: Fanfic for Nezheads
By Mina Nezwalker-Green
Well, I figured this might be a good topic to write about for this
edition
of the newsletter, now that the Monkeesfic list is in full swing.
First off, Michael is the most written about Monkee on the Monkeesfic
list
(it may have to do with the Pres and VP of the MNPM being the main
contributors to the lists *g*) Some of the stories, thought they feature
all of the Monkees, focus in on one Monke in particular. Michael is a
very
common one to use. As on now, nobody has posted a story featuring Davy (
in
fact, some stories treat him rather badly, torturing him and such.)
What is the attraction to write about Michael? The Monkees television
show
characters were not very in-dept. You have Michael, the leader, Davy,
the
romantic, Peter, the "dummy" (in quotes, because I don't think he was a
dummy) and Micky, the lunatic mad-scientist.
When you try to go deeper into the characters, you find Michael and
Micky
are the most interesting. There is nothing much more to Davy then his
romancing women. And Peter, on the show, was just the naive one who got
them into trouble most of the time. Michael is also the least-explored
Monkee. You have episodes with totally focus on Peter and Davy, and
occasionally Micky, but their are very few Michael stories in the Monkee
show. So you get a clean pallate to paint with when it comes to writing
Michael. He is not very established, and you can do almost anything with
him.
Mikefic, as it is called, as gives the writer the oppertunity to pair
Michael off with any woman they see fit. Sometimes it is a character
already on the show, who is enhanced by the writers own vision (read
Agent
Newbeau's MonkeeLove series for such writing). Or a whole new character
can
be invented for the story.
Here are three of the girls Mike has from different Mikefics
Ellen Farnsby- The MonkeeLove Series by Agent Newbeau- Ellen was
introduced
in the Monkees episode "Monkees on the Line". She is an actress. Newbeau
has turned the character from the rather-eccentric character on the
show,
to the wonderful, caring woman Michael fell in love with in her story.
An
interesting plot line has developed now in Newbeau's stories: Ellen
becoming pregnant and Mike proposing to her. This plot turn will bring
out
a whole new side of Mike: The father and husband. MonkeeLove grows up
Michael from the character on the show. It is a wonderful change.
Isabel- The Trauma Series by Madame Spy and Enola- Another wonderful
girl
for Michael. Isabel was introduced in Madame's stories, starting as
Peter's
crush, but ending up as Michael's girlfriend. But she really shines
through
in the Trauma Series. Isabel, a orphan, is given a new family with the
Monkees. Throught the series she is proven to be a strong woman, and a
perfect match for Michael. Madame and Enola's new story will focus on
Isabel, and I cannot wait to read it, as she is a great character who
shines through in any story she is in.
Call it ego, but I have to put my own character in with this category.
Layla Williams- The Monkee-ette series by Mina Moseley- Layla Williams
is
one of the more complex characters, along with Isabel and Ellen, paired
with Michael in fics. Originally from Texas, Layla had a tough upbring,
with an abusive dad, and her mom commiting suicide. Layla, who lives in
the
Monkees pad, and is tenitavely joining the band, has a spotty past,
being
brought out in the new story, Past Relived.
Three different girls from three different stories. But they all have
one
thing in common: They are great matches for Michael, and all give an
interesting twist to the Monkees universe, and to the Michael Nesmith
character from the Monkees.
