Chapter One: "And so we meet"
Lucky walked into Jake's and plopped down on a barstool. He checked the pocket
in his jacket again and sighed with relief when he felt the envelope crinkle in
his hand. He looked around the bar. A drunk was propped up on the stool next to
him, his head down and a beer in his hand. A young woman was playing pool with
some big guys. She smiled and laughed a little. She was looking to get laid.
Lucky laughed a little and continued his scan of the room. An older woman was at
the jukebox looking at the selections. She pressed a number and music filled the
room. She smiled and walked towards him. She looked at the stool next to the
drunk, then the stool next to Lucky and took a seat. She glanced at Lucky and he
met her gaze. “Bartender… I'd like a beer, please.” She said. Her voice was
sweet.
The bartender nodded and looked at Lucky. He raised his hands. “No nothin…”
“He'd like a beer too.” The woman said, cutting off Lucky. She smiled at him and
to his surprise he smiled back. She stretched out her hand and Lucky shook it.
Her skin was soft and her hand was delicate. “I'm Veronica, what's your name?”
“Lucky.”
She laughed. “Lucky. I like that name. Aren’t you a little young to be in a bar,
Lucky?”
Lucky blushed and she laughed again. “Yeah… well I have business… “ He
explained. She nodded and looked the boy over. He couldn't be more than 17. Yet
he was exceptionally handsome. His eyes were as blue as the ocean, and they
seemed to change with his emotions. He lifted up his beer and took a sip, and
she noticed his lips. Her gaze moved down towards his body. A little on the
skinny side, she thought, but not bad. Not bad at all. She shifted on her stool
and looked back at Lucky. She shook her head. She shouldn't be thinking of this.
The boy was young enough to be her son… maybe her grandson. She laughed and
Lucky looked up. Lucky looked up at Veronica and smiled slightly when she
laughed. She had a nice laugh. Her eyes sparkled and the skin wrinkled at the
sides. She tossed her dark hair over her shoulder. She was a nice looking woman.
Nice body. But she was old. Plus, he loved Liz. His thoughts drifted to Liz
sitting at home waiting for him. He shook his head and looked around the bar
again for his contact. He spotted Joe holding a cuestick and leaning over some
girl.
“Excuse me for a moment, Veronica.” He got up and walked over to Joe and they
began a conversation.
Veronica watched him. She reached into her purse and pulled out a tiny vile. She
quickly opened it and poured it into Lucky's beer. She saw him turn around to
come back and she shoved the empty vile back into her purse. 'Now's the time to
put on the charm, Ronnie.' She thought to herself. Lucky sat back down and
reached for his wallet. She tenderly touched his arm and he looked up at her.
“What's the hurry?” She mused and leaned in towards him. “Am I that repulsive?”
Lucky laughed and shook his head. “Not at all, it's just that…”
“Hey. How about we finish this drink, then you can leave without hurting my
feelings.” Lucky hesitated, but sat back down and picked up his beer. He could
feel her eyes watching him and he put the beer to his lips and took a sip. Then
he took a gulp. He closed his eyes as dizziness passed over him. He opened them
again and saw Veronica staring at him with concern.
“Lucky? Lucky are you ok?”
He blinked a few times and focused on Veronica's face. “I'm fine. Really I am.”
She smiled and sat back on the stool. “Well then, our beer awaits.” She lifted
her beer bottle and he lifted his. They clinked and took another sip.
