Chapter Nine: “Home is Where the Heart Is”
Liz stepped back momentarily, hurt at the response she got from Lucky. She took
a deep breath and kept walking forward. No matter how much Lucky resisted her,
she would be there like he was there for her.
“Hi Lucky. How are you feeling?” Lucky's drowsy eyes met Liz's and he grimaced.
“I'm ok,” he muttered. “But I'd like to go to bed.” Liz shot a look at Laura who
nodded her head slowly.
“Yes, that would probably be the best thing for now honey.” Laura said and took
his arm to lead him up the stairs. Lucky didn't resist although he shut his
eyes. He slowly began climbing the stairs.
Unfortunately now was the time that that side-effect called dizziness decided to
hit. He outstretched his hand and grabbed for anything that didn't let him fall.
He closed his eyes tight and sucked in another breath of air, preparing for a
fall.
It never happened. Something kept him from falling. He opened his eyes and gazed
over to what it was. People. His gaze shifted to Luke who was suddenly
supporting the majority of his weight. Laura held his hand and Liz stoked the
hair out of his face.
Lucky immediately felt sick. These were people that loved him, he told himself.
They wouldn't hurt you. The feeling of guilt grew in his stomach and he tried to
push it down. They wanted to help him right?
Lucky opened his mouth. He wanted to spill everything he was feeling, everything
that went through his mind. He closed it quickly. What would they think of him?
What if they laughed? Or abandoned him?
These thoughts were to overwhelming for Lucky. He quickly climbed to his feet,
stumbling a little and made it up the rest of the stairs. He walked quickly to
his room and slammed the door shut. The outraged cries of his family penetrated
through the door. He squeezed his eyes shut and let out a short cry of
desperation, then staggered over to the bed, taking refugee in the feeling of
home it gave him.
He didn't even hear the door open when Liz came in to the room. She took in the
site of him and realized how much he was really hurting. She crawled into the
bed with him and wiped the tears off his face.
He didn't resist.
