Chapter Ten: “Ray of Light”
“Zephyr in the sky at night - I wonder
Do my tears of mourning
Sink beneath the sun”
Light filled the room through the blindless window across from his bed as Lucky
slept soundless, and for once, peacefully. Liz was still with him, her arms
entangled in his and her head resting on his chest.
Lucky slowly woke up from his slumber, not anxious to open his eyes. He let out
a silent sigh and opened his eyes, quickly shutting them when the light got in
them. He cautiously opened one eye, then the other, adjusting to the state of
the room. He took in a deep breath and noticed his surroundings. He was in his
room. A movement startled him and for the first time he noticed Liz lying with
him. Next to him. On him. His breath stuck in his throat and he closed his eyes
again, remembering everything that happened last night.
“And I feel
Like I just got home
And I feel
And I feel
Like I just got home
And I feel”
He needed to get up. See what was going on. For once since the incident, he
actually felt better. A tiny smile crossed his lips. Liz shifted her position
and opened her eyes. Her eyes caught with Lucky's, and she noticed that he
actually looked content. Not a trace of fear or embarrassment in them. She
smiled up at him and sat up.
“Faster than the speeding light - She's flying
Trying to remember
Where it all began
She's got herself a little piece of heaven
Waiting for the time when
Earth shall be as one”
“Good morning.” She whispered.
“Morning.” Came Lucky's reply.
Her heart skipped a beat. Could this be the end of it? She wondered. She hoped.
“How are you feeling?”
“Hungry.”
Liz laughed and brushed the hair out of Lucky's eyes. “Then lets get you fed.”
She quickly got up and started for the door. She looked behind her for a second,
and walked out of the room. Lucky was following her.
“And I feel
Like I just got home
And I feel
And I feel
Like I just got home
And I feel
Quicker than a ray of light
Quicker than a ray of light
Quicker than a ray of light”
Luke looked up from his paper and looked at Liz bound down the stairs. Her
happiness was apparent, and he wondered why. He looked behind Liz and saw Lucky
pad down the stairs, looking better than he had in days. Luke put down his paper
and stood up to great them. “Hi cowboy… how are you doing?”
Lucky looked at his father. “I'm ok.” He said. He didn't say it rude or mean,
his voice sounded strong, and he meant it.
“Glad to hear it. Let’s go get you some breakfast, shall we?” Lucky nodded and
Luke guided Lucky into the kitchen to face the rest of the family, and
hopefully, have a good meal.
