Chapter Five
Luke, Laura, Lucky and Will sat around the table and talked. Sonny left with
Jason, but they left some men outside the door. Sonny decided to stick around
just in case Luke's father decided to cause more trouble.
Lucky was drinking hot chocolate. He was still shaking and had trouble holding
onto the cup. Luke placed his hand on his arm and said. “Cowboy, he isn't going
to hurt you anymore. So, calm down.”
“I know that, but I just can't stop shaking. Dad, you lived that?” Lucky asked
his eyes starting to water.
“Yes and I would have killed him, but my main goal right then was getting you
safe. I didn't know about Will. You are the one that called me?” Luke said to
his little brother.
“Yes. Dad never let Lucky out of the yard. I had to because what he was doing
wasn't right. What are we going to do now? He has very powerful friends in the
police department back home. He isn't going to let us go without a fight,” Will
said.
“I'll handle our father. Lucky, show Will your room and we will talk more
tomorrow.” Luke said and the boys went upstairs. When Luke was sure they were
gone, he looked at Laura. “I'm going to kill him. Lucky has never been like this
before and all because of my old man. Angel, why did I leave him?” Luke said and
placed his head on the table.
“You didn't know. Luke don't blame yourself. Your father is the one that did all
this, not you. Try to remember that. I'm going up to see if they need anything.
Are you going to call Bobbie tomorrow and tell her about Will?” She asked
getting up from the table.
“Yes. I think I better changes my looks. Lucky and Will jump at the sight of me
because I look like 'father'.” Luke said, choking on the last word.
“He gave you something that wasn't bad. I love your looks. You coming up soon?”
Laura asked him.
“Yes. I need some time alone.” Luke said and he walked to the window to look
out.
Laura walked up the stairs and went into Lucky's room. He was taking off his
shirt and she screamed. Lucky just looked at her and tried to put the shirt back
on. Laura stopped him and Luke ran into the room. Lucky's back and front were
covered with black and blue marks. You could see the imprint of the strap in
some places. “Lucky, he did this to you?” Laura said dropping to her knees and
hugging her son.
“I'm Ok. They don't hurt too much.” Lucky lied.
“I'll go get something to put on them,” Luke said and went to their bathroom. He
picked up a lamp and threw it across the room. He wished his father were right
in front of him because he would kill him.
Lucky and Will both jumped at the sound of the crash. “Don't worry. Luke is just
venting his anger at his father, not you. Will, how bad is your back?” Laura
asked gently pulling him to her.
“I don't need anything.” Will said trying to step back.
“I won't hurt you and neither will Luke. Please let us help you.” Laura begged.
Will took off his shirt and the marks were worse on him than on Lucky. Laura
could have screamed again, but didn't. Luke wasn't the only one who wanted to
kill his father. The scars on the boys were very deep and might never heal. Luke
walked in and both of them treated the boys' wounds. When they were bed, Laura
kept a light burning in the bathroom. “So Will won't get lost.” Laura said and
closed the door.
Luke and Laura got ready for bed. She came out of the bathroom and found Luke
standing in front of the mirror with his shirt off. “He got better,” Luke said
coldly, running a hand over the scar on his stomach. Luke's back and front
matched Will's and Lucky's. Laura walked up and put her arms around him.
“Luke, they will be all right. They have what you didn't, and that was a loving
family willing to help. We will find a way to get through this. I promise.”
Laura said.
“I never wanted this to happen to my kids. I promised myself that they would
never feel the pain I did. Laura, I failed Lucky on that point.” Luke said and
turned around and held her close.
They went to bed and Luke's nightmares came at him again, but this time with a
twist. Luke watched as someone was beating Lucky. He tried to get to him, but
couldn't. He was held back by a strong force. Lucky's screams ripped at Luke's
heart. He did finally reach him and grabbed the man by the shoulder and turned
him around. Luke found himself staring in his own face.
Luke suddenly sat up in bed, covered with sweat and fighting the image of the
dream. Lucky's screams didn't stop even when he was awake. Then suddenly, Luke
realized it wasn't a dream. He grabbed his shirt and went to check on his son.
Will was trying to wake up Lucky, but couldn't get close enough to get to him.
Lucky was in the corner of the room screaming. Luke, with Laura close behind,
walked in and gently placed his hands on Lucky's shoulders. Laura spoke in a
warm and loving voice. “Lucky, wake up honey. You're safe. He isn't here.” Laura
said and started to cry.
It took them awhile to get Lucky to wake up and realize he was safe. Lucky
looked around the room his eyes open very wide. He was covered in sweat and
breathing hard. Luke went to the bathroom and grabbed a wash rag and a glass of
water. He slowly wiped Lucky's face off and tried to get him to calm down. He
had to move slow because he realized how much he looked like his father and he
didn't want to scare him any more. When Lucky's breathing went back to normal,
Luke handed him the glass of water and said, “Drink it slow. It is over, Cowboy,
but your mind doesn't realize it yet. That is going to take time.”
Lucky slowly drank the water and tried to get the nightmare from running through
his head. He looked at his parents and Will and was grateful. He wasn't alone
anymore. “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you,” Lucky finally said.
“Stop, Lucky. You did nothing wrong, so don't apologize. Come on Cowboy, I'll
sit up with you until you go back to sleep,” Luke said and helped him to his
feet. Lucky climbed back into bed and felt like a two-year-old, but he couldn't
get over the fear the dream was causing him. Luke sat on beside his head and
watched him doze off. Laura had sat on Will's bed and looked after him. “Dear
God. You weren't supposed to know what this was like. I let you down.” Luke said
as soon as Lucky had fallen back to sleep.
“Luke, you didn't do this. Your father did, so, don't start blaming yourself.
Lucky will get better and so will Will, but it is going to take time. I am going
to keep telling you this until you believe me.” Laura said.
“Someone is going to have to, Angel, because I don't believe it right now. I
messed up somehow and my son is paying for it.” Luke said picking up Lucky's
head and placing it on his lap. He leaned against the wall and closed his eyes.
Luke was going to leave but he just couldn't do it. Laura watched him and
smiled. “You can't leave him.” Laura said.
“No. I can't. Can you?” Luke asked her.
“No,” she said, getting comfortable on Will's bed. They slept like that for the
rest of the night. No one had any more dreams and they slept well into the
morning. It was Lulu that woke them up. Leslie was trying to keep her out of the
room, but she couldn't do it anymore. The little girl wanted to see her brother
and she wasn't taking no for an answer anymore.
Lulu ran and jumped on Lucky's bed. Luke and Lucky both jumped when she did and
Luke had to grab her. Lucky had slid out of bed and went back to the corner
thinking it was his grandfather. Lulu looked at her father and asked, “What did
I do?”
“Baby, you didn't do anything. Someone hurt Lucky and he is scared. You have to
go slow with him for awhile. He needs to be reminded that love isn't supposed to
hurt,” Luke said getting up to help Lucky, but it was Lulu that got to him
first.
She gently placed a small hand on his check and said, “I'm sorry big brother. I
love you.” Lulu climbed on to his lap and waited for Lucky to put his arms
around her. Lucky did and hugged her. Lulu's three small words broke threw the
wall that Lucky had built up to protect him from his grandfather's harsh words.
He held onto her for a long time and the little girl let him. She wanted to help
her brother and didn't realize she did something that her parents couldn't.
Luke looked up and saw Laura and Will standing beside the bed. “Anyone hungry?”
Laura finally asked.
“Yes,” came four strong voices.
“Good. Get dressed and I'll meet you down stairs,” Laura said, grabbed her robe
and went to start breakfast, but her mother had beaten her to it.
The table was set and breakfast was on the table. “I see Lulu finally got you
up. Who is the boy in the other bed and how is Lucky?” Leslie asked.
“That is Will, Luke's little brother. Lucky is going take time to heal. I think
Lulu help him a lot just few minutes ago. We are going to have to remind him of
how much he is loved for awhile. Mother, when I get my hands on that man, I will
end his life. No one hurts my children and gets away with it.” Laura said
coldly.
