Chapter Six
At the Spencer house that night, it was Lucky’s turn to cook. Luke was looking
over papers that Justus handed him, while Lulu was coloring on the floor. Luke
made the mistake and had read the papers out loud. “Laura Spencer is suing for
custody of the minor Leslie Lu Spencer.” Luke said out loud, “over my dead
body.”
Lucky stopped cooking and waited to hear something about him. He asked in a calm
voice. “What about me?”
“This only mentions Lulu. I don’t know about you,” Luke said.
“I guess she is letting me decide. I’m glad. At least I don’t have to go to
court,” Lucky said and went back to cooking. He didn’t say much during their
meal. Luke even commented him on his cooking but it was useless. Lucky cleaned
up and then went into his room and closed the door. Luke watched as the door
shut and Lucky closed them out. He was at a loss. Lucky wasn’t talking to him or
Lulu at all. He spent little time with his sister and Luke knew it bothered her.
Luke grabbed a movie and put it in the VCR. They sat and watched the Barney and
Friends movie for the hundredth time that week. Lulu was happy when the movie
played. She sat on her father’s lap and laughed all the way through it. He then
gave her a bath and put her to bed.
Lucky sat in his room and sulked. Lucky picked up a notebook and wrote this
down. “She doesn't want me. She wanted Nikolas and Lu but not me. She left to
protect her secret and her son. I’m not the first born or the youngest. I’m
nothing. I’m just Luke Spencer's son. She doesn't love him or me. What did I do
to her? Why doesn't my mother love me? I did everything not cause them trouble.
I didn’t complain or beg for anything. I didn’t argue when she cut my hair and
dyed it. I never complained when we had to pack up and leave in the middle of
the night. Why then doesn't she want me?”
Lucky started to pace and kicked his bag. The flask he was going to take to
school fell out. He picked it up and took a drink. Lucky then went back to work
and buried himself in his books.
Luke popped his head in a hour later and asked, “Lulu is in bed. You want to
talk?”
“No. I have a lot of work to catch up on,” Lucky said not looking up from his
book.
“All right. I am going to check things out at the club. You call me if you have
any problems or if you want anything,” Luke said and then closed the door and
left.
“Daddy, I want my life back,” Lucky said in a low voice with tears falling from
his eyes. Lucky finished up his schoolwork and then went to bed.
The next day he filled up the flask and headed off to school. Lucky took a drink
before he got there. He was at his locker when Chris walked up and asked, “How's
it going, Spencer?”
“Better,” Lucky said looking around for anyone coming. “Here, you gave me a
drink. I’m giving you one,” Lucky said, holding out the flask.
Chris looked at him and then took a drink. The kid was surprised that it was the
good stuff. “Hey, isn’t your dad going to notice this stuff is gone?” Chris
said.
“Naw. Dad doesn't remember what he drinks or not,” Lucky said taking back the
flask.
“Mine marks the bottles. Hey, I have a favor to ask. I’ll give you five dollars
if you fill this up with your dad’s good stuff. Every once in a while,” Chris
offered.
Lucky thought about it and then agreed. “Sure, why not?” Lucky said closing his
locker and going to meet Liz before class.
Lucky and Liz were sitting alone talking about their project when Sarah walked
up. She sat down and smiled sweetly at Lucky. “Hi, I heard your mom is working
at GH now. Nikolas said they had a good talk last night and might even work
through most of their problems. Have you seen her lately?” Sarah said.
“No and I don’t care to. Get lost,” Lucky said, sick of her taunting him.
“You're nothing but a bully. I saw you talking to the school drunk. I bet you
even took a drink or two yourself. What’s wrong, Spencer? Following in your
daddy’s foot steps? I heard that is why Laura really messed around on Luke. He
was so drunk all the time he couldn’t please her in the bedroom,” Sarah said and
left.
Lucky looked after her and broke the pencil he was holding into two pieces. If a
boy would have said that he would have been dead. Liz got up said, “I’ll be
right back.” Sly had sat down and tried to get Lucky to calm down. Everyone was
staring at him and talking in low voices. Lucky had enough of the kids in school
and got up and left. He missed what Liz did to Sarah. “Sis, I have something for
you,” Liz said and Sarah turned around.
She slugged her sister right in the face. Sarah hit the ground and was stunned.
Liz leaned over and pointed a figure at her sister. Her voice was cold and very
calm. “Get this straight. I put up with you my entire life. Mommy and Daddy
aren’t here to stop me from kicking your ass. Stay away from Lucky and stop
tormenting him.”
“I’m telling Gram about this,” Sarah cried.
“Go for it. I don’t care. You are nothing but a big baby,” Liz said and she
walked away.
Emily, Sly, Carrie, and Matthew followed her to go find Lucky but he wasn’t
anywhere to be found. Lucky had skipped school and went to the park to think. He
knew Sarah was lying but part of him still didn’t understand why Laura chose
Stefan over his father. Lucky eventually went to sit under the docks, where
Chris found. “I saw you slip out of school. I heard what the sweetheart said in
the lunchroom. I have a plan to make her pay for that remark,” Chris said
coldly.
“What?” Lucky asked starting to like the idea of getting back at Sarah for once.
“Leave it up to me. I have the perfect plan and all it takes is talking to the
mouths at the school plus a little night work,” Chris said and a cold smile came
across his face. Lucky and Chris spent the day walking around town and talking.
Lucky learned that Chris' parents had split up years ago and he lived with his
father during the school year and his mother during the summer time. He started
drinking when he was about thirteen and his older brother gets him the liquor.
His father works nights and sleeps during the day. He could care a less what
Chris did at all. The only reason he fought for custody was to get back at his
mother and his mother loved to party so much that she had little time for him,
as well. Lucky kind of felt sorry for his new friend. Lucky had promised Luke he
watch Lulu after school. So, at three the two friends parted and Lucky went back
to the apartment. Lucky was playing with Lu when Luke came home.
“I got a call from school. Why did you skip out?” Luke asked.
“Sarah Webber,” Lucky said coldly.
“What? I thought you liked her. Trouble in the romance department?” Luke asked.
“You are so far behind. I haven't’ seen Sarah all summer. She dumped me when the
prince and her met. She has been taunting me all month about you and mom’s break
up. She hit a sore spot today and I just left to think,” Lucky said.
“What did she say?” Luke asked as he sat down.
“The reason mom slept around on you is because she wasn’t pleased in the
bedroom. She said something else but I don’t want to repeat it,” Lucky said.
“Great girl. I’m not explaining my love life with anyone. Rule, one Lucky. Never
talk about what you do with women to anyone. It stays in the bedroom,” Luke
said.
“I know but it still bothered me. I wouldn’t get so upset, if she didn’t do it
in front of the whole school,” Lucky said.
“I bet. I’m sorry, kiddo. You have been getting a lot of slack from the kids?”
Luke asked.
“Only Sarah. She has been seeing Nikky boy and she said mom and him talked. I
haven’t heard a word from mom. I know why she doesn’t call here but she could at
least come to school and find me. What did I do to her?” Lucky asked.
“Nothing. Your mother’s problem is hers not yours. I don't’ know but I will find
out. I promised Justus I would stay away from her and Stefan. I will ask him to
talk to her. I want know myself. I might be the reason behind her avoiding you.
I haven’t let her see Lu and she might be taking it out on you. You're smart
enough not to trust Cassadine but Lulu is too trusting and I’m not taking the
risk of getting her hurt,” Luke said.
“You don’t have to. She doesn’t want to see me. I don’t want to see her,” Lucky
said and got up to call Liz to see what he missed.
Liz was in her room working on her homework. She got grounded for her little
stunt at school and she wasn’t surprised that no one was going to listen to her
side of things. The phone rang and Mrs. Hardy walked in handed her the cordless
phone. “You have a call from Lucky Spencer. He says you are partners in classes
and I don't want you to fail so you can talk to him. If you need to do work or
anything you have to report to me about where and what you are going to do,”
Mrs. Hardy said and then she left.
Liz put the phone to her ear and asked in a worried tone of voice, “Lucky, are
you all right?”
“Yes. I’m fine Liz. I heard about you being grounded. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean
to get you into trouble,” Lucky said.
“You didn’t do it. Sarah did. I just didn’t get listened to again. I have the
assignment and if want to, we can work on this over the phone. I would be lost
without you,” Liz said.
Lucky smiled. It was nice to be needed. Liz admitted that she just joined the
class to be close to him and she needed a lot of help to keep up. Lucky would
have ditched a lot more if he hadn't realized that she needed him. Lucky and Liz
worked over the phone for about an hour when Luke walked in and said, “You
hungry?”
“Not much. What is for supper?” Lucky asked a little worried about his father’s
cooking.
“I was thinking about going out to eat,” Luke said.
“I don't really feel like it and besides, Liz and I have a lot to work on. She
got grounded because of Sarah and we have to do this over the phone,” Lucky
said.
Luke thought about it and then said, “Give me the phone.” Lucky relented and
handed him the phone. “Liz, sweetheart. Could you give the phone to your
grandmother for a second?”
“Sure?” Liz said very confused and went to find Audrey.
“Yes, Luke?” Audrey said into the phone.
“Audrey, you might not know this but I think there is more to the incident at
school than you realize. Sarah, is seeing Nikolas and I think he fed her a big
line about Lucky. She has been taunting him for a month now. I know you heard
about Laura and I. Lucky skipped school because of it and Liz defended him. I
know hitting her sister might be out of line for you but I think it was very
called for. Sarah said something that really isn’t her business. I would hope
you rethink this grounding and let the kids go to dinner with me,” Luke said.
“What did Sarah say?” Audrey asked.
“She said the reason my wife slept around on me was because of her lack of a
love life at home,” Luke said.
“Oh. I see. You are right, Luke. I think we should rethink this. Liz can go to
supper with you and your family. I’m sorry for my granddaughter’s lack of taste.
I will talk to her as soon as she gets home,” Audrey said.
“Thank you, Mrs. Hardy,” Luke said and hung up the phone.
“Why did you do that?” Lucky asked surprised at his father’s actions.
“I hate seeing you unhappy and who ever this Liz is, I’m grateful. I haven't’
seen you smile in a month,” Luke said.
“Have I been that bad?” Lucky asked.
“Lets just say you've said more to me tonight than you have all month,” Luke
said.
“Sorry about that. It isn’t you but mom,” Lucky said.
“I know and don’t worry about it,” Luke said and they headed to pick up Liz and
get something to eat.
They went to eat at the Outback. Everyone was happy and having fun when Laura
and Amy showed up for supper. Lulu saw her mother and she leaped off her chair
and ran to her. Laura picked her up and held her tight. “Hi, Baby,” Laura said
to her little girl. “How are you?”
“I’m fine, mommy. I missed you. Why haven’t you been around lately?” Lulu said.
Laura looked at Luke and he just glared at her. “I don’t know, baby. I’m working
on it. I even have a room for you at your Aunt Amy’s all ready. As soon as daddy
lets you, then you can come over,” Laura said.
Luke could have killed her for making him the bad guy. Luke took Lu from Laura
and said, “Baby, I want to talk to mommy for a few minutes,” Luke put Lulu by
Lucky and Liz and they walked outside. “You could have least tried to find a
better reason than making me look like a heel,” Luke said as they walked
outside.
“You are a heel. You are keeping me away from my daughter,” Laura said coldly.
“Your daughter? Hey, I didn’t see you even look in Lucky’s direction. You have a
son too or isn’t your heart big enough for more than two kids at once,” Luke
said coldly.
“He can talk to me if he wants too but of course Lucky is your son to the letter
and judges people before he gets all the facts,” Laura said.
“You're the adult in this situation, not Lucky. But then you are good at putting
blame on everyone but yourself,” Luke said.
“Me? What about you? Oh! I forgot, you're perfect or should I say better than
God himself,” Laura said.
Amy walked outside and decided to break the two up before things got worse.
“Laura, lets go. We can go eat somewhere else,” Amy said and started to guide
Laura away.
“I want to say good bye to Lulu,” Laura said.
“No. You did enough damage. I will not let you near her again,” Luke said
coldly.
Amy looked at Luke and pleaded. “Luke, please. I promise it wouldn’t hurt for
her to say good bye. I think it would even make Lulu happy.”
Luke looked at Amy and relented, “All right, but no more promises about seeing
her later and watch what you say about me,” Luke warned to Laura.
Amy smiled and went to get Lulu. She even tired to get Lucky to come out and
talk to his mother but he wouldn’t move. Liz looked at Lucky after Amy left and
said, “Why don’t you go out and talk to her?”
“Liz, my mother could care a less about me,” Lucky said.
“Lucky? Maybe she is too afraid of what you are going to say,” Liz said.
“She isn’t afraid of anything. My mother only cares about herself,” Lucky said,
“I don’t want to talk about her any more. So could we drop this?” Lucky asked.
“Ok, I’ll drop it,” Liz said and she changed the subject to their project.
Mac and Felicia couldn’t help but over hear the teen's conversation. Felicia
leaned against the bar and said, “I think Laura is making a big mistake. She
should at least have said hello or something to Lucky.”
“I know but Luke isn’t helping matters. He is a hard person to deal with on a
good day,” Mac said. Felicia agreed and went to check out the other guests.
