References to Transportation in the 1800s

How Far?

The following table lists some of the towns mentioned in "Here Come the Brides" and their approximate distances and direction from Seattle. In addition, I have found a source that indicates that horses and wagons could expect to travel approximately nine miles per hour. This of course, does not take into account rest time, road conditions, etc. but can be used as a general guideline.

Books about Ships, Seamanship, etc.

- While Captain Hibberd's journeys date later than much of "Here Come The Brides" (1881-1891), he provides very good first hand accounts of his voyages, in the capacities of cabin boy to Master.

Look up ships that had a connection to the Pacific Northwest. Read about life at sea. Learn vocabulary about schooners.
