Breaking out of her trance of happiness, Pepper Ann said, "Kelly, I'm going to the store for a minute. We need some more spaghetti sauce." to her daughter. She pulled on her shoes.
"Craig, please keep an eye on the spaghetti for a minute, okay?" She slammed through the front door. store's only two blocks from here, she thought, I can walk. As Pepper Ann set out down the sidewalk, she could feel her legs stretching. Wow, she thought, it's been a long time since I've walked this long.
After enjoying the birds singing and the stillness of the evening, Pepper Ann began to cross the street. This was not a hard thing, as many of you should know, but some people do not know that sometimes people must cross the street to get to the other side.
Just as Pepper Ann was in the middle of the street, a huge truck came barreling towards her. Being so intent on not stepping on the cracks (PA's childish nature) that she didn't sense it coming. When it was inches away from her body, Pepper Ann glanced up. The truck was coming straight at her!
At the exact same moment, a woman named Nicky Little was walking by. She heard the truck screech, a terrified scream, and dashed out to save the victim. It was part of Nicky's generous nature.
The truck saved just in time to avoid hitting Nicky and the mysterious red-headed woman. Nicky lifted the woman's face up--and saw it was the face of her ex-best friend Pepper Ann Pearson!
"Pepper Ann?"
"Nicky?" they asked at the same time. The two hadn't talked to each other for so long--hadn't seen each other since that day when Pepper Ann had gotten mad at Nicky...
"Pepper Ann? Pepper Ann?" Pepper Ann's eyes snapped open. She heard Nicky Little's shrill voice and looked up. "Nicky---" she tried to speak but it felt like she had two tons of dirt in her mouth.
"You can be mad at me, Pepper Ann. Okay, give it to me straight. I..."
Nicky's sentence was cut off by Pepper Ann leaping up to Nicky and hugging her. "You'remybestfriendIdon'thateyouatallNickyI'msosorry!" She said in one breath. Nicky, taken aback by Pepper Ann's sudden movement, thought for a moment.
"Me too," she agreed, "Whatever you said," and hugged Pepper Ann, too. As the two friends forgave each other, Nicky asked, "What was it like being out cold?" she asked Pepper Ann.
"Oh...." Pepper Ann shrugged. "Nothing important." She grinned. "Now let's go to Greezy & Cheezy for your choice of pizza!" And, putting her free arm around her best friend's shoulders, the two headed off in the sunset--two friends, just goin' for pizza.
