From ABC:
If you were wondering where the idea for "Two Guys, a Girl and
a Pizza Place" came from, you need look no further than the
real-life two guys, the show’s co-creators and co-supervising
producers Rick Wiener and Kenny Schwartz.
Wiener, 30, and Schwartz, 31, came up with the idea for the
show when they were working as writers on "Mad About You."
According to Wiener, he and Schwartz were sitting on his porch
(the real-life inspiration for Berg and Pete’s front stoop),
overlooking California’s Manhattan Beach, and they said, "What
should we write about?" Then they looked at each other, looked
at themselves, and the idea was born. "Mad About You" and
"Two Guys" executive producer Danny Jacobson shepherded
the idea to the studios, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The characters of Berg and Pete are completely fashioned after
Wiener and Schwartz. The more freewheeling Wiener is "Berg"
and the straighter laced Schwartz is "Pete." Beyond the
character similarities, the rest of the show is pretty true-to-life
as well. For one thing, Schwartz actually did work in a Boston
pizza parlor. Berg’s full name, Michael Bergen, is the name of
one of Wiener and Schwartz’ friends. And yes, they do have a
best friend named Sharon.
Weiner and Schwartz began as writer’s assistants on "Mad
About You" before becoming members of that show’s writing
staff. "Two Guys" marks the first time Wiener and Schwartz
have worked as a writing team and as producers.
Even with all their new-found success, Wiener’s still been
known to do a bit of slumming. Last summer, he took a job as a
production assistant on a feature film. "But you’re a producer," a
friend of his said, as he was lifting crates and moving boxes.
Wiener, however, saw the job as a golden opportunity to get
experience working on a feature film.
So we just had to ask them the burning question: will there ever
be romance between Sharon and one of the two guys? Wiener
and Schwartz both answered with a resolute no. They believe it
would ruin the chemistry of the show.
Wiener and Schwartz do hang out with the stars who play their
fictional counterparts, Ryan Reynolds and Richard Ruccolo.
In fact, the cast seems to gather pretty regularly at Wiener’s
beach pad and they even took a trip to Vegas together recently.
So, maybe they should think of changing the title to "Four Guys
…"
