Born on the 4th of July by Alison

"So Dawson, what did you rent?" Joey asked him flopping down on his bed for movie night.

"Well, in honor of both holidays tomorrow I rented Sixteen Candles and Born on the 4th of July. Molly Ringwald or Tom Cruise first?"

"Tom Cruise. I'm not in a brat packy mood yet."

"You got it, anything for the birthday girl that I love."

"Dawson, my birthday isn't until tomorrow."

"Not true, it's 12:08, you are officially 16! Happy Birthday baby!" Dawson said as he gave her a quick kiss.

They sat down on the bed and snuggled close as a picture of Tom Cruise appeared on the screen.

"So Jo, what do you want to do for your birthday?"

"As always, nothing. Everyone is too busy dealing with the 4th of July and I like it that way. I wouldn't like the preferential treatment."

"OK, I'll just call Pacey and cancel that major party I planned..." he said jokingly.

"You are so dead!" she said as she began play fighting with him. They rolled around on the bed for a little while until Joey finally ended up on top of him and pinned him.

"Gotcha!" she said as she gave him a quick kiss declaring victory and a truce.

They resumed watching the movie and fell asleep as usual.

They were awakened the next morning with breakfast in bed, compliments of Mrs. Leery for the birthday girl. She had made Joey's favorite, blueberry pancakes. Dawson and Joey ate while watching the 4th of July parade and when they were finished Dawson got up and walked over to his desk. He reached into a drawer and pulled out a small, neatly wrapped present.

"What's this?" she asked him not really expecting an answer.

"Just open it!" he replied anxiously. She nervously tore open the paper and saw a small green velvet box. She opened it and saw a small ring inside. She removed it from the box and saw that it was a heart with a small diamond in it. A tear fell from the corner of her eye.

"Oh Dawson..."

"Look at the inscription." he said interrupting her.

She looked at it and saw a very familiar phrase. Inside the ring said "D + J I love thee". It was almost identical to the ring from Romeo and Juliet.

"Will you put it on for me?" Joey asked him, shaking from the shock and the pleasure.

"Sure." he said as he gently slid the ring onto her fourth finger before softly kissing her.

"Thank you Dawson. I love it. I love you."

"I know, I love you too"

As they began to kiss they heard a noise. Someone was climbing up the ladder. They pretended not to notice and resumed their oral exercises.

"Aww Guys! Will you give it a break for one second? The body can only live so long without air!" came the familiar voice of Pacey as he climbed through the window.

"You are just jealous!" Joey told him jokingly.

"Anyway, what do you want Pacey?" Dawson asked trying to avoid the insult war that was about to ensue.

"Well, I came for several reasons. First, I came to wish everyone a happy 4th of July. Second, I came to wish Joey a happy Sweet Sixteen. Third, I came to deliver her present since I knew she wouldn't want a party. And fourth, I came to see if we were still having our annual tradition tonight."

"Well, thank you for the first 3 Pacey, and as far as I'm concerned, we better have our tradition!" Joey said as she began unwrapping Pacey's present.

"It's not gonna explode is it Pacey?" she asked him with a smile. He didn't respond but just smiled back. She finished opening the package and saw a picture frame containing a picture of her sitting in between Dawson and Pacey on Dawson's roof. It was the fourth of July, they were about 10. Sitting in front of them was a birthday cake for Joey and Pacey had a handful of it in his hand, ready to smash it into Joey's face. They were all wearing their matching softball uniforms, and had won the championships that day. Joey laughed as she remembered that day. That was the day our tradition started, she thought. From that day on, every fourth of July the 3 of them would sit on Dawson's roof with a birthday cake and watch the fireworks. The cake fight was optional. Dawson and Pacey looked at the photo too and both laughed.

"We on for tonight?" Pacey asked.

"Yep, I'm getting the cake this afternoon." Dawson said.

They agreed to meet on Dawson's roof at about 8.

They all went their seperate ways to prepare for the small party and were having a great day. Joey celebrated her birthday with Bessie, Bodie and Alex and was greatful for the attention. She didn't get a lot with a new baby around. She glanced down at the ring on her finger and smiled. Dawson loved her, it was the best birthday ever.

At about five 'till eight Joey climbed the ladder to Dawson's roof and saw that Dawson was already there with the cake. It was white and had Happy Sweet Sixteen Chloe written in pink icing. Joey looked down at the cake confused.

"Uh Dawson. Who the hell is Chloe?"

"Damn bakery people. You are lucky they got the happy sweet sixteen part right and it doesn't say happy meet sixty chloe!" he said with a laugh.

"It doesn't matter, it's the thought that counts." she said as she wrapped her arms around him in preperation for a kiss. As they were kissing Pacey came up to the roof.

"God! Don't you two ever take a rest??" Noticing the cake he added, "Hey Chloe, I was thinking that you, Austin and Ben might want to go camping next week. Interested?"

"Well, Lacey, I can only speak for me, JOEY, but I'd love to. Austin?" she asked looking at Dawson.

"Sure, sounds great. But, you would have to talk to JEN!" They shared a laugh and began eating the cake waiting for the fireworks to start.

A few minutes later sparks began bursting from the sky. This was what the 3 friends lived for, they loved fireworks. They watched them in silence for a while before noticing some music coming from the porch. On the porch Mr and Mrs Leery and Bessie and Bodie were dancing to oldies on the radio. The song ended and they began toasting the holiday with glasses of champagne, oblivious to the fact that the 3 friends were watching them. Dawson, Pacey and Joey looked at each other and burst out laughing.

"When did they get so weird?" Pacey asked.

"I'm not sure, but I'm afraid to question it!" Dawson said with a laugh. They went back to watching the fireworks.

"Well, I think I better get going before Deputy Doug comes looking for me." Pacey said. He gave a quick hug to Joey wishing her happy birthday again.

He did his "manly goodbye" with Dawson which consisted of a small touching of their hands in the form of a highfive/handshake. Joey noticed and couldn't help but smile at their attempts at masculinity. She and Dawson cuddled on the roof underneath a blanket enjoying being together and happy.

"Thank you for the perfect birthday Dawson, I loved every minute of it." she said looking at him adoringly.

"No prob Joey, anything for you. I'm glad you liked it."

"I love you."

"I love you too Jo." Dawson said as he pulled her close and they kissed underneath the stars on America's birthday.
