Summer's End by Emily
Part Two in the Series

(a little over a month since my last story Summer Lovin -LABOR DAY)

Joey was comfortably sprawled out on her bed, reading her last summer reading books, when the phone rang. Annoyed that she was interrupted, she groggily got off her bed and picked up the phone,

"Hello?"

"JOEY!" All of her annoyance suddenly rushed out of her body, when she heard the voice.

"Dawson? What's up?"

"Do you know what tomorrow is?"

"Ummm, Monday?" Joey sat back on her bed and awaited the plan that was about to be presented, whatever it may be.

"Exactly, the first Monday of.....?"

"Of....September?"

"Therefore making it..."

"Labor Day!"

"Good, took you long enough." Dawson said jokingly.

"Yah, well not everyone can be as smart and fast as you!" Joey returned sarcastically. "So, again I ask, what's up?"

"C'mon, you know! What happens every Labor Day?"

Joey was becoming exasperated, but she answered, "Barbecue at your house, but no can do this year Dawson."

Dawson's voice dropped, "Why not?"

"Bessie and Bodie are keeping the Icehouse opened for the holiday and----"

"You're not working are you?" Dawson interrupted.

"'Fraid I am."

"But....I haven't seen you in such a long time!" Dawson's voice suddenly became serious.

"Listen I'll try to get out of it, but right now the outlook doesn't look too good."

"Well, okay. But listen, I have to get to work now and I'm doing the closing, so I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Hopefully."

"Okay, bye Jo."

"Bye Dawson, I'm sorry about tomorrow."

"It's okay." Dawson said slowly. "Love you."

Joey gave a soft laugh, "Love you too. Bye." Joey hung up the phone, and tried to devise a plan to get out of work the next day.

(The Next Day)

"But BES-SIE! It's tradition! C'mon...I mean, really, how many people are you expecting on Labor Day? Everyone's enjoying the outdoors, their last days of freedom before school....PLEEEAAAASSSEE?!?!" Joey begged. It was early in the morning, but Joey figured that if she wanted to get out of work, she would have to start early. She could see her sister starting to give in, but didn't want to get her hopes up.

Bessie stared at her thoughtfully, "Ugh, okay. But I hope you realize that the ONLY reasons I'm giving into this little barbecue is because: 1-We HAVE been doing it since we were little, and 2- I REALLY don't want to hear you whine and complain about this the whole ENTIRE day!" Bessie shrugged as she turned to go to the kitchen.

"Ah, YES!" Joey squealed as she hugged her sister. "Thanks Bess! Wait, now what should I bring...you know food wise? Can you make that pasta stuff?" Bessie shot her a look. "Thanks! You're the best!" Joey ran back to her room before Bessie could say anything else.

(Later that day)

Dawson just finished putting on his swim trunks when there was a knock on the door.

"Yah, it's open!" He turned back to his closet, thinking it was just his dad telling him to hurry and join the party. He shifted the closet door slightly so he could see whoever it was come in the door. Joey walked in timidly.

"Dawson, where are you?" She couldn't see Dawson "hiding" behind the door. She slowly walked to the bed, her back to the closet.

"BOO!!!!" Dawson screamed while grabbing her from behind. She jumped and let out a screech. When she turned around to see what it was that had attacked her, she gave an annoying push and a glare.

"Damnit Dawson!"Joey tried to regain her composure, not noticing the long stare he was giving her. ' Wow she looks gorgeous.' he thought as he stared. She was wearing a simple black bikini and a long wrap around sheer emerald green skirt. He reconized the skirt as a gift his mother gave her for her sixteenth birthday. Her birthday was in the winter, but Joey had mentioned to Mrs. Leery how much she liked it. Her hair was in a high ponytail, a very infrequent hairstyle she used, she said she always felt ditsy while wearing it, but obviously the holiday was an exception.

"Dawson, hello? Are you there Dawson?" Joey was waving her hand over his face, he was motionless. She snapped her fingers, which did the trick. He looked at her and smiled.

"You made it."

"Yah, I just explained HOW I made it, but you were off in La-La land." Joey stated with a smile.

"Well I'm glad you could make it." He hugged her close to his body and gave her a soft kiss.

"Mmmm, so am I." She gave him another soft kiss, then continued, "You don't know what I went through to come here. I started at Bessie at like nine o'clock this morning, I was going for the annoy-her-to-hell-and- then-she'll- give-in trick. I even got her to make some pasta salad." She smiled proudly up at Dawson.

"Well cmon, Pacey and Jen are all ready out back---"

"Yah I know Dawson, they were the ones who told me you were still up here."

"Well, let's go." Dawson wrapped his arm around her waist and escorted her to the back where the party was going strong.

The day had gone by fast and the starry night was all ready up in the sky. The day had been filled with eating, talking, swimming in the creek (yuck!), and just lying around, talking.

"Ugh, I HOPE junior year is better than sophomore year." Pacey said while looking up at the stars.

"I KNOW it will be." Dawson said, acting natural.

Jen turned her head slightly to look at him, "How do you know?"

"Because." He smiled and wrapped his arm around Joey, which she gladly snuggled in to.

"Well as sad as I am having to admit this, but we have school in a couple of days, and I have to get home before my curfew."
