Virtual Flowers by Katy
Part Six in the Series
I memorize every line
And I kiss the name that you sign
And, darling, then I read again right from the start
Love letters straight from your heart
-Elvis Presley
Joey broke away in time to see Pacey driving away. "Oh god," she said,
running her fingers through her hair. That did not just happen."
Dawson looked crushed. "What?" he said.
Joey looked at Dawson. "It's not you...," she said.
Dawson looked away. He knew what was coming. "Here it comes..." he said.
"But," Joey said, "I like Pacey...a lot. And I can't just ignore that
because you come snapping your fingers. I won't do this again, Dawson."
Dawson looked confused. "Again?" he said, "but you never liked m..ooh."
He suddenly realized why she had never liked Jen, why she was always so
jealous and moody, at least recently.
"Yes Dawson," Joey said, "I did have a crush on you, but whatever I felt,
that's it. A crush. And I'm not going to standby and watch you pine for the
next Jen Lindley. Things change. I've changed, and you should too. Evolve."
Dawson didn't know what to say as Joey walked off to go after Pacey.
"Things just get more complicated by the day," Dawson said in amazement.
*****
Pacey ignored both Joey and Dawson for the next few days. In fact, he
spent all of his time with Jen, which was surprising, since they weren't
exactly close. Joey avoided pretty much everyone, preferring to spend her time
in the computer lab, working on an internet project for a class. And Dawson
sat alone at his own table, working on movie scripts.
"Alright Pacey,' Jen said one day, "what is going on? No one's talking to
anyone, the group's been dissolved, what happened?"
Pacey's eyes darkened. "Jen," he said, "I like you and I'd like to be
friends, but there are some things I'm not comfortable talking to you about
yet. It doesn't mean I won't ever, it just means I'm not quite ready."
After questioning him a bit, Jen gave up, deciding it was better to let
him work out whatever was troubling him.

Joey rechecked her letter for the millionth time. Everything had to be
worded properly. Checking her watch, she saw that she only had 5 minutes of
lunch left. She'd better hurry.
Logging into a picture server, she chose a picture of a bouquet of roses.
Attaching it to her letter, she pressed send and off it went.
Joey picked up her things as the bell rang. "I hope this works," she
said.
*****
Pacey got home, immediately going into his room, so he could escape the
Stepford family. Deciding he should check his e-mail, he logged into his AOL
name, PaceMan16. The "you've got mail" sound played, telling him that (duh) he
had mail.
Clicking the little mailbox icon, he saw that he had 3 letters. One was
from his penpal, one was junk mail, and the other was from someone named
Juliet2770. Kind of curious to see who it was, he double clicked on the
letter.
A letter with a file attachment popped up, and Pacey's throat choked as
he read the letter.
Pacey,
I know I've hurt you, I didn't mean to. I didn't kiss Dawson, he kissed
me. I broke away away immediately, but you were gone. All this week you've
ignored me, so I couldn't explain what happened.
I know this letter isn't poetry, far from it. I've never been good with
stuff like that. But I know how I feel. I love you.
Joey
I love you. She had said I love you.
Looking at the file, he wondered if he should click it. What could it be?
The filename didn't tell him anything, it just said topacey.gif.
Figuring it couldn't hurt to download it, he pressed download now. As the
file came out, a picture of a bouquet of roses came out.
Pacey was touched. No one had ever given him flowers and a love letter,
at least not a serious one. He bent over and kissed the screen, right over
Joey's name.
Wondering if she was online, he pulled up the "Locate Member Online box
and typed in her name.
*****
Busting in through Dawson's window, Joey announced, "Move it Dawson, my
aol screenname is on your account and I need to check it."
Dawson didn't argue with her, he wasn't stupid. Standing over her
shoulder as she logged on, he wondered what the heck she was up to.
Once she was online and the annoying "welcome" sound went off, she pulled
down locate member online. Typing in PaceMan16, she pressed ok. A little box
came up that sad "PaceMan16 is online, but not currently in a chat area." A
little box saying IM, standing for instant message was at the bottom. Clicking
it, she began typing out an im for him.
Before she could send it, an IM from Pacey appeared on her screen. It
read "I love you too."
Joey about cried with joy. Dawson's throat choked. He had officially lost
her. Although, technically he never HAD her.
Joey began typind out "I'm so glad you said that. I've bee.." Another IM
popped up.
This IM read "I love you, but I can't be with you now. I can't be sure
that you love me with all of your heart, or if you're afraid of losing someone
again."
Joey didn't know how to respond. Before she could type anything, another
IM popped up, reading "My cousin Willow has invited me to come live there for
a while. I think my parents pushed her parents to invite me, but I'm going to
go live out there. I need to get away from some things. Besides, I love Willow
like a sister, and I'd love to see her."
Joey began crying. She typed "Pacey, wait." on the im, but when she sent
it, a message popped up saying "PaceMan16 is no longer signed on." Looking at
the message brought fresh tears to her eyes, and she didn't know how to stop
them.
The End (or is it?)
