Pacey Witter's Last Stand
by Katy

"And I'd give up forever to touch you
Cuz I know that you'd feel me some how
You're the closest to Heaven, that I've ever been
And I don't want to go home right now."
-Goo Goo Dolls "Iris"

Pacey signed off and put his head down on the keyboard. That had been the hardest moment of his life. But he had to do it. It was time to start over.

The phone rang and Pacey picked it up. "Hello?" he growled into it.

"Pacey!" came the voice of his cousin Willow, "I'm glad I got in touch with you. You're coming tomorrow right?"

"Yeah," he said, "I leave at three in the afternoon. I'll be there by six."

"Great!" she said, "I can't wait for you to meet my friends Mary and Sam. You'll love them! Anyways, I have to go. Have fun tonight, but not too much fun. We want you out here alive."

Pacey couldn't help but smile. Willow was such a bubbly effervescent girl. She could cheer you up just be talking. Granted she talked all the time. Literally. Even in her sleep she didnt' shut up.

Pacey looked at the clock. Four o'clock. Still time to have one last hurrah. Picking up the phone, he called Dawson.

Joey hadn't said anything to Dawson after Pacey told her he was leaving. Dawson was her best friend, but this problem needed a girl's touch. So she went to Jen's. Jen and her weren't exactly buddy buddy, but Joey knew that Jen could probably confort her more.

Joey sat there and cried while Jen dished out cookie dough ice cream and her own heartbreak tales. Seeing Joey needed drastic cheering up, Jen came up with the idea.

"Why don't we go do something tonight?" Jen said, "One last fiesta. It'll take your mind off Pacey, if only for a night."

Joey sniffed. She didn't want to, but then again, it couldn't hurt. "Why not," Joey said, "Things can only get better, right?"

Dawson and Pacey drove around for a while, mainly talking in the car. Let me rephrase that. Pacey talked. Dawson couldn't get a word in edgewise.

Finally, Dawson and Pacey stopped at the theater to see a movie. Remember, this is Capeside, there's not much else to do except stalk Nellie. The only movie playing was Armageddon. 'Great,' Pacey thought, 'A movie about a huge disaster and a romance between a beautiful willowy girl and a tall dark haired guy. Damn, this reminds me of Joey. Then again, lint reminds me of Joey.'

Dawson and Pacey bought their tickets, not noticing the blond and the brunette that had walked up behind them.

*****

Jen and Joey bought their tickets to Armageddon. Jen hoped that a movie with Ben Affleck would take Joey's mind off Pacey.

Fat chance. Armageddon only reminded Joey more of Pacey. The tall dark- haired guy with the gorgeous smile. The beautiful romantic "animal crackers" scene. Everything.

Neither Pacey and Dawson nor Joey and Jen knew the others were there. They sat just seats away, not noticing each other.

Pacey watched the scene where Ben Affleck was leaving and was singing to Liv Tyler. The scene clicked in his brain. He had an idea.
