Carolina On My Mind by Katy
Part Five in the Series

I, Katy, agree that "Carolina on My Mind" can only be posted in the Weekly Fanfiction Center during the week of 8/9 under the topic "Road Trips"

Disclaimer: Don't own DC, never did. Also in this case, I don't own Danny, Darrien, or Liz, since they are my friends. Although I do own me, Katy, and I have for many years now. Forgive me for throwing me and my friends in, but Liz and them love to see themselves in my writing. And to Liz, Darrien, and Danny, if you read this, which you most likely will, I've put in a few inside jokes that I hope you get.

"Baby, what do you say we just get lost
Leave this one horse town like two rebels without a cause

I've got people in Boston, Angel Daddy is still in Des Moines
We can pack up tomorrow, tonight let's flip a coin

Heads Carolina, tails California
Somwhere greener, somewhere warmer
Up in the mountains, down by the ocean
Where, it don't matter as long as we're going
Somewhere together, I've got a quarter
Heads Carolina, tails California

We can throw what we own in the back of a U-Haul van
A couple modern day Moses, searching for the promise land
We can go for a hundred miles before we stop for gas
We can drive for a day and then we'll take a look at the map

Heads Carolina, tails California
Somewhere greener, somewhere warmer
Up in the mountains, down by the ocean
Where, it don't matter as long as we're going
Somewhere together, I've got a quarter
Heads Carolina, tails California"
-Jo Dee Messina "Heads Carolina, Tails California"

Pacey sat there, listening to Jo Dee Messina singing about getting out of town. Boy, would he like to do that. Get out of town...go somewhere else for a change...just him and Joey.

Pacey laughed to himself. Wouldn't that just give everyone a shock. Two people who had never gotten along just suddenly leaving on a romantic road trip. Joey would think he was crazy...crazy and romantic.

They had kissed for hours and hours that night at the Ice House. Then they had stayed up all night, just holding each other. It was the most magical night of Pacey's life.

Pacey reached in his pocket and pulled out a quarter. Smiling to himself, he flipped it. Glancing at what it had landed on, Pacey grabbed his jacket and his wallet, before heading out to go hotwire his dad's car.

Jen sat at the bar of the Ice House while Joey told her about the night Pacey and Joey had shared.

"....and then we kissed," Joey said, involuntarily touching her lips.

Jen took a bite of her ice cream. "How long?" she asked

"Five hours," Joey said.

"Tongue or no tongue?" Jen asked

"Both," Joey said, giggling.

Jen raised her eyebrows, impressed. "Sparks?" she asked.

"50 foot flames!" Joey said excitedly, "it was the most amazing kiss I've ever had!"

Jen and Joey laughed as Pacey walked up. "Talking about me again?" he said, wiggling his eyebrows, "control yourselves ladies. Joey, I need to talk to you."

*****

"We're WHAT?!" Joey said, putting her hands on her hips.

"We're going to South Carolina. Just you, me, and Pacey's love mobile," Pacey said, gesturing to his dad's car.

"Pacey, you cannot be serious," Joey said, "we can't just run away from everything."

"I'm not suggesting that we run away," Pacey said, "I'm merely suggesting we take a break for a few days. Come on, we still have two weeks vacation before we go back to school. Let's just be spontaneous and do something romantic and unpredictable."

Joey looked doubtful. "I dunno..." she said.

Pacey sighed. Time to pull out plan number two. Grabbing Joey and dragging her to the car, he called, "Bessie! I'm kidnapping your sister! I am taking her to my Parisian palace, where she will be my love slave for the rest of her life."

Bessie laughed. "Have fun!" she called.

Bodie raised his eyebrows suggestively. "Play safe," he said.

"Bodie!" Joey called, laughing as Pacey lifted her up and set her in the car.

Dawson walked up to the Ice House carrying a bouquet of flowers. Today was the day he told Joey that he had strong feelings for her. Ever since he had seen Joey and Pacey kissing he had felt this strange jealousy rising within him. He wanted to be the one Joey kissed, the one she had feelings for.

Dawson walked up to Bessie and asked, "Bessie, have you seen Joey."

"Yes, she just left with Pacey," Bessie said, "he said something about kidnapping her and a road trip."

"WHAT?!" Dawson said. He turned around in time to see Pacey's car pulling out of the Ice House parking lot.

"Jo!" he called running to it, but it was too late. They were gone.

*****

"And right now they've stopped at a little overlook," Dawson said to Jen, "and he's putting his arm around her. She's slowly leaning into him. She turns her head so that her hair falls gently over her shoulder, grazing his neck. She smiles that little half-smile of hers. Her reaches over and brushes a strand of hair out of her face. She leans towards him, he leans towards her. Their lips meet and...God I can't take it!"

Jen rolled her eyes. "Let me get this straight," she said, "Joey has been in love for you for months, and you don't notice until she is finally moving on to someone who's been pining for her?"

"I know," Dawson said, "it's horrible of me, but I just can't take it. I wonder what they're doing now..."

*****

It was Saturday afternoon. Even though it was December, it was still warm down in Columbia, South Carolina. Sandy's Ice Cream Parlor was nearly deserted except for four friends, two girls and two guys, who were arguing loudly.

One of the girls was a teenage girl of about 16. She had shoulder-length dark brown waves and deep brown eyes. She was very tall and curvy, about 5'10" and towered over the other girl and one of the boys. The other girl was about 5'8", very slender for her age, with amber curls which hung past her waist. She had electric green eyes that looked very soft when she was happy, very dark when she was angry.

One of the boys was over six feet, with dark hair, and very developed muscles. The other boy had sandy blond hair and blue eyes.

The two girls were talking animatedly about some teen angst drama on the WB, while the boys just looked bored.

"Do you girls talk about anything besides Carson's Pond, or whatever it's called," the dark-haired boy asked.

"Shut up Darrien," the girls said simultaneously while the sandy haired boy laughed.

The conversation came to a halt as the door opened. A tall dark-haired boy and a tall-darked haired girl came in, laughing. The two boys at the table nearly choked on their sundae's as they looked at the girl. "She is fine," the dark-haired boy said.

The girl with the amber hair gave the boy a twice-over, then turned to her friend. "He is so cute!" she said.

The dark-haired girl looked at him. "I guess," she said, "I'm more into blonds myself."

The girl with the amber haired giggled and whispered, "right, that's why you have that major thing for..." She was cut off by a nasty glance from her friend.

The boy and the girl looked around and chose a table near the four friends. The girl turned and smiled at the four friends. "Hi," she said, "I'm Joey. This is Pacey. Who are ya'll?"

The sandy-haired boy smiled kindly. "I'm Danny," he said, "this is Darrien," he said gesturing to the other guy, "Liz," he said gesturing to the tall girl with the shoulder length brown hair, "and Katy," he said, gesturing to the girl with amber hair."

"Nice to meet you," Pacey said, smiling broadly at the two girls. Joey saw this and elbowed him. "Ouch," he said, rubbing his side, "keep your hands off the merchandise."

"Are you guys from Columbia?" Darrien asked, his eyes on Joey.

"No, actually, we're from Massachusetts," Pacey said, jealous of the way this guy was looking at Joey. Joey smiled. Now Pacey was the jealous one.

"What brings you to Columbia?" Liz asked, curiously. Liz had always been curious, and was a little distrusting of strangers.

"We're seeking adventure," Pacey said.

Katy laughed. "In South Carolina?" she said, "You should have gone to New York. The most major thing to happen here recently was the Okra Strut over in Irmo."

Joey and Pacey looked at each other. "Compared to Capeside," Joey said, "that's major."

"If you guys were looking for excitement," Danny said, "you could come with us down in Five Points tonight. That's the place to be on Saturdays. You just have to be careful, it brings all sorts of characters out. Most of them are just college and high school kids looking for party, but we get a lot of drunks too."

"Sounds great," Pacey said, "where should we meet you?"

"How about outside of Rafters?" Liz said, "That's one of the clubs down there. Tonight is teen night down in Five Points, so we can go anywhere."

"Sounds great," Pacey said, "We'll see you there."

*****

Pacey and Joey showed up at Rafters that night, ready to have their night on the town. Joey was in a little red dress that she had picked up at the mall, and Pacey was in khakis and a shirt that he had brought.

After waiting for a couple of minutes, a white jeep roared down the road and pulled into one of the rapidly filling parking spaces. Katy and her friends hopped out of the car. Danny cracked his neck. "That is the last time I let you drive me anywhere, Katy. I'd be safer walking down the middle of the interstate than with you behind the wheel."

"Bite me," Katy said, elbowing her best friend.

Darrien and Danny were dressed casual, in jeans and t-shirts. Liz was in black hiphuggers, plat and a halter top. Katy was in her all-time favorite outfit. A faux leather skirt, white tank top and her leather jacket that she had gotten from a thrift store.

"Who's ready to par-tay?" Liz asked in her full cheerleader spirit.

*****

The night had gone well, with the six of them club-hopping all night long. Pacey and Joey had learned a lot about their new friends. For example, Danny wanted to join the military when he turned 18. He loved studying history, especially military history. Him and Katy had been good friends for ages, and knew practically everything about each other. Darrien was a football player, flirtacious, very muscular, and a class clown. He had a major thing for some girl named Shainna, and Liz was forever teasing him about it. Katy was a flirt too, and her goal in life was to either be a model or a fashion designer. She was obsessed with fashion, and it showed in the way she knew the names of practically every fashion designer around. Liz was hyper and bubbly, obviously a cheerleader. She wasn't as big a flirt as her friends, but had had a few boyfriends, all serious ones.

When the night was over, they all went to hang at Katy's house. Liz and Darrien had a fight over whether to watch sports or Buffy, while Danny and Katy were on a mission for jellybeans and coke.

Sometime around 11:30, Pacey and Joey made their exit. After exchanging addresses and phone numbers, they left, heading back for Capeside.

*****

Dawson paced around in Joey's front lawn. She was supposed to be home today.

Dawson heard Pacey's car pull up, and Joey hopped out. "Joey," he said, rushing to her, "Where have you been?"

Joey shrugged. She didn't feel like explaining herself, especially not to Dawson. "Out," she said. She tried to push by him, but he grabbed her and kissed her on the lips.

Pacey's jaw dropped as he saw them kiss. Upset and hurt, he hit the gas and flew out of the driveway, afraid to see anymore.
