In honor of the summer of comet movies, heeeere’s:

Deep Impact by Mattie

If you haven’t yet seen Armageddon, or Deep Impact, this contains mild spoilers (author’s note:I hated Armageddon, it was on of THE worst movies I’ve seen? Anyone agree with me?Please email me, we’re a minority and need to stick together.Oh, yeah, I loved Deep Impact.Oh, and no one sue me for this or anything, please?)

Joey and Dawson creakily climbed up the ladder into Dawson’s bedroom. When they reached the top they fell to the floor.
“I see why leather isn’t “the fabric of our lives”” Dawson commented.
“I have never taken that long to climb that ladder” Joey moaned, easing herself into a standing position. She failed and fell onto the bed. She and Dawson sat in silence.
“Dawson”Joey said meekly. “Can you do me a favor?”
“If you ask nicely.”
“ok....this sounds really bad...but I can’t stand these pants. Could you...help me get them off?” Joey’s face was a color best described as Tomato. Dawson saw this was hard for her tried to joke.
“Sorry, I prefer strippers who do all the work themselves.” Joey threw a pillow at Dawson.
“Your loss.”
“ok,ok.” Dawson helped Joey out of the tight leather pants, but not without embarrassed looks and a complete avoidance of eye contact.
“Gosh, Dawson, am I really that hard on the eyes?”
“Softer than goosedown, baby” Dawson said in his worst Australian accent.
“Okay,so does that mean I can borrow some sweats?”
“Anything, just don’t make me look at those Winnie the Pooh underwear.”
“Dawson, I remember your superman briefs. Don’t start.” Dawson smiled and shut up.
Finally, they were both comfortable and had lay down to sleep. Dawson rolled over to kiss Joey good night and hit the remote control with his foot. The TV came to life.
“....plant life will be extinct within three weeks, animal life within three months.” The solemn looking man on the screen paused. “The comets are scheduled to strike on August 15th. Those preselected will be notified by phone tonight. A random drawing to select one million citizens will be held on August 13th. There will be no panic, prices will be frozen. At this time, we have only one method of preventing this disaster. The Titan missiles, launched by both Russia and The US, will be released on august 14th. We have the greatest confidence in the technology used. If they should fail, impact will occur at 4:57 pm ,. August 15th. Good luck to you all.”
Dawson shakily reached for the remote and switched the TV off.
Hearts racing, they stared at each other in silence. There was nothing to be said.

***meanwhile, next door, ***

Jen pressed her hand against Pacey’s chest and leaned against him as they kissed in the darkness. Pacey leaned forward and kissed Jen with an intensity Jen recognized from their kisses in the library and on Dawson’s camera.
*he’s a great kisser* Jen reflected. *And I’ve kissed a lot of guys..hold* Jen sprang back from the kiss with a horrified look on her face. *I’m not doing this again. This is not New York*
”Look, Pacey, could you please...leave? I need some time to think or whatever” Jen said angrily as she pushed him out the door. With a confused look on his face, he left. Jen hoped he realized she was angry at herself, not him.

****Meanwhile, next door****

Joey’s shocked sobs came in quiet gasps. Dawson clung to her with a painfully strong grip. Dawson turned the TV back on, hoping and praying that it had been some sort of sick joke. Color flickered on to the screen as a tape ejected. Joey shot up from her position on the bed and grabbed it.
“Deep Impact?” She said quietly, her voice still thick with hysterics.
“I told you to go see this, Dawson, if you’d listened to me, we would never have been through this, I told you, I told you!I TOLD YOU!” Joey was screaming tearily.
Dawson, still rattled from their supposed death sentence, "So it’s all my fault, huh? That you wanted to see that piece of crap movie Armageddon??Instead of this?! If you weren’t so clingy maybe I would have gone to see it by myself. But nooo..we had to see the Horse Whisperer! If were gonna place blame here, I think it should be yours.”
Stunned , Joey collapsed on the bed and began to cry. Dawson was suddenly calm.
“Jo, Jo, please don’t cry, please Jo, you mean so much to me.I would never, never try to hurt you, I was just carried away. And you know I really liked The Horse Whisperer.”
Dawson eased himself onto the bed next to Joey and tentatively put his arms around her. She looked up into his eyes with a quavering smile.
“Liar.” A comical look of guilt crossed Dawson’s expression. He leaned over and kissed Joey. She reached around his neck to massage the tense muscles of his neck. He grinned and ran his hands through her hair.

Several minutes later, they were somewhat more horizontal. If they had been playing baseball, they would have been trying to steal third base. Trying. Joey sat up, forcing Dawson upright as well and bringing to him the realization that his pants pockets were inexplicably located nearer his ankles than his waist. he turned red.
“Jo, what’s wrong?”
“ Dawson, it’s a proven fact that people are very..”She blushed “aroused after life threatening situations. This may just be a reaction, not something we’re ready for.”
‘Joey, if I knew I had only three months left on this earth, this is something I would do without hesitation.”
“me too, Dawson, but don’t you see? We’re still embarrassed by this. And, according to Jen’s Seventeen magazines, that’s a sure sign we aren’t ready. And I know I’m not ready if my..partner...is unsure of me or himself. I hope you feel the same way.”
“You’re right, Jo. Thanks for reminding me I’m more parts romantic guy than horny teenager. But, can we just go to sleep?I’m exhausted.”
“Thanks for understanding, Dawson. I knew you wouldn’t want to without some thought. You’re the best. Good night.”
“Good night, Jo.” Dawson kissed her one last time. As he lay thinking about the things that almost happen between him and his best friend, not to mention his girlfriend, he was very confused.
“Jo, you read Seventeen?!!?”
“Yup”Joey said sleepily. Dawson decided to ask her about it in the morning.

****meanwhile, next door...****

Jen was glad she’d decided to stop the spur of the moment thing with Pacey, but she was upset at herself for even starting, and for driving him away so rudely. As she lay trying to sleep, she could barely keep herself from crying.
*What if I ruined my chances with a guy who was quickly becoming my closest friend? And what is I’ve ruined his trust, and Gram’s trust, and my trust in myself.*
“You are never going to get any sleep this way”She said aloud, firmly. Jen got up and walked to her bag of movies from the video store- five videos. five dollars, five days.
She chose the one most likely to completely remove her from her troubles-Armageddon. The only reason she hadn’t seen the summer’s biggest box-office hit was because she was so depressed over Dawson and Joey’s togetherness. Now that she was over Dawson, it was perfect.

It was almost 4 am when the end credits rolled by on the screen. Jen sighed and rubbed her eyes sleepily. Besides the complete lack of plot line and/or cinematic value, The movie did have its good points. The cute guy that kept coming back from the dead.
*He should have been a goner, but he wasn’t. He kept on trying, and ended up with the person he loved and the chance for a normal life. Maybe,* thought Jen
*I just need a little more faith in myself and mankind.
*Jen felt much better except for one thing:Pacey. *I don’t know what he thinks of me now.*She thought remorsefully. Then, she stopped herself.
*Trust, Jennifer, Trust. Just because other people hurt you and didn’t believe in you in the past means that no one ever will. That includes yourself. So make amends and get on with your life.*
Jen picked up the phone and dialed Pacey’s number, knowing that it was too late but not really caring.
“hello?”A groggy voice said after a few rings.
“Pacey, this is Jen. Listen....”

*** Meanwhile, next door***

It was 4 am. Joey stared at the ceiling unable to sleep. She turned over and realized that Dawson was doing the same thing.
“Dawson”She called softly.
‘”Hey..you awake, too?”he answered.
“Can’t sleep- I keep thinking about what it would really be like if the world was going to end in three months.” Joey replied.
“Joey, if I died right now, I would be happy knowing that I’d had the best friend I could imagine. “Joey could see Dawson’s corny look in the green glow of the alarm clock.
“Me too.”
