Scenes From a Mall by Alison
"Money. Freedom. My own apartment. Money. Freedom. My own apartment." Pacey
repeated over and over to himself the reason why he was degrading himself
by taking a job at the mall as the Easter Bunny. As much as he loved kids,
they did get rather annoying. Most of them were either crying or upset
that they were being forced to get dressed up for a picture with a bunny.
Plus, most of them thought it was the same premise as Santa Claus, they sit
on your lap and you bring them whatever they ask for. Just as Pacey was
about to go crazy, he noticed a teenage girl with her back to him, waiting
patiently in line. In her arms was a child of about a year. He immediatly
recognized her. Joey. The woman of his dreams. They both liked each
other, but had never admitted it enough to actually do anything about it.
As her turn got closer and closer Pacey got more and more nervous, for once
thrilled that she couldn't see him through his costume. Finally, Joey was
next. She sat Alex on Pacey's lap and the woman behind the camera took the
picture. Joey picked Alex up and started to turn. Pacey signaled to the
woman to take Alex from her mumbling something about another picture. Just
as Joey was about to protest she fell into someone's lap. She was sitting
on the easter bunnies lap. Pacey removed the head of his costume and
kissed her. She was surprised, but found herself kissing him back. They
eventually pulled apart embarassed. They stared at the 20 kids who had
just had their hearts broken that the easter bunny wasn't real and 20
parents who were disgusted at the teenagers display of affection, not to
mention the disallusioning of their children's beliefs.
"So Joey, do you still believe?"
Joey looked him up and down, from the furry white costume, to the rabbit's
feet, to his beautiful eyes. She laughed and said, "Of course I believe
Pacey." and she kissed him again. She got up off his lap and took his
hand...er, foot. Pacey mentioned something about taking a break to the
photographer and said he would be back in about 15 minutes. Pacey changed
out of his bunny suit and he and Joey walked around the mall talking.
They
ended up at the food court. "So Pacey, you hungry for a carrot?" she asked
him with a smile.
"If I didn't love you so much I might take offense to
that remark" he said to her. She was caught offgaurd. Pacey had just
casually said he loved her.
Instead of freaking about it, she swallowed her
fear and said, "And if I didn't love you so much, I wouldn't offend you."
At that moment, the world seemed right. Pacey took Joey into his arms and
kissed her. She wrapped her arms tightly around him as he did to her. They
were finally happy. They no longer worried about their families or their
sad adolescent lives. The world had meaning. They walked back to the small
area where Pacey worked. He put his suit back on and gave her one last kiss
before putting the head on. Joey picked up Alex and walked away smiling.
She was in love, and she didn't care who knew it.
