*Purely speculative and hypothetical suggestion on my part.

Who is Austin (Duh-Boy) Reed?

He's the guy who caused Roman Brady to get his first "Ohmigod-my-daughter's-in-love-with-a-punk"-induced white hairs. Carrie started dating him back when he was a boxer and Daddy didn't approve. When Carrie's face got splashed with acid intended for Austin at the Titan "Face of the Nineties" Benefit (she was their spokesmodel), Daddy forbid her to see him again or he would arrest Austin and lock him up. Carrie, scarred and subdued, obeyed. She turned to Lucas for comfort and he encouraged her to get plastic surgery to fix the scars. Austin, contrite and guilt-ridden, promised to quit boxing and take a desk job if he could date Carrie again. Roman acquiesced, and Carrie and Austin got back together.

Exit Patrick Muldoon, enter Austin Peck.

Austin, now "Duh-Boy" (Austin Peck's Austin) became the target of Sami and Lucas' manipulations, and the rest, as they say, is Days history.

What is Duh-Boy's main conflict?

Duh-Boy, feeling unappreciated and such, had started boxing again, displaying flagrant disregard for Carrie's feelings about that. After all, she asked him for his opinion before she took the PR job at Salem University Hospital, but he hasn't seen fit to tell her the truth about his new hobby. He is at odds with his half-brother, Lucas, because of the whole Sami/Will episode, and Lucas' drinking is exacerbating the situation. Austin still has paternal feelings for Will, and is reluctant to surrender his fatherly privileges. To top it all off, Carrie is withdrawing from him mentally, physically and emotionally as she becomes less and less enchanted with him and more and more drawn to Mike Horton.
What would I do with Duh-Boy if I were a DOOL writer?

  • Make him fall in love with Nicole Walker. That would stick in Eric's craw like a piece of raunchy taffy. Have Nicole and Austin have a hot, heavy secretive affair which even Sami won't find out about until Nicole gets pregnant. Carrie and Eric will both feel betrayed, and Eric would finally have a serious storyline.
  • Let Austin pursue the boxing career, and have him take a blow too many to the head. Roman Brady warned Austin that he can't have his little pumpkin if he boxes, and this could create some serious conflict, considering Roman and Billie are having some interesting developments. Hmmm. . . Carrie's husband against Daddy, who's having sex with her sister-in-law. I like it!
  • Make him a serious anti-Mike Horton character. Mike doesn't have enough enemies. The Hortons and the Reeds could reengage in their family feud, with Lucas caught between the two.

What is Duh-Boy's take on the Mike and Carrie situation?

He doesn't like the fact that Carrie's spending time with Mike, and if anything ever does happen and Duh-Boy finds out about it, Mike should be ready to go a few rounds with his rival. Duh-Boy looks upon Carrie as his property and there's no telling what could happen if he found out about Mike and Carrie's feelings for each other, or any of the intimate moments they have shared. He might blow a gasket and go after the both of them!

My opinion of the character of Austin Reed.

The problem with the character of Austin Reed, as I see it, is the bad selection of a model to play a man who was supposed to be sensitive and sweet. Had Patrick Muldoon stayed in the role, I would have much more sympathy for Austin's plight as a husband slowly losing his wife because of his own foibles. Austin Peck brings a certain humor to the role of Austin, making him the butt of unintended jokes and his time in the character has morphed it, much as Stephanie Cameron's tenure as Jennifer Rose Horton shifted the personality of the character for the worse, not to mention the numerous Jack Devereauxs that have come and gone. If Days of Our Lives manages to woo Patrick Muldoon back to the character, I would be more sympathetic to him. As it is, Austin Peck is himself to blame for making Austin Reed into the Pillsbury "Duh-Boy".
