Finally A Doctor

***SPECIAL THANKS goes to Vicki for helping me with everything she has done! Thanks Vicki, you're the best!***

"Dr. Michaela Quinn...... I am so proud of you." Dr. Josef Quinn said as he hugged his youngest daughter who
had just graduated from Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania . "You finally fullfilled your dreams and now
you are a doctor."

"Oh Father, it is a dream come true for me. Now that I am a doctor we can work side by side like we have
been planning." Michaela said as she hugged her proud Father.

"Oh that reminds me! Here.......I got this for you." Dr. Josef said as he reached into his long coat pocket.

"Oh Father! It is beautiful! My very own doctor sign!"

"Dr. Michaela Quinn M.D." said her father in a serious but happy voice.

"Now when we get home you hang your sign up with mine, now that we are partners I think you should have a
sign too".

"Oh thank you! I will make sure to hang it up as soon as we get home!"

"Oh I'm so proud of you! Now...... let's go celebrate".

After eating supper at Michaela's favorite restaurant the Quinn family retired back to the Quinn residence and
enjoyed a time of Dr. Josef reading a book by the fire place.

After he finished reading to the family Dr. Josef told everyone good night and went upstairs to bed.

“Today has been one busy day, but I enjoyed every minute of it.” Michaela said to her Mother as she sat down
in the chair her Father was just sitting in.

“Yes it has been a very busy day. So, I’m going to go on upstairs and join your father. Good night Michaela.”
Elizabeth said.

“Mother?”

“Yes Michaela.”

“How do you feel about me finally being a doctor? Father has told me that he is very proud of me, but you
haven’t said anything.”

“Michaela, I think you know how I feel. I think a woman’s job is in the home, not being a doctor. If you really
want to know how I feel, I think you made a mistake becoming a doctor. If you wanted to find a job instead of
getting married and raising children, you should have tried to do something other than a doctor. There aren’t too
many people who will be willing to go see a woman doctor. You will have a hard time in the career you have
chosen.”

“Mother, I have patients come to see me now. They accept me. Father accepts me being a doctor....now why
can’t you !?!?”

“If your father wasn’t a doctor you wouldn’t have any patients. Most of his patients have been coming to see
him for years now. People are used to having male doctors and no one is going to change to having a female
doctor. In this world people don’t accept female doctors.”

“Well, maybe I belong in another world.”

“Michaela........"

“Good night Mother.” Michaela said as she stood up and went running up the stairs upset.

When Michaela got to her room, she sat down on her bed to think about everything that had happened today.

She turned her head and saw her diploma hanging on the wall.....for she was finally a doctor, but why did she
feel so depressed?

“I wish Mother could understand the way I feel. I have dreamed of nothing but being a doctor, and now that I
am one, she is making me feel depressed. Well, I’m not going to let her ruin my and my Father’s excitement!
Tomorrow is a brand new day, and I will be by my father’s side in his clinic.”

With those thoughts in mind, Michaela went to sleep with a smile on her face. For she was finally a doctor!

The next morning Michaela woke up by the sun shining through the curtains and landing on her face. She
jumped up out of bed and got dressed in her best dress and went running downstairs to find her father reading
the paper at his desk.

“Dr. Michaela Quinn M.D. reporting to work!”

“Well, welcome Dr. Quinn, my name is Dr. Josef Quinn, you can just call me Dr. Quinn. Let me show you
around the office. This right here is my partners desk....our partners desk. And over here is the waiting area,
and in here is our examining area.”

“Well, everything appears to be the way I pictured it.” Michaela said as she smiled at her father.

“Oh Michaela, it is so good to have you here. This will be such an experience working together.”

“Dr. Quinn. Mr. Bell is here for his 8 o’clock appointment” interrupted the receptionist.

“And that is Martha. She is our receptionist.”

“Hello it’s nice to have met you.” Said Martha.

“Pleasure is all mine.” Replied Michaela.

“Mr. Bell. Dr. Quinn is ready to see you know.”

Through out the months Michaela helped her Father with his patients. If they were very busy Michaela would
take a look at the patient before her Father came in, so she can tell him what she found out by examining the
patient, to try and save some time, and to give Michaela someone to look over her shoulder to make sure her
diagnosis was correct.

But as the months went on Michaela’s mother grew more and more tired and aggravated about Michaela and
her father talking about medicine and their patients all the time. And then one day Elizabeth was waiting on
Michaela one morning at the bottom of the stairs. Mrs. Quinn had had enough and she was ready to put an end
to it.

When Michaela came downstairs her and her mother had a long talk that ended up with Michaela running up
stairs crying. Mrs. Quinn could just not understand that Michaela wanted to be a doctor more than wanting to
find a husband and getting married, and having children. Michaela wanted to do what SHE wanted to do not
what her mother wanted her to do. Time after time Michaela and her mother would have these talks, and after
time Michaela got tired of it. It got to the point where she didn’t want to live with her parents any more. She
loved her Dad very much and she loved her mom, but it was getting too stressful for her to keep on living there.
So, one day Michaela decided to try and find a doctor's position somewhere else.

Michaela found many ads wanting doctors, but they all turned her down cause she was a female. Then when she
was about to give up, she saw one more ad....for the Colorado Springs area. She applied for the position and in
less than a week she got a reply back, asking her to take the position. Michaela was so excited, but at the same
time she was so upset. For she was fixing to leave her parents, her sisters, her home. But she would soon be
accepted as a doctor, or so she thought.

Michaela answered the telegram saying that she will arrive in C.S. in a couple weeks. When she got home from
sending the telegram, she went to see her father, who was sitting at his desk looking very sad. “Father.....”

“I know Michaela. You took the position. I am happy for you. You have the opportunity to go out and build
your own practice. I am so proud of you. I am also sad that you will be moving so far away, but if it’s what you
want, and if you’re happy, then I’m happy.” Dr. Josef said as he smiled at his daughter as he wiped a tear
away.

“Oh Father....thank you so much....for everything. You have taught me so much. You have taught me more than
books can ever teach.” Then Michaela started crying and then she hugged her father.

“What can I do to help you move? I will take some time off from work to help you move, if that is ok with you.”

“Oh....well really there isn’t too much. All I am going to bring are my clothes and different things I may need. I
will try to get some every day stuff once I get to town. I appreciate you willing to help!”

“You are my daughter of course I will be willing to help. Promise me you will telegraph as soon as you get to
town.”

“I promise. Thank you Father......for everything.” Michaela said as she hugged her Father, then went upstairs to
finish packing.

Two nights later the whole Quinn family had a going away dinner for Michaela. Everyone told Michaela that
they would miss her, but only Dr. Josef said that he was proud of Michaela and that he is sure that she will
make a fine doctor.

Elizabeth was really quiet at dinner, she would answer someone's question, but she would not volunteer any
conversation. Michaela had noticed her Mother's behavior, but she wasn't going to let that ruin her excitement.

The next morning Michaela woke up to realize that today was the day she was leaving home to fulfill her
dreams.....being a doctor.

"Good morning Dr. Quinn" Dr. Josef greeted his daughter.

"Good morning Father." Michaela said as she sat down at the table across from her Father.

"Well...today is the day! Aren't you excited?"

"Oh yes, I'm quite excited, but....."Michaela stopped.

"But what Mike?"

"I'm happy, but I feel like I'm leaving part of my life behind me. Who knows when I will see you again."
Michaela said as she started crying.

"Oh Michaela." Dr. Josef said as he stood up and went walking to the other side of the table to his daughter.

"I'm come visit you as soon as you get settled in. I also told you that I would help you move if you wanted me
to."

"I should have taken you up on that offer. I'm so nervous about going to a different place and being around
people I don't know......yet."

"Michaela, if you want me to, I will go with you to Colorado Springs."

"Oh Father, it will mean so much if you will go with me."

"Then it's settled, WE are going to Colorado Springs!"

At that time Elizabeth came walking into the room.

"You are going with her?"

"Just to help her find a place to stay and get settled it. Do you have any objections?" Dr. Josef asked in a
serious tone of voice.

"What about your patients?" "I will have Dr. Bell take my place. I haven't taken any time off from work lately,
and Dr. Bell said that whenever I need time off to just let him know and he'll be happy to cover for me. Besides,
it's not often that our youngest daughter moves away from home. Would you like to join us? I'm sure it'll be
quite an experience traveling that far away."

"That's alright, I'll stay here where I am needed, with the rest of my family." Then Elizabeth walked out the
room.

"I didn't believe she would come with us." Dr. Josef said as he stood up to go sit back down to finish eating.

After Michaela and her Father finished eating breakfast, Dr. Josef went to go see Dr. Bell. Dr. Bell agreed to
take care of the clinic until Dr. Josef returned.

"Once Dr. Josef arrived home, he went upstairs to start packing for his long trip with his daughter.

Around 2 o'clock that afternoon Michaela and her father were packed and were ready to go. Michaela's sister
Rebecca went to the train station to tell Michaela bye. None of Michaela's other sisters came to tell her buy, but
Michaela wasn't going to let that stop her excitement. She knew that people weren't going to approve the carrier
she had chosen, but she wasn't going to pick the carrier other people wanted her to pick. She wanted to be the
doctor she had thought and dreamt about being.

On the train Michaela and her father talked a lot. Dr. Josef told Michaela that there will be people who is not
going to like having a female doctor. By now Michaela was use to that. Her family was a very good example.

Then finally the two Quinn doctors arrived in Colorado Springs.

When Michaela and her father stepped off off the stage coach they tried to find a place for Michaela to stay.

They found a perfect house right at the edge of town. It was a two story house, with plenty of room for
Michaela's clinic downstairs, including recovering rooms, and rooms for patients that she may want to spend the
night. And upstairs was enough room for Michaela's living conditions.

Dr. Josef was kind enough to buy the house for Michaela, he also bought her a horse, some chickens, and
some supplies for inside the house, which included food from the General Store. While at the General Store the
Quinn doctors ordered a sign for outside of the building to let people know there is a new doctor in town.
