Chapter 6 - The Shocking News

Jesse is in the bride's room with Marlena, John, and Maddie. Marlena bends over to talk to Maddie. "Okay Maddie. I want to take one last look to make sure you are all ready. Turn around sweetie. Alrighty everything seems in order. Here is your basket. Now as you're walking down the isle I want you to drop the rose petals. Okay?" "Like Dis?" Maddie drops a hand full of petals on the floor. "Yes sweetheart. Exactly like that. Help me pick these petals up." "Ok grandma." Marlena lets out a slight chuckle. "That's my girl. Jesse are you almost ready." "Ready or not here I come." Jesse walks out from behind the screen in a cream-colored full-length gown. "You look beautiful." "Thanks Marlena." "Mommy look like a princess!" John speaks up. "Are we ready?" "I think so." Maddie takes Marlena's hand.

There's a knock at the door. "Come in." A deliveryman walks in. "I have an envelope for a Ms. Hayes." "That's me." The man hands her the envelope and sticks out a clipboard. "Please sign here." Jesse looks at the envelope and notices that there is no return address on it. "Do you know who this is from?" "Sorry mam I don't." John tips the man. "I wonder what this could be? Should I open it now? It's marked urgent maybe I should open it now." Jesse opens the envelope there are some papers inside. She pulls the papers out and starts to read them. She starts shaking and tears are flowing from her eyes. "This can't be." "What is it Jesse?" "It's my adoption papers. It says that my mother is Samantha Evans. I can't believe this is happening. I have to get out of here." Jesse runs out of the bride's room.

Eric is standing at the altar wondering why the wedding hasn't started yet. He looks to the back of the church and he sees Jesse running for the door. Before she leaves she looks inside the church to look at Eric for one last time before he finds out the truth. Their eyes meet. He can see the tears in her eyes, but he has no idea why they are there. Jesse disappears out the door. Eric runs to the back of the church to try and catch her. Just as he gets to the door John and Marlena come from the bride's room. "Mom what happened back there?" "Jesse got an envelope sent by special delivery." "So what was in it?" "Her adoption records. Honey, the records say that Samantha Evans is her mother." "They're fake! I know who it was. It was Sami. She never liked Jesse. She just did this to break up our wedding because she thinks Jesse ruined her wedding. I have to find Jesse!" "Eric give her some time." "No mom I have to find her now."

Jesse runs all the way back to the DiMera mansion. She walks in the door and she runs into Kristen. "What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be getting married?" "Shut up Kristen or I'll rip that mole off your face with my bare hands." Jesse runs up the stairs to her room. She falls on to the bed and sobs. Eric finally catches up to her. He knocks on the door. "Jesse let me in." "No Eric. I don't want to see you now." "Jesse please we have to talk about this." "There's nothing to talk about. Those papers say everything." "I think those papers are fake." Jesse opens the door. "Who would do such a thing?" "My sister." "Eric even if she did send them there has to be some truth in them. She has to know that we would check out the information on them." "That's exactly what we are going to do." "What?" "Why don't we go out to Colorado?" "What good will that do?" "We can check out if it was Sami who did this and we could go to the adoption agency to find out if this is true."

Jesse and Eric change their clothes. They are talking in the living room when Jesse takes her engagement ring off and hands it to Eric. "Here I want you to take this." "NO! I want you to keep it on your finger until we know the truth." John, Roman, and Marlena enter the living room. "Can we come in?" "Sure, we are going to go to Colorado to find out if those papers are real." "You can use my plane. I'll go make the arrangements and you can leave in a couple of hours." "Thanks John." "Eric would you mind helping me to my room." "No Dad."

There's a moment of silence. Jesse turns away from Marlena and begins to speak. "So do you think those papers are real?" Marlena comes closer to Jesse. "Honestly I don't' know." Jesse turns towards Marlena. "The two of you were twins. I mean you were close weren't you?" "Yes at one time Sami and I were very close but there was a time when we weren't. I do think that it is possible that you are my niece." Jesse tries to look at Marlena but she can't. "Marlena, if I were you I wouldn't even be able to look at me." "Why is that?" "I'm a reminder of a very painful time in your life. I mean your own sister takes over your life and she locked you up in a sanitarium. She had you scheduled for shock therapy." Marlena grabs Jesse and tries to make her understand. "Sam had a terrible drug and alcohol problem but she got the help she needed. Before she died I forgave her for everything she did." "What about my father? Did you see who my father was?" "Yes, Don Craig is listed as your father." Jesse pulls away from Marlena. "Don Craig your first husband. How can you even look at me?" Marlena grabs Jesse and sits her down on the sofa. "It's easy if you are my niece then you're a part of my sister. Therefore you are a part of me and I care about you. From the very first day I saw you I felt a connection to you. I can't explain it. It's just there." Jesse smiles. "You know Martha always said that I reminded her of Sam. Now we know why." "Eric still thinks that these papers are fake." "Whether they're fake or not when the two of you come back it will all be resolved. Either way you will still be a member of this family." "Marlena would you take care of Maddie while I am gone?" "You know I will." "Thanks!" Jesse hugs Marlena. "I'm going to go up and pack a few things."
