Siddhartha Gautama 563-483 B.C.

Born to a noble Hindu family, Siddhartha was a virtual prisoner until he was 29. He set out to seek Enlightenment (Wisdom). The term Buddha means Englightened One. Siddhartha tried several ways to reach the enlightened state--religious debates, starvation and meditation-- among others. Finally he reached enlightenment and declared that the following as the Four Noble Truths:

  1.  Everything in life is suffering and sorrowful.

  2.  The cause of all suffering is people's selfish desire for teh temporary pleasures of this world.

  3.  The way to end all suffering is to end all desires

  4.  The way to overcome such desires and attain enlightenment is to follow the Eightfold Path, which is called the Middle Way between desires and self-denial.

Tha^`y Abhinyana Words' :

"The more you desire, the more you suffer."

"Is not this Planet Earth like a tiny boat, adrift on the open sea of Space? Are we not all refugees? Where are we going?"

"Life is like a river
straight, it seldom flows, but
twists, and turns, and winds about,
as on and on it goes."

"There are many ways to be rich, and many ways to be poornoot just in terms of money."

"When Zen is Zen it's not Zen."

"Life in this world is what we make of it, it has no meaning other than what we give it."

"Love doesn't choose, but embraces all equally, impartially. It has no subject, and no object, no centre, and no circumference."

"Life is fragile, and trembles in the balance, like a dewdrop on a lotus-leaf."

"Do good, not for what you might get as a result, but because you have the opportunity and capacity, and because you love life."

In the dark there is some light,
In the blind, there is some sight."

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." By Jesus

The concept of reincarnation should have a transforming effect on those who seriously consider it. It should bring about an opening of the mind, a deeper understanding of what it means to be human.

By this concept, nationalistic pride and racism are seen to have no basis because, if it is true that we have lived many times before this present life, it is probable that we have been members of various races and nations. There is therefore no reason to egoistically consider superior the race or nation that we now ‘belong’ to, as we did not choose to be born where we were born, and neither are we going to stay here forever, but will pass onto something else. Our race is the human race, and we should learn to feel good about being human because, as yet, we know very little about this.

Have you noticed how anticipation of something
nice is often more pleasant than the thing
when we get it—that, in fact, getting it
is sometimes a bit of a let-down?
This is why getting something nice
when it is not expected is so much nicer
than when it is.
It is also one of the reasons why desire causes suffering.

“The hardest part about gaining any new idea is sweeping out the false idea occupying that niche.
As long as that niche is occupied, evidence and proof and logical demonstration get nowhere.
But once the niche is emptied of the wrong
idea that has been filling it --- once you can honestly say, 'I don't know,'  --- then it becomes possible to get at the truth.”

-- Robert A. Heinlein --

“In the early stages, we move like cattle, in herds; later, we congregate in religions, movements, and societies; later, we advance in groups which grow ever smaller; finally, we advance alone.”
(Christmas Humphries).
